Re: Irn bru cup draw

Forgot the Welsh and NI teams joined this round, Crusaders, Linfield, The New Saints and Bala Town.

Would like a wee trip to Wales, both teams about an hour from Chester.

Anyone but Linfield though.

I think this cup is a great opportunity to play fringe players, ideally I'd want these to be young boys rather than the four D's.

Linfield at home, 5000 away fans.

Re: Irn bru cup draw

I want the Mini-Rangers (Linfield) at Tannadice. And I'd want to fucking hammer them and send their bigotted cunty fans back on their ferries fucking miserable.

If we're in this tournament, may as well make it interesting.

Re: Irn bru cup draw

I thought I'd read previously that the NI and Welsh teams would be drawn at home in this round but a quick search just now doesn't show that.

Found an article that says the draw is regionalised from this point on so NI and Welsh teams can't draw each other.

I assume this means Crusaders can't draw Linfield rather than Linfield can't draw Bala.

£4000 in expenses paid to any team that has to travel cross border.

Games are live on Alba, S4C and Premier Sports from this round on but no fee is paid for playing on TV.

Winner of the cup only gets £17k in prize money so it's not exactly lucrative.

Re: Irn bru cup draw

Wouldn't want anything to do with playing 'mini-Rangers' to be honest, and like blackandtangerine, would rather we weren't in the tournament.

Hibs away for me.

Re: Irn bru cup draw

Don't get this "wish we weren't in this tournament" pish.

Are we too good for it?  Beneath us maybe?

We got relegated fairly last year and are situated right where we deserve at the minute and fwiw I'm really enjoying this season and look forward to every game in every competition, and I haven't said that for a few years.

More than a touch of the Old Firm in some of our support.

Re: Irn bru cup draw

I wish we weren't in the tournament and in Europe instead, but we are where we are and should be looking to win the bloody thing.

Andy, we deserve to be in the tournament.

It's the contempt with which Doncaster has treated the lower league clubs which annoys me, introducing two Trojan Horses in the shape of under 20 sides and Welsh and Irish participation.

No consultation with the Scottish sides took place, and I suspect that UEFA haven't noticed yet what the SPFL have introduced here in Scotland, as new cross border competition has to be ratified by them.

The concept will be hailed a success in time, even though it isn't, and two precedents will have been set to argue the case for 'the the OF' moving south but leaving colt sides polluting our league system.

I'm enjoying the league matches, and the cup games, excepting the Challenge Cup.

Thanks Andy. Saved me posting. Doubters get on with it, we're getting a game on international break weekends too which is a benefit for us at the moment while we try to knit this new team together. Frank & William hadn't played for weeks before the Peterhead game but Ray was able to throw them in to a non-league game & it worked. It was also the first time ever United had played Peterhead. Plenty positives, doubters get along to the next round. I'm looking forward to the draw today & the 4th round tie next month.

Pat, that's just not true.

The competition’s new format was devised and approved by the SPFL Board and UEFA following recommendations made by the SPFL Competitions Working Group, which comprises representatives of member clubs across the leagues.

There is a lot to blame the current administrators for but yet again this is another innovative format introduced to increase interest and the fact that we've got three broadcasters showing live games and more showing up at Tannadice than a lot of Premiership teams get on a regular basis shows it's working.

The majority of people in Scotland prefer to talk our game down, be it the split, the group stages pre-league,  penalties after et, cross border cups etc but time and time again these things are a success and the format copied in many larger leagues all over Europe.

As I've said before, if OF Colt teams in the lower leagues are the compromise we need to make for removing the OF from our top league for ever then sign me up, I would love that, with caveats of course but if it worked in the same way it works in major sports  leagues all over the world then I can't see the problem.

Re: Irn bru cup draw

Andy, thanks for that. I'm reporting on the situation as I've been told it by folk at a local club, on which my dad was on the committee, many years ago.

They were put out by the lack of consultation which could have required the club to play a tie an excessive distance away, leaving them short of available players due to work commitments, and out of pocket even given the cash payback. Regarding the SPFL board, there is only one representative covering the lowest two leagues, Ken Ferguson from Brechin City. Maybe he didn't consult or communicate as well as other clubs might have desired.

Not many clubs were enthusiastic about the changes, I recall, with the likes of Raith Rovers being one of the few to proclaim the set up on their website. They, of course, have a representative on the SPFL board. You are correct about UEFA approval, so I apologise there.

I don't think it's a good thing that games are shown live, but it's a personal thing as I believe live football broadcasting has had a lot to do with killing the game off. Nonetheless, the cash that is being paid by these broadcasters appears pitiful in this case.

As far as the the OF colts sides coming into the lower leagues, fans at that level, I reckon, are happy presently to avoid that bile.

Anyway, without naming the club who I still have close contact with at the lower levels, they got humped at the weekend so won't be going to Wales or Ireland anyway!

Bowers, last time we played down there we looked at going to Belfast for the Friday night before then head to Stranraer on the boat for the game but it got changed to Sunday noon which scuppered it.

Cannae get Dundee to Belfast flights anymore anyway so not worth the hassle.

Thinking of going to bohs vs shams game on the friday, overnight bus from dublin to belfast then morning ferry from Belfast to Stranraer. Would be a decent weekend.
