Re: On This Day

Think this game was the 1st time I remember singing "Love is in the air"  and also had my 1st few Killie Pies.

Re: On This Day

I guess an Olofsson turning up now would go down well. He just kinda came out of nowhere didn't he. I remember him & Robbie Winters switching all over Ibrox.

I am pretty certain that was indeed the day 'Love Is In The Air' was born Mr Phobia.

It was also the first time i remember seeing wee Erik come up to our away support before and after games fists pumping and roaring in celebration (or to gee us up).

If so the birth was a noisy one. Ended up sat with the boys from the Smugglers who seemed to have brought it with them and we sang it non stop.

6 killie pies I had that day.

Re: On This Day

I was at this game.  For years after this I was convinced "love is in the air" was an Olofsson song.  I actually thought the words were...

"Love is in the air, Olofsson Olofsson Love is in the air..."  Didnt figure it out until he was off.

We all get new songs wrong bud at times, pished or no RRDH.

Glad you and some other posters on here made that game as it was memorable for mair reasons than I remember but trigered some solid good memories of mine for sure Chainmail!

Naebody on my bus would risk going for a pint telling me it was asking for trouble going into Killie pubs. Ended up 30 mins late getting in as the Killie fans kept buying me pints of Carfraes in the pub I found.

Great memories of that day. Just cannae mind wee Erik dain his 1st crazy charge up tae the support as oor TEK minds. Mibbies I was still in the pub?

Extra Killie Pie intake was influenced by 2 Killie Pie stall tidy burds I think.

Quality mate.  I remember Erik doing that charge but not sure it was the first time cos id get up for 8 to 10 games a year depending on cup runs (usually away games).  Someone on here will know.  That was such a good fking year that though.

Subject of Dykstra, were you at Motherwell away in 94 (cup game), we were giving Dykstra all manor of abuse behind the goal & he was laughing his TITS off.  Had a feeling he'd end up with us at some point after that, was a great sport.

Dont half miss it like.  Even just getting in the car after the game and sticking radio Scotland for the match reports with my old man.  If I ever do come back that would definitely be one of the driving forces like.

37 YEARS AGO! I mind singing 'Walking on the Moon' at that game, but it never really caught on.
Dull weather day and dull match. Good day out, mind you.

Something that sticks in my mind is a big group of Celtic fans appearing at the match, on the east terracing, and them being surrounded by a cordon of police. Not sure if there were stewards at football games then.

Aberdeen were slightly the better team in that first game, which both teams had wanted played at Dens. They got their wish for the replay.

Another thing which annoyed me were the programmes for that match and the replay, the Hampden game had a Rangers player on the cover, the replay was a single A4 photocopied sheet. In these days, as now, the authorities didn't give a fuck for anyone other than the Glasgow twins.

To be fair, I always thought the original 'Love is in the Air' was adapted for big Kjell. Something like 'Olofsson's in the Air'.

At that game I thought it was "Gough is in the air" then when it was sung at the next game I thought it was "Olafs in the air" which made some sense only to listen closer to hear it was plain and simple "love is in the air"

Along the same lines as my thinking.

Re: On This Day

Aye the Gough own goal game is my first memory of that song being sung, cannae mind it being sung at that Rugby Park game.

That Rangers game was also just after Gazza had beat his wife up - "If you cannae beat Ajax, beat your wife".

"Sheryl's black and blue", was booming out the East Stand.

Some celebration after that win. Got home 6 days later.

I've got a 'hospitality' ticket for that game, what a performance. But see when I click on your link Tek, I'm getting yesterday's Ayr game. Unless it's something to do with losing my glasses.

Here's the goals (I hope).

Re: On This Day

Love watching back these games on the Archive. The big difference for between then and now is the commitment to attack. Back then we got the ball forward quickly, we got it out wide often and we got the ball and players into the box - it was exciting to watch and was successful. There's far too much posing backwards and sideways allegedly in the name of progressive football nowadays and despite playing with 7 creatives (2 wing backs and 5 midfielders) the striker hardly gets any service. What makes things even more galling is our willingness to take set plays short which come to nothing instead of maximising the arial advantage of Durnan, Willy & Tosh who between them have scored 6 goals this season. There is lots to be learned from looking at our past. Ray deservedly gets loads of credit for shoring up the defence and for installing a team spirit which makes us hard to beat, he now needs to apply his magic to improving our attacking performance with or without getting new players in.

Bring back the (real) "United Way" not the kiddy-on Martin version
