Falkirk v Utd - Saturday 11th Feb (3pm)

Big game on Saturday.

A chance to really put some distance between us and Falkirk.Alternatively it's a chance for them to really start breathing down our neck.We must be at our best (which we rarely are on plastic unfortunately).

Edjenguele is definitely suspended for this one annoyingly. So who would you play as his replacement?I think (though it's not ideal) i would just stick Dillon in there for 1 match.Time for us to try and build on Saturday's clean sheet and try and get really miserly at the back again.

....................Bell...................
VDS...Durnan...Dillon..Dixon
............Toshney..Flood......
....Spittall..Andreu..Murray
...............Mikkelsen..........

Subs - Zwick,Fraser,Nicholls,Donaldson,
            VDV,Robson,Telfer

Re: Falkirk v Utd - Saturday 11th Feb (3pm)

Fraser for Spittal please Tek.
I see where you're coming from but I would sooner go attacking than defending, need to boss the game and defend in their half.
I'm very happy with Dillon but at the risk of being shot to pieces I would be fine with Donaldson too.

Re: Falkirk v Utd - Saturday 11th Feb (3pm)

Toshney for Dillon in that line up for me, and Fraser in for Toshney in midfield.

Dislike going to this Grangemouth ground, a soulless remote structure lacking in excitement or emotion. Falkirk folk generally are a dour lot who seem to be permanently aggrieved.

And a plastic pitch: you should be allowed in paying plastic coins.

Can anyone remember the last time Toshney played in central defence for us & how did he get on?

Re: Falkirk v Utd - Saturday 11th Feb (3pm)

Not a chance in hell Fraser will be dropped

If Willo comes straight back in Ray will need to either move Toshney to CH or drop someone else and Murray might be the unlucky one if Ray wants to play it tight.

Personally I'd go to win this and willo in for Edge and Toshney at CH.

Re: Falkirk v Utd - Saturday 11th Feb (3pm)

Don't we make too much of plastic being bad for you?
I'd rather every club played on good turf but this preconception that artificial is catastrophic to those prone to/coming back from injury is overblown I think.

It may be it may not be.

I suppose its upto the manager and player how they see it.

Re: Falkirk v Utd - Saturday 11th Feb (3pm)

Would have Toshney at Centre Back and Fraser in the middle. That's his best position, having him out wide is pointless.

Re: Falkirk v Utd - Saturday 11th Feb (3pm)

In saying that I maybe should have added, yeah, it can CAUSE injuries but you can't stop eleven boys going on the park on account of that.
Like Dixon got hurt at Palmerston but Ray's not going to leave him out cos he got injured on plastic the last time.

Re: Falkirk v Utd - Saturday 11th Feb (3pm)

Toshney's done well in midfield ....if he is staying in the team i'd keep him there. He's an unknown quantity at Centre Half.

Fraser is better in the middle....but isn't the goal threat Tony is.

Murray to supply pace on the left.

Spittal to shore things up on the right.(as Pat pointed out we don't lose as many goals when he plays..he helps protect VDS inparticular).

Re: Falkirk v Utd - Saturday 11th Feb (3pm)

Dillon in for Edge is the only change I'd make. Harsh on Willo maybe, but Fraser beside Toshney gives more creativity deeper and an added attacking option.  Toshney doesn't deserve left out from there either.

We must win this game for so many reasons.

From recollection, Falkirk right winger, the boy hippo is rapid. He tore robson a new hole last time through there and created their second goal with robson ball watching. He came on as sub at tannadice and had a positive impact again. Falkirks only one of the day I thought as Houston had came for the 0-0.
Murray looked good 2nd half when he moved to the left but is he ready for a challenge that will rely on him fulfilling more defensive duties?
I would maybe put spittal in front of Dixon for the reasons you stated and have either Murray or probably fraser on the right

Hippolyte played wide left and put both crosses in from that side after Toshney went off injured and Dillon came on. VDS played ch that night.

Too much commotion

Had to count there in case you were going for ten players rather than include Donaldson.....lose less goals with him in stand than playing anyway

Just re-watched the highlights there, first 2 goals came from the right, second goal was the one I was thinking of where edge cleared poorly but robson was ball watching, hippolyte was in the middle for that goal trying to claim it but it was an og.
You're right though, hippolyte played on the left and whipped in the third cross from the left.
Whatever wing he is on, I'd have spittal sitting in front of the fullback providing cover.

Re: Falkirk v Utd - Saturday 11th Feb (3pm)

We should be going there to win, nothing else we should be going there making sure there worrying aboot us. Our strongest 11 is better than their Strongest 11, therefore Spittal should Not start. Also we don't need Willo and Toshney in midfield 2 players who win it back yes but also 2 that Always give the baw away. Willo to do the dogging aboot and let Fraser run the game as he did second half against Raith. Toshney to CH , agree he's unknown in that position but given Coll and Dillon are oor only other options he can't be worse.

Bell
Vds Toshney Durnan Dixon
Flood Fraser
Nicholls Andreu Murray
Mikkelssen

Re: Falkirk v Utd - Saturday 11th Feb (3pm)

BigAndtFTD, I doubt Falkirk are putting a team out worrying too much about us, they've already beaten us this season, and have a very good record against teams with the bigger reputation over the past few years.

And the goals we lost last meeting at their bit were all (three) from crosses which probably should have been prevented, and then which weren't well defended by the central pair, nether of whom are going to be in the centre on Saturday. In fact, probably our back four will be completely different, in terms of position for two, and personnel for two.

Houstie normally has his teams go for it in the last 10 minutes if tight, but lately he's been using wide players more, so we can't allow our full backs to get isolated.

At the same time, in the 3-1 defeat, we lost three players to injury, and when Charlie Telfer was crocked with around 25 minutes to go, we had no subs left: Falkirk took advantage of this with our defence exposed (brought on an extra winger) and grabbed with win with two goals in the last few minutes.

Re: Falkirk v Utd - Saturday 11th Feb (3pm)

Whilst I agree with what your saying Pat , I just think and would like to see United go there and really grab the game early doors make Falkirk and Houstie think 'o'f**k. Dickers was very good against Raith so you've to fancy his confidence is up therefore should be able to deal with whoever is on his side. Fraser and Flood in the middle controlling the tempo, I'm an optimist I know. Opinions after all.

Re: Falkirk v Utd - Saturday 11th Feb (3pm)

Andy, I'm an optimist too, but living near Grangemouth, it's all too much for me if Falkirk beat us. And if we win, they'll criticise the size of our support, which is a constant fixation of Falkirk fans.

I hope we dominate them from the outset too.

What's their away support like? Surprised to read they'd give you a hard time about the size of oor support bud. Clutching at straws there I think.

Last time we were unlucky and ravaged with injuries during the game. Hoping we carry better luck. Houston will think he ken's how to counter Dickers and big Tam (Daly like)Mikkelson but that's no easy if it's happening & on form.

I'll go for 1-2 United.

Re: Falkirk v Utd - Saturday 11th Feb (3pm)

In the grand scheme of things each succeeding league game is taking on more importance than the previous one. Like Raith last week was vital cos if we'd screwed up it could have been Arabgeddon. Now Falkirk on Saturday has heaps of importance cos will it be a 1st half or a 2nd half performance (from the Raith game) against a side who are chasing us & beat us there last time. So a lot of fans who were saying the Raith game was the most important of the season so far will now be saying the same thing about the Falkirk game. If it's like this til the end of the season I'm going to combust. Thankful there's a league break next week but why oh why do we keep getting away ties in cup competitions?
