Arbroath v Utd - Friday 15th July 7.45pm

None of this 'oh it's just the Betfred Cup I think we should treat it as a pre-season game and rotate the squad'.

Strongest XI available and I want a strong performance and win to lay down a marker as to how we want to conduct our business this season.

And I think we will. I'll go for 0-3 Utd (Murray,Cammy Smith, Obadeyi)

My team would be.

Bell

Toshney
Donaldson
Souttar
Dixon

Murdoch
Flood

Johnson
Fraser
Cammy Smith

Murray

Subs -
Zwick
Dillon
Spittal
Obadeyi
Durnan
Telfer
Robson

Mon Utd.

Re: Arbroath v Utd - Friday 15th July 7.45pm

Good thing is there's now options in most positions, there's also options in the formations available.  2 concerns are the overall quality of the squad is still just off where it needs to be IMO and the lack of options up top. We really need to sign a goal scorer, easier said than done I know.

Willo said on Arabzone that he won't play or train for a week due to his hip.

It'll be the same team that started against Brechin.

Too much commotion

Re: Arbroath v Utd - Friday 15th July 7.45pm

Ok, so early days and all that and not reading that much from the 90 minutes but Coll Donaldson still worries me at CH, Simon Murray can't be our 1st choice striker all season, our final ball is pish and Cammy Bell jumps 6 inches shorter than he stands.  A lot to work on.

Re: Arbroath v Utd - Friday 15th July 7.45pm

Early days, but souttar first choice ch currently, Murdoch is tidy player, Cammy smith should replace Fraser, need a target man asap, Murray needs a partner can't do it all him self, spiral is still shite, obadeyi and Johnson will cause problems!

Re: Arbroath v Utd - Friday 15th July 7.45pm

Donaldson, Fraser, Murray just aren't good enough.

Telfer played well, Dixon, Toshney and Murdoch did fine, Obedayi, Johnston did well too, Spittal just not strong enough. Smith & Anier seemed better than what they replaced but maybe not enough time.

Harry's a young laddie but really shouldn't have been getting pushed around by that centre, needs to man up or be told to.

Re: Arbroath v Utd - Friday 15th July 7.45pm

Bell although under pressure should do better

Donaldson, ive said it before and will say again reminds me of Gunning.

Murdoch looks a player

Telfer thought done well.

Tobe thought done no bad but seemed to tire quick.

Murray couldnt score in a barrel of fannys.

Overall the game was piss poor and we cant continue or afford to fuck easy chances all season.

Re: Arbroath v Utd - Friday 15th July 7.45pm

Its a feature amongst young laddies these days that they can't header a ball. I lost count of the amount of times Souttar and particularly Donaldson could've jumped, attacked and won high balls but instead tried to wrestle with the striker and lost out and allowed the ball to bounce or allowed the strker to take it into their chest. You attack the ball at your highest point and if a striker is in between you and the ball you eithet outjump them or you go through them.

Donaldson was shite the whole game. Harry shows more promise mind you. We really need an experienced centre half and a big striker though. The midfield looks decent particularly Telfer with the exception of Spittal who offered absolutely nothing yet again. Justin Johnson or Matty Smith should be replacing him.

The goal was a defensive shocker and a throwback to last season even if in the end it was a handball.

Re: Arbroath v Utd - Friday 15th July 7.45pm

Need a target man or partner to go along side Murray/Anier ASAP, we struggled to hold the ball up in the final third all night and crosses in the box were totally ineffective, even though a few of the balls in were pretty decent given the conditions.

Fraser is so one footed it is alarming, not being able to play a 10 yard pass with your weakfoot as a professional football player is unacceptable.

Still remain to be convinced that Spittals best position is on the wing, still believe his best performances for us have came at right back.

I was literally away to put this in here, it's was affecting us massively not having a vocal point up front, if we had a target man last night we win that game so easily

Re: Arbroath v Utd - Friday 15th July 7.45pm

I actually thought we played OK last night, passed it around well for spells, just lacked a cutting edge up front.  On another day we'd win that game 3 or 4 nil.  Still loads of work to do, but some good signs and no way as bad a performance as I've seen some people say on various other places.

I heard McKinnons interview after, singled out 'tosher' for praise. I thought their winger had him on toast tbh. Didn't impress me.

Aye he looks decent on the ball and up for a physical challenge, but lacks pace.  Which really isn't ideal when you are a full back.  He looked like a centre half playing at full back to me.

Re: Arbroath v Utd - Friday 15th July 7.45pm

Both Toshney and Dixon were decent on the ball and going forward but defensively both worry me massively.

Dixon inparticular was out of position so often. He really is a weak point in the team for me and I wasn't overly impressed with Toshney either.

Only two players who did impress me were Obadeyi and Johnson. Both quite excited me with their pace and directness.

Big Harry had an ok game as well actually and Anier took his goal well.

Big improvement needed though. We should be blowing teams like Arbroath away.

We are crying out for a leader at the back and a big Jon Daly type upfront.

Re: Arbroath v Utd - Friday 15th July 7.45pm

Watched first half live last night then the second half when I got home today and I thought we played okay, worryingly much the same as the last 18 months - good from midfield to goal and scary from our goal to midfield.

Defence is still very poor. Hopefully  the keeper will get better with match practice, sure I heard that was his first minutes in 14 months.

Toshney is a central defender, not a full back, that was clear in 90 mins v Arbroath.

Donaldson is not going to make it IMO.

Dixon is going to be Ray's blind spot I fear, Robson should be starting.

Spittal, Fraser and Telfer were okay-good in patches but not fussed about any of them tbh.

Thought Obadeyi and JJ were very good, final ball apart at times, like the cut of Murdoch and Murray done everything but score (which is his main objective granted)

Still think Anier deserves a run, would like to see him with Murray up top.

Bell

Robson
Souttar
Toshney
Spittal at RB?

Obadeyi
Murdoch
Flood
JJ

Anier
Murray

For me.

Re: Arbroath v Utd - Friday 15th July 7.45pm

Based on last night, my back 4 would be

Dillon. Toshney. Souttar. Dixon.  But Dixon would have 2 more games to impress or he'd be replaced by Robson.

Midfield would be.    Murdoch or Flood with JJ Spittal Fraser Obadeyi in front

Then Cammy Smith up front.  Murrays just not good enough.

Still adamant we need a striker in and on occasion the 4-1-4-1 could be 4-2-3-1 with Murdoch and Flood starting when required.
