Been a few times, mostly when the kids were wee. It's a lovely place with interesting walks around it, quite a bit of history there and a bit of faded elegance about the hotels which have seen better days, like many seaside towns.

Was there again a couple of years ago when I went to see Erasure (!) in a forest near Pickering, and thought it was more run down than I'd recalled. It's a poor road into the town off the M1 too, takes ages longer than you might think. Thought the pubs weren't great, mind you, and seem to think there's a Rangers club in the town centre too. 

Depends what you're after, but I enjoy places like Scarborough, and it has a Wetherspoons!

Scarborough is a typical seaside town which has seen better days. It's rather similar to  Blackpool, in that it's a bit flash and gaudy in parts. And it is very hilly....

I personally don't like it, I'm afraid. But I know quite a few  people who swear by it and go back year after year. And bairns usually love it.

If it's just sea air and sand you're after, Arbroath is as good a bet as any.

But don't be influenced by me, I was just there on day trips. Ask around, look at local hotels online, and check them out on TripAdvisor.

Holidayed there a lot as a kid and have been back a few times since. I think it's great, probably for a lot of sentimental reasons!

My tip would be to stay out of town a bit (if you have a car). We hired a cottage in a wee village nearby (Brompton-by-Sawdon) and took day trips into Scarborough and other places. I love it down that neck of the woods. Hospitality is great, not matter how isolated or quiet a restaurant or county pub, you always seem to get great service and fayre.

Have to admit of only ever visiting the place once, on a day trip, not from Dundee BTW, but from York where I was staying for a week with my wife and kids when they were younger. Think it was 2005. As folk said, a smaller version of Blackpool, or a bigger version of Arbroath. Canna fault the place based on the time I spent there. Kids enjoyed it. Dont know if they still have the funicular railway from the seafront up to the higher part of the town. Nearest you'll get me on to a roller-coaster.

I'm definitely coming round to going there.Sounds great for kids (which is pretty important for me).
