Every man and his dog knows what is required right now at a minimum, yet we are sailing rudderesly into the unknown snapping up a Danish striker that is way off the pace. Piss poor offers made for the lad from Crusaders and the promise of an "exciting" player arriving (days ago) makes us look amaturish to say the least. Coupled with Mckinnon stating that he would be happy with the squad if no one can be brought in and that we have now taken a college graduate in from the USA when there are /or were players in our own division that would have improved us, this really is a new low for me. Instead of paying Southern money for (god knows what), we should have employed a Director of Football . Someone that actually knows the game inside out (perhaps an ex manager)? But someone that can properly spend time with McKinnon and scout players properly(not just by videos). This lack of proper balanced recruitment has been part of the root cause of why we are where we are.
I mean, we have a first team with no wingers and two (was one until Phil joined) strikers and thats it. Yet we have overloaded in the no 10 position. It's just not good enough for a club of our size.

Interesting to see in that list that septic are the only Scottish (semi Scottish) club to pay a transfer fee so far in the window. It looks like ST is almost unique in offering transfer fees in the current window.

It doesn't even have to be a Director of Football on £60-70K a year. Just paying someone £30-£40K plus expenses to do some fucking scouting would be money well spent IMHO.
Ray said this is a crap time to try and get players and yet Hibs signed Humphries, QOTS signed Thomas on loan from Motherwell, Falkirk signed ex-Zombie Fraser Aird and Ross County just signed O'Brien in this window. All wingers.
Tbh, it just looks like we are crap at signing players.

My fellow Arabs and I discussed this at length on Saturday. We were of the collective opinion that we should never look to spend another penny on transfer fees and that all recruitment should be: grow your own; or have good contacts re loans and frees. When we counted, we came up with an entire team of players that had played at the highest level and/or International futba in the last 2 years. And I know that does not fit the narrative of some, but our problems are all down to recruitment as TMR says in the OP - Board recruitment re Managers; and their recruitment of players. I am not slagging off or questioning the current Manager, as he needs time - and backing!

Agree 1000%, who was the last pre contract player we signed? Levein and Houston were brillant at that. I hate when we pay fees for players, there is always players out there who are available for free or loans who are equally good

We came up with the following who have played for the 1st team:
Kawashima
Demel
Taggart
Kuhl
Pongolle
McKay
Anier
Risky
Muirhead
Sneijder
Bodul
Gunning
Donaldson
McGowan
Ofere
Murray
Toshney
JJ and
Szromnik.
Quite horrific, I'm sure you will all agree, as it's almost 2 teams and corroborating the OP

TMR, I'd like to know where this term "exciting player/signing" came from. Anybody?

Its this, but also the boards lack of football governance that is an ongoing problem. They are either allowing the manager to spunk money on YouTube signings like with Jackie or, with Ray it appears they are just putting barriers up. From one extreme to another. There needs to be some middle ground and for me, Ray needs someone to help liase between him and the board, whilst doing some scouting.

I'm sure Ray was quoted as saying this. It was doing the rounds for the past 10 days or so on Mad /social media i'm sure. I really hate when these things are leaked out as they almost never amount to anything.

That is truly frightening. It's not htat we don't sign players, it's just that there seems no measured judgement.
Falkirk over the years imo have brought good players in and have reared their own.
Alex Smith at the helm (I think), and that's the model for going forward. Someone with that knowledge of the game.

The phrase came out around the time we were looking for half season ticket sales, if you are cynical. Which I am. Maybe Raymond was misled, who knows?

And yet Thompson still gets very little flak for the self inflicted self harming done to our club
