What DUFC players were fans favourites and/or lauded in the press, and yet you never quite got the hype?
Controversial thread, I know.
And I'm gonna start it off by saying... sadly.
Freddy Van Der Hoorn.
Undoubtedly a nice guy and a bit of a 'character' to boot, but I dunno.I always thought he was a bit (for want of a better word)...pish.

Can't agree with Freddy, but I also know most folk won't agree with me when I say
Barry Robson.
Gavin Gunning was also vastly overrated, particularly 1st time round.

Van der hoorn pish?? No way mate he was a very good player very good on the ball he was one of my favourite players at that time as a kid, pish are players like tony mols, Alex Mathie, tony Smith, sandy Robertson, no way can you put Freddy in that bracket surely

Craig Easton
He was only saved as his mate (and better footballer) Steven Thompson was the target of the boo boys.
Easton was our answer to Eoin Jess - everyone waited for him to fulfil his potential but he never did.
always felt he was a headless chicken that would never take a shot when the opportunity arose - just passed it sideways. Hate seeing that. I don't care if it misses but when it sits up on the edge of the 18, your CAM should be taking a dig everytime

agree on van der hoorn, disagree on robson
controversial one for me - Billy Dodds
Aye he did well for us in first spell at the club, but he wasn't as good as the media and some fans made out. The bigger issue was that we went from having options up front of Kjell, Robbie Winters, Gary McSwegan and Andy McLaren to only one - dodds.
So when he left (and later admitted he got his agent to force the move to deadco), we were muntered., not because he was so good but because he was our only option.

Paton
Rankin

Hannah
Easton
Paddy Connolly

Ryan Dow- Absolute gash.

Recent players, Rankin an appalling lack of technique.
90s Hannah what exactly was he good at
Controversial one Hamish, not suggesting he was crap , great distribution and organisation however very dodgy on cross balls.
Siggi Jonsson - never got why so many liked him
Btw - know where Beharder is coming from on Hamish - great character but there were better goalies out there.

John Rankin. To believe there are people that genuinely wanted him to stay opposed to bringing in Flood. Ran about like a headless chicken last twa seasons, probs no helped by hopeless management but ah the same, unbelievably over rated.

Often (not always) thought Maurice Malpas overrated: very poor at his post defending balls from the right.
Sticks in my mind goals we lost in Edinburgh with tiny players out-jumping him at the far post when crosses came across the goal. Micky Weir and John Millar regularly beat him to the ball.
Unless, of course, I'm mistaken.

Thought his defending was generally very good but , as you say not great in the air - also have to say he was woeful going forward.

Gauld, he was good but I personally don't think he was as good as made out! My tin hat is firmly pn

Potentially a very controversial topic and I must immediately jump to the defence of Maurice Malpas.
Can a guy who played at left back over 800 times for Dundee United (his one-and-only club), captaining them to their first-ever Scottish Cup win and winning 55 caps for Scotland incl two World Cups and a Euros and a first inductee into the Dundee United HoF be over-rated?
Apparently so!

Paddy was class.
And Gauldy?? Wow. The wee man was unreal.
All about opinions though.

He was also part of a squad that got us relegated.
Mo was a good player don't think anyone would dispute that. And a DUFC legend.
But I can understand the argument that perhaps he was slightly overrated.
I always remember opposition supporters would refer to him as Maurice 'Backpass' in a Scotland sense.
P. S. Welcome to the Forum.

Malpas was a top drawer defensive full back, yes not as good going forward or in the air, but not one I'd put in the overrated category.
Seem to remember him playing vs Italy just after Lentini had moved for a world record transfer fee and not giving him a kick all night.

Was surprised to see Freddy mentioned but Malpas?
No fucking way!
Probably the most consistently good player over a very long time for club and country I have ever seen.
Maybe the weakness highlighted was occasionally true but I really didn't see him being mentioned in this topic.
Madness.
TEK, you have created an evil topic mate.

I secretly enjoy causing a bit of a stir
My debut post in defence of Maurice Malpas was deliberately muted but being a veteran now of three posts I feel I want to let rip....
Suggesting Maurice Malpas was over-rated is phukn nuts and I've never heard such sh!te in all my life.
He has a claim to be the greatest-ever Dundee United player in 107 years.
Over-rated
There, that's better.

Acht, Tek asked “What DUFC players were fans favourites and/or lauded in the press, and yet you never quite got the hype?”
And I never quite got the hype with Malpas, especially when he was getting capped for Scotland.
Early in his career, I thought he was great, but when he was established, I saw the bad flaw specified in my comment: often (not always) thought Maurice Malpas overrated: very poor at his post defending balls from the right.
I regularly thought he was overrated, in answer to Tek’s question, and it is a fact that he lost headed goals to tiny players all too often, and was part of the side which was relegated.
Oh, and welcome, smedDUm!
