Re: Overrated Utd players

Pat, I have a lot of respect for you and your comments/opinions generally bud. You are always honest and sometimes yer predictions are freakishly spot on.

Just think your posts here are more suited to a future thread that asks, "what legend wasn't perfect and why"? More than putting Super Mo in this box mate.

He was nae Sean Dillion as a player to supporter ambassador but was definitely not a player that should be mentioned within this topic Pat.

Only my opinion though.

But I'm fucking right!😉

Re: Overrated Utd players

Maurice Malpas was an outstanding footballer and very loyal to united.

Having said that, when I was a kid and first started following united, I thought he was good but didn't understand why the media said he was Scotlands best player in Italia 90 or he won the player of the year in 91.

As time went on and I learned more about the game I realised how good he was. 94 cup final he was excellent against McCoist, and then in the 96/97 season he was magnificent in the sweeper role.

After he retired, I spent years and years watching various crap left backs and realised how good he was and wish I'd appreciated him more in my younger years.

It seems really harsh to include him in this thread. I don't think he was gash going forwards, take a look at the 80 yard run to win the free kick in the nou camp which lead to one  of our finest ever victories.

Re: Overrated Utd players

Well said Kiwi.

Can't think of any players who has won player of the year that could be drawn into an overrated discussion.

Same goes for Hamish who won the same award before Mo. Incredibly Sash never never won either the sfwa or spfa awards.

Craig Easton was never fucking rated, let alone overrated, the boy - and his mate Thomo, got terrible stick when they gave everything in a shite team.

Very few players are rated by United fans which means even fewer are overrated...

Trying to think of something constructive to add after moaning for 10 minutes... I didn't ever think Jim McInally was as good as made out, he was a good player but I don't get it when people put him in their greatest ever United XI for example.

Re: Overrated Utd players

Will definitely need not just a tin hat for this one but full body armour.
My over-rated player is of recent times.....
N**** C*****
Check what he's done since departing.
If we got what was reported for him from Celtic then we should be thinking about giving them a 50% refund.
Celebrating a goal before you score it at Ibrox in the Cup maybe the champagne moment of recent years but that's about it I'm afraid.
Having said that in the unlikely event of Brendan Rogers punting him back here on loan I'd be happy for him to be over-rated again

Re: Overrated Utd players

Crikey - this is more controversial than the Labour Party split....
So here's mine. Great to see him on Tuesday and very thankful for his promotion winning header but Brian Welsh....Hall of Fame...he was only slightly better than Coll Donaldson. Equally poor in the air despite being a giant, both of them always get to the ball but seem to have hexagonal foreheads - the ball seems to go anywhere rather than where it needs to go. Donaldson hits the deck more but Welshie was a bit of a bombscare too. There we are...take me apart!!!!

Re: Overrated Utd players

I'll go back to Tek's question again, which asked about players who were favoured by fans or the press and I never got the hype. I've no time for the football press, so have a downer on their opinions.

So the media saying Malpas was our best player at a terrible campaign in Italia 90? Look at Mo's contribution to Costa Rica's goal, and tell me it was 'outstanding'.

I never got the hype, although he did have outstanding matches and periods for us. But I don't think he should have been given the plaudits to the extent he was, and this (mind, for me, and it's only an opinion) is emphasised by the varied comments about him here.

Re: Overrated Utd players

I always thought Flood was overrated in his first three spells with the club. He was like a third wheel, playing alongside other players who clashed with his style and he'd often get in their way.

But it depends om the team he plays in and where he plays (he used to be played out wide in his first spell IIRC). He's a more effective player in the side he currently plays in.

Rankin was overrated last season purely because he put in effort. He was woeful beyond that.

Aidan Connolly was overrated by some.

And perhaps controversially, I thought Jim McIntyre was fucking hopeless. He was just a skittle.

Oh, and one more. Before he made his first team debut, everyone would rave about how Stephen McConalogue was going to be a star and how he'd broken all these scoring records as a kid. He was just a wee fat boy who looked utterly lost.

Re: Overrated Utd players

Brian Welsh in his heyday would be a brilliant sight in the centre of our defence right now.
And if Petric came with him we'd win the league by 10 points.
When we won the Cup in 1994 we denied Rangers That Died back-to-back trebles. P & W were magnificent.

Re: Overrated Utd players

I agree with Gauld; good wee player in Scotland but the way some of the media and fans went on about him made him out to be the great white saviour of Scottish Football, saying that, I'd take him back in a flash

All about opinions, but canna believe Super Mo has been mentioned in here, the guy was a colossus!

Re: Overrated Utd players

Freddy?
"Super" Mo?

The one that has got at me mostly is Billy Dodds, a man so overrated he carried a United side to top three in the league then was sold just before Christmas and United dropped like a brick (and never recovered until Craig Levein came along eight years later)

How can anyone thing a man with the goal scoring and work effort stats like him be overrated?

Jesus wept.

I know where some people are coming from regarding Gauld, those two great months can cloud over lasting memories.

I really don't see people as "overrated" in my eyes, I call a spade a spade, they are either, pish, alright (nothing more) or legend status.

Ahh Petric, now he was a legend, and boy could he header a ball! Gordan would've carried Welshie the whole season !!!
