Very difficult question here, but sometimes find myself wondering who would I have followed had I not discovered Dundee United or had they never come to existance.
I supposed coming from and living outside of Dundee all of my life makes it a more plausible question for me. My path was mainly encouraged by my dad and his friends. Most of them all followed other teams before starting to follow United in the late 70's. Bascically for me though, he just didn't want us following either of the bigot brothers which was a tough job growing up in Hamilton.
I would think I would probably have ended up following Motherwell or Hamilton being the local teams.

On my dad's side, My grandad bob was an Aberdeen fan. My gran was a Celtic fan (back to the famine days). When they split my grandad moved up to Fife from Glasgow. My grandad was a diehard sheep god bless his soul but he was set on letting my uncle and dad choose there own team as long as It wasnt the old firm.
So one afternoon In 1970 my dad and uncle went to Dens park.... The following weekend they went to Tannadice to experience both....
United or Dundee?
They both said they enjoyed watching the terrace scraps more at the united game than Dundee so they chose united. The reason we are all Arabs and one day my kids will be also.
Thank Phuck they chose united

Raith, used to watch them a bit when I was a kid when Utd were away

Raith Rovers.
My dad supported them as he was Kirkcaldy born and bred, same with most of my dads side of the family. My mums side was all gloryhunting Rangers fans that never went to a game but we're all 'diehards'.
Easy choice then. After I asked my dad to take me to Tannadice he did on the provision that he would take me to United for a season then the Rovers for a season. My heart went to United but always have a soft spot for the Rovers, even more so now my dad passed away a few years ago from cancer.
Best year in football, 1994. Going to see United beat Rangers at Hampden in the Scottish Cup, then going to see Raith beat Celtic at ibrox in the Coca Cola cup!

If United didn't exist I would have supported Dundee.

this for me too unfortunatly without a shadow of a doubt, having grown up 2 minutes from both grounds i was always as a kid getting snaeky ins to Dens when utd were away, taking about 8/9/10 year old..so was familiar with the other place fae an early age..also half my mates are dees...

Probably Celtic, shudder the thought.
Most of my mates supported United, the rest liked Celtic.
Online!
Aberdeen,probably.
My Dad was/is a born and bred Aberdonian,Aberdeen fan
He first took me to see Utd play Airdrie though and from the first game i went too that was the team for me.
We went to see Aberdeen play thereafter on occasion at Fir Park,Firhill,Douglas Park etc,but as i say my mind was already made up fae day 1 that DUFC were the team for me.
We also had a season where for some reason we went to see Albion Rovers 3 or 4 times (think the novelty was they were in the 1st Division, their highest ever placing) and i have till this day got a slight soft spot for them. They've always been the Black sheep in Lanarkshire footballing circles. We also once or twice went to see the odd Cup match that took our fancy at Hamilton or Motherwell.

Probably would've been a Derry gymnast.

Auld man was an arab and DUFC was the only preference of his that I chose to follow, probably due to life experience in my formative years (thank you Finn Dossing, Denis Gillespie and, probably the epitome of DUFC, Doug Smith).
Aunties and uncles on mither's side were all BNs so praise be Pat Reilly or I would have probably had to travel to Forfar.

I'll take the 5th amendment on this subject due to the heinous crime of following another Club in my primary years

Well done the wonderful older brother.
Unfortunately, my two sons took opposite views on everything. First born Scouts, Second born BB. First born TWF, Second born no interest in fitba'.

Aaaah c'mon we all make mistakes when we're bairns, I did see the light behind the goal at a Scottish Cup semi final at Tynecastle in 1987 whilst A.N. Brother was going through a midlife darkened crisis in A.N Unamed coo shed to the left
Ps. The timing of this post is deliberate, the mod is in his bed

That sounds quite similiar to me and my brother, went to many a game at Douglas Park, Fir Park, The Broomcupboard and Firhill, didn't quite manage a trip to Cliftonhill and still haven't to this day (I hope Albion Rovers never leave it tbh). Only difference though is my dad came from Larkhall, luckily was only ever United games mainly, along with Accies games when they were playing at any of those grounds when United wasn't an option.

Now coming from Montrose originally all my mates are either infirm, or sheep with the vast being sheep but I cannot even contemplate that so I'll stick with 3rd division fodder at Links Park.
