Re: On This Day

Aye Lilley was an important player that season, scored some important goals, the most obvious being that one at McDiarmid.  I'm sure he went to Leeds from Morton.  He played for Morton that season we were in the 1st Division; up front with that Rajamaki boy, they had a good team.

Think we were in for him off Leeds -then he went to Hearts , we kept trying eventually got him

this was the period Hearts tried to fuck us

Pressley , McSwegan

and Thomas Flogel was agreed to sign for us

also Leigh Jenkinson , he went there from St Johnstone and we got him too eventually unfortunately

they also refused to pay us for Derek Addison-that was a bit before though

Oh, what came of the things we once believed?

We played really well that day. Battled really hard as well and that was what made the difference.

Too much commotion

Did they not take Andy Webster off us at that time as well?
I remember when rumours were strong he was away to sign for us. Me and some mates went to Arbroath to watch him to see fit like.
Gutted when he went there

Re: On This Day

Unfortunately Dundee United's form around the Xmas period is as most of you will know pretty horrific even when we have a decent side.Indeed we haven't won any of our last TEN matches played on today's date (Boxing Day).7 of those matches have been defeats, and 3 were draws, only 1 of which (2-2 v Celtic away in 2006) could be considered a good point even. Our last match on Boxing Day was a very dissapointing (and shocking at the time) 4-1 defeat away to St.Mirren exactly 2 years ago to the day.

Indeed our last win on Boxing Day at all was 11 matches back, where we have to go back all the way back 19 years ago to 1996....but who did we defeat?.....Motherwell,at Tannadice.

Maybe a wee omen for today (fingers crossed). The result on that occasion was......

Dundee United 2 (McSwegan 35,Hannah 67) Motherwell 0
League - Premier Division
Thursday, December 26th, 1996, 3:00 PM at Tannadice Park
Attendance: 8,072
Referee: Bobby Tait (East Kilbride)
Mascot: Julie Hardie (St Peter's & Paul's)

A couple of days after his goal in this encounter David Hannah would make the familiar move (for Utd players) to the East End of Glasgow as he departed for Celtic in a £650,000 transfer.

Re: On This Day

As I've a fixation with referees and the SFA, I note the referee on that day in 1996 came from 10 miles away from Motherwell (as you'll know Tek!). Today's official is from Bonkle, 7 miles from Motherwell.

Re: On This Day

30 years ago today, I was taken to my 1st ever 1st team game. 0-0 vs Dundee at Tannadice, team of Thomson, Holt, Beaumont, Malpas, Hegarty, Narey, Redford, Bannon, Gallacher, Dodds, Sturrock.  Don't remember a thing about the game TBH, I know we stood in the old enclosure under the main stand, always used to go there, loved it on there as a kid.

Re: On This Day

Believe it or not Tek, I was actually at that game, still hoping to see my hero namesake playing, even tho it was a couple of month since he had played.

Disappointed that he wasnae there, was so overjoyed after the game, think that was when my old man and granda told me he probably wouldna play again as he was definitely leaving the Club.

Edited to say, give me a break lads, I was only 5 and a half.

Re: On This Day

In the pub next to Hampden after the game we were all saying that is as good as it gets as a United fan. Great day, and a good crowd too: doubt if Celtic, getting to play at this same stage in their own city today, will get such a crowd against Ross County.

Re: On This Day

We went from being the belle of the ball, everybody wanted us on their arm, to Jodie Foster on the pinball table in the sapce of about 36 hours.

Made good business sense though.

Never knew Sandaza played in Japan,Bill.

Thought he was in La Liga with some mob that he got promoted.

I always rated him at Utd,pity he was injured so much.

Interesting angle. Two days before that match newly appointed Gordon Strachan chose Lee Wallace for his first Scotland squad. I thought Wallace was one of the worst players on the park at Tannadice in that cup game, but it shows the importance of being with certain Glasgow clubs if you want a Scotland cap.

O/T but talking lb's, ours that day Barry Douglas must be worth Strachan taking a trip to watch given how well he's done abroad.  IMO (without having seen him recently) he'd be behind ARob, but better than the others getting game time there.

Willing to bet Strachans never heard of him tho.

His Spanish team Girona managed to fail to get promoted from "impossible to be beaten" positions not once but twice last season.
