Billy Mackenzie/ The Associates

20 years yesterday since Billy's death. One of the best musicians to ever come out of Dundee and miles ahead of his time with style etc.

Bit of random fact, he used to stay with his folks in Auchterhouse ( where i grew up) and I remember seeing him walking his dogs every day past our house every morning.

It was in Auchterhouse that Billy died.  His dad Jim,  a lifelong friend of mine, found his body in the shed, IIRC. Jim later burned the shed to the ground.

The Mackenzies were a very unfortunate family. Mum died of cancer, then came Billy's tragic passing, followed by Jimmy (in London, I think) Next was John who died in a fire at his home.  Finally Elizabeth fell to her death from her flat window. I had lost touch with their dad so not sure how he passed away. I have a suspicion it may have been cancer.  RIP, all......  They are survived by sister Helen and brother Alex.

True story about Billy:  he came home from London and had occasion to see the manager of a bank in Albert Street.  The manager greeted him, saying "I'll be with you in a minute, just take a chair."   "Thank you" said the bold Billy, and wheeched a chair down the street and into his dad's second-hand shop! Cannae mind the outcome of that, but remember we laughed for weeks after......

Yeah thats right Leedsy. Auchterhouse is where I grew up. Even though I was very young, i remember a man walking his dogs along the farm road and past our house every morning. It wasn't till years later my mum told me it was Billy.

Thats a belter of a story about Billy stealing a chair

Heres a wee story in the tele incase you missed it- https://www.eveningtelegraph.co.uk/fp/always-knew-special-billy-mackenzie-remembered-20-years-since-death/
