New thread Gents.
Every week we will relive a World Cup,Euro,Scottish Cup,FA Cup,European Cup Final etc etc from by-gone years. That reminds you of your youth (or more youthful years in some cases) 😉.
Gonna start with the first world Cup I truly immersed myself in heart and soul (and therefore still arguably my favourite as a consequence). My only real memory of Mexico '86 is wee Strachan putting his foot on the advertising board and my Dad celebrating the goal and laughing at (I guess) his 'wee-ness' or cheekiness in celebration.
But Italia'90 was MY tournament.I remember it all implicitly, almost.
This thread is for your memories, anecdotes, pics, tales or songs that remind you of the Summer of 1990 (World Cup related or even otherwise tenuously reminiscent by association).
This man instantly (even as a boy) made me realise this tournament was like no other.
What a colossal talent he was.His rousing vocals seemed to perfectly illustrate the drama of that World Cup to me.
Dramatic, passionate, life affirming, but ultimately heart-wrenching.

This was the first tournament I can really remember, a few things stand out.
1. Scotland being at a major tournament seemed totally normal. I remember the shock at losing to costa rica, cheering with my dad and grandad when stuart mccall scored against sweden, and being gutted when brazil scored their late winner. It's sad to think guys not much younger than me grew up thinking Scotland in a tournament is a fantasy.
2. Maradona was unbelievable, even though he was past his peak and playing in a not great side. His run and pass for Caniggia against Brazil and then his performance against Italy changed the whole tournament.
3. The whole thing was so magical, from the theme tune on BBC, to some of the great players involved, even to the crappy merchandise I got excited about (a red, green and white coca cola mini football and collecting esso coins). Me and my mates played football each night until it was dark or someones dad started yelling at us, pretending we were Scillachi, Klinnsman, Enzo Scifo, Mancini, Thomas Skuravhy etc

Wasn't really a kid, unless you count being in your mid-thirties as that category, but my two recurring memories of that game are:
1. the goal we lost against Costa Rica, just after half time
Roxburgh chose five at the back for the match, which I fumed at as the game kicked off around tea time as I recall: why so defensive against Costa Rica? It turned out they weren't too poor, and were actually the second seeds in our group. After beating us, they only lost by a single goal to Brazil then beat Sweden, to finish second.
2. a happier moment
McLeod went on to help relegate Partick Thistle and became a tory.

Always remember one game where the camera cut to the Italian bench where Lucca Vialli was having a fag

Favourite memory from Italia 90 was watching england lose to Germany aged 16 in my local and the pub owner closing the doors and provided unlimited free vodka for us till the sun came up.

Woulda been sixteen too. The Sweden game and England losing were particular highlights . Add in the genius of Madchester at the time, discovering booze and acid and it was quite the summer.

I was in Bulgaria on holiday and was 11 for the first 10 days of Italia 90. Memories include:
The English folk in the hotel pissing themselves at the Scotland v Costa Rica game then clamping right up when we beat Sweden which was so exciting. I chucked my Scotland away top after the Costa Rica game in disgust.
Watching Cameroon beat Argentina on a black and white tv in our hotel room.
My old boy complaining about how long we had to wait to get a meal in the hotel and getting a bottle of Russian Champagne as recompense (seemingly costs a fortune back here).
The Italians winning their first? game 4-0 with Baggio sensational and thinking every Italian game would be as exciting LOL.
The Germans absolutely wiping the floor with a really good Yugoslavia team and Lothar Matthaus superb.
Yugolslavia beating Spain with Dragan Stjoikovic scoring two amazing goals and generally giving the best individual performance I've ever seen.
Holland's strip which was cool as fuck and I had with me on holiday.
England being utter pish in the group stages but somehow getting to the semi final. All the English were calling for Robson's head after 2 games in our hotel.
A gorgeous blonde Brazilian fan getting filmed greeting when Argentina put them out.
The last time goalies could pick up passbacks.
It had some great games and performances but wasn't as good as USA 94 football-wise. A bit too cynical. But as TEK says it was the first wc I watched all the way through although I did watch lots of Mexico 86 but was only 7 so it wasn't quite the same.

A truly wonderful player.
I remember not long after Ivan Golac took over Utd there was an interview with him in The Scotsman newspaper and he claimed that he tried to make Stoijkovic a Utd player as he was a neighbour of his in Serbia (they both owned nearby farm houses apparently) but alas to no avail, sadly.
Christ what a signing that would have been.

More from the great man
Also seeing all the cool Italian football stadiums and realising that we watched our football in decrepit toilet bowls in Scotland.

Great days, some random thoughts from that time. I'd just turned 17.
Schiallachi & Baggio turning it on
Platt's goal v Belgium
Brave as f*ck Scotland v Sweden
Getting my first driving lesson from my mum the night England beat Cameroon!
My mate shouting "F*ck off Pavarotti, ya fat beardy bastard!" at the tv after Scotland lost to Brazil, then the glass filter falling off the front of the telly!
