what makes a good captain

in my opinion i like a captain to firstly of course have the respect of his teammates but also have a bit of aggression n real hunger in them that drives the team over the line in games, one of the reasons aberdeen won more than us in the 80s was because willie miller was a bastard and thats a compliment btw he didnt have half the talent narey had but he was a born winner and leader who would have killed his granny to win a game

Re: what makes a good captain

Someone who can take the game by the scruff of the neck and rouse and push on and inspire his team mates.

Barry Robson was a great United Captain in this regard.

Someone who isn't at United just now!! Can't think of one candidate on the books.

It's not where you're from it's where you're at.

Re: what makes a good captain

This may be a different angle, most successful teams have one thing in common, which is several on field leaders throughout the team. I

They need to be good enough to be first choice picks most of the time, they need to be able to influence their team mates to play well either by leading by example, or bollocking/encouraging/coaching when they are struggling, and they need to be mentally strong. They also need to be able to read a game and make decisions like when to up the pace or slow it down.

Last point is the same as tangerine ultras, in any game the opposition will try and intimidate you.and your leaders need to stand up.

Re: what makes a good captain

I just finished Graham Hunter's book on Spain's 3 Major Championship wins.  When I think of Spain I think possession futba, hardly any fouls and next to no bookings.  That is not strictly true though, as even they had a "dark arts" side that none of us were aware of that involves a WIN AT ALL COSTS ATTITUDE and extreme attention to detail to everything down to the first names of all the officials at games.  Unless your Captain is like Maradona and twice the ability of every other player in the team and able to inspire them, I don't think the role is as important as it once was.  Football has changed so much in the last 3 decades, being pretty much 3 touch max now and all technical and tactical and often about set pieces.
