25 years ago today....The Hampden Hoodoo strikes again

I cried tears of sadness and deep dissapointment in the car home from Hampden after Utd had cruelly lost the Cup Final by a single goal.I was 11 and this was the 4th time it'd happened in my young life.

You really do need to have slightly masochistic tendencies to support DUFC.

Re: 25 years ago today....The Hampden Hoodoo strikes again

I was 9, was totally heart broken and have never watched any highlights or replays of that game. 94 made up for it thankfully.

two outstanding memories of that day are of the first five minutes when we had hamish french goal disallowed for offside and then john clarks free kick hitting the inside of the post and spinning along the goal line and out for a bye kick, thinking "this isn't our day"

then the jackson equaliser and the bedlam that followed, thinking "this is our day after all " only to be kicked in the teeth.

fun fact - in the centenary book there is a photo of john o'neill scoring with myself in the background

Re: 25 years ago today....The Hampden Hoodoo strikes again

kiwiarab, I thought it was Freddy vH who hit one square post, then it went along the line and out the other side. Think this was the last year, or nearly the last year, that Hampden had square posts.

Syme was refereeing his last game, and is reputed to have told both teams beforehand that he wanted to avoid booking anyone. Luc Nijholt's eyes lit up: he could get away with murder.

Hamish French's goal was offside in accordance with the rules of the day, even although he collected it roughly on the half way line with another United player just inside the 'Well half, yet Ian Angus' goal stood with a player in United's 18 yard box clearly offside. Just one of the many honest mistakes Syme made in his final senior match.

I was gutted after this match, thinking we'd never win the cup..... but we've done it twice, and we'll do it again.

Syme never wanted to book anyone.

Never stopped him sending off 4 of our players after the match.

Re: 25 years ago today....The Hampden Hoodoo strikes again

I was 11 as well, and only allowed to go to the football for a year and a bit (First Game: January 1990 Dundee Derby). I was standing in the 'Family' section with the mix of United and Motherwell fans, it was also my first trip to Hampden so I thought it was just the norm.

Have a few memories of that day, going through with my Dad in his red Mazda and seeing the rest of the Springfield Arabs arriving via minibus at the same car park. Also when we equalised to make it 3-3 seeing Alan Main do a Klinsmann dive celebration.

All in all I wasn't to down heartened, as I thought this would be happening every few years or so. Never missed a final yet. I'm 9 for 2!

Re: 25 years ago today....The Hampden Hoodoo strikes again

I was raging with Syme after that game, prob the angriest I'd ever been (12 at the time right enough).

Next night my old man goes to spfa dinner and comes home with his autograph for me.  Says he got it, telling him I was a huge fan, then proceeded to tell him all the reasons I wouldn't stop going on about him.  He wasn't best pleased.

10 years old.  Maine definitely flogged that winner, no danger he was fouled.

Went to school on Monday and seemed like entire playground was asking "is your mother well Wayne?"  Ended up chasing a horrible little cunt Danny Atkinson into our class where I decked him with a chair.

Kids are bastards.
