Best City you've been to on Holiday?

I've enjoyed London,Prague, and Amsterdam but i think my favourite was Toronto (been twice).Such a cool, laidback but cosmopolitan feel to the place. And manages to not feel too 'touristy' into the bargain.

I would love to go to New York,Paris and Bruges at some point.

Re: Best City you've been to on Holiday?

New York pre Millenium.

Berlin or Rome post Millenium.  With Berlin shading it coz Romans rip you off at all they do at every opportunity!

And a special mention to Sydney (no not him) the City.  Went there for New Year a decade ago and that was an experience and a half instead of watching it at 1pm on Hogmanay on SKY News.  Did the Harbour Bridge Climb a couple of days before the fireworks too which was amazing.

I would agree with that. There are few cities to rival it.

Not there as often as i would like to be but still get a wee buzz everytime i get off at Waverley and walk along Princess Street and see the Castle etc.

Re: Best City you've been to on Holiday?

Brugge is a great wee place, been there a few times. Ostend no bad. Was in Berlin with the army in '56, not such a great place back then. Cologne is good. Venice is OK-ish. Paris is crap. Used to love London, but big changes there and not for the better. York is OK (pity about the futba team manager!) Never liked Edinburgh or Glasgow. Went to Blackpool four years ago - huge mistake! And been to loads of smaller places too numerous to mention. But my all-time favourite has to be Rudesheim on the Rhine, very touristy but great fun.

But ken what?  The biggest thrill is the night train to Dundee as it approaches the Tay Bridge and there, spread out before you, are the lights of home!

Sydney - great combo of amazing scenery and outdoor lifestyle, with a good level of culture and night life. Good energy to the place.

Frankfurt was good in the 90s, architecture, food, beer and the ladies were all top notch

Re: Best City you've been to on Holiday?

Every city I've been to has held it's own attractions, there's always stuff to see and do.

Dusseldorf has a huge and never ending collection of bars side by side, and is right on the Rhine. Berlin is huge, with the old east/west contrast in buildings, you'd need a fortnight to take everything in! Prague's attractions are well known, great public transport, stunning buildings. Amsterdam, Gothenburg, Paris, Cologne, Barcelona, Blackpool........ (trying to think where I've been).

Most recently in Lisbon: lots to see, good and cheap transport, in fact the city was generally not a rip off that many can be. I'd recommend it. Saw all the historical sites in central Lisbon, plus Belem is worth a visit, as is Sintra, half an hour on the train for a few quid. The area south of the vast Vasco da Gama Bridge is very modern, a great walk along the Tagus with bars.

Also visited the big football grounds. Talked to Ryan Gauld as he was on same flight (asked him to come back to United in January). He'd probably get slagged by sections of the support as being shite anyway if he did.

Presently, I'd say Lisbon is the place to go..................... but only until my next city visit.

Re: Best City you've been to on Holiday?

Agree with Pat, very few cities I’ve been to that I’ve not enjoyed, every one offered something different.

Off the top of my head I didn’t enjoy Seoul or Hanoi but there was circumstances involved in both of them, on another day I may have had a ball.

Favourites are tough, I love New York and London for a busy short break, I love Rome, Berlin, Prague and Barcelona for more relaxed sightseeing and night life.

Much like songs it’s impossible to pick my favourite, so I’ll go for a top 10 of:  Tokyo, New York, Ho Chi Minh City, Sydney, San Francisco, Chicago, Kyoto, Berlin, Auckland and Barcelona as my top 10 in order.

I also like the Middle East cities of Doha, Muscat, Abu Dhabi and Dubai for the service and quality of life working there but not necessarily as a holiday destination. And I’ve not even mentioned Vegas or Amsterdam that are two of the greatest places on earth in a dirty party kinda way.

I lived in Edinburgh (well Leith) for near 10 years and thought it was one of the best places on earth, now think it's a stuck up city of No voting, Tory sympathising, Labour voting, JK Rowling abiding bastards.

Can confirm that Bruges is well worth a visit (fondly remember toppling off a bar stool when in drink and as I clawed my way upright on the bar the barman looked down at me and asked......if I'd like another drink  ...my kind of town.

Madrid is a great shout for a long weekend.....took in an Athletico game when I was there (club museum well worth checking out)......city really buzzing at night with people heading into the clubs at 3am

My current favourite is Palermo....been a couple of times and while it undoubtedly has problems it's grown on me.....the street markets are fantastic

Re: Best City you've been to on Holiday?

Not a huge "city break" person TBH.

Been to Paris, Hated it. Not a fan of London although it has it's good points.  Barcelona was ok, wasn't there long enough to see much tho.  Only place I really liked was Salvador in Brazil, the contrast of rich and poor is staggering, but the people are superb and some of the places to see are stunning.

Re: Best City you've been to on Holiday?

Can't whack London. Great city

Been to Prague, Brussels, Bruge, Paris, Santander, Amsterdam, Berlin and loads in UK.

Manchester is good. Used to live in Edinburgh, prefer Glasgow now though.

Don't go to Sheffield. Ever.

Santander was good. City with a beach. Cheap as fuck. No Brits abroad either. Flights fae Ryan Air as well. Went last summer for a week. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

worked over in Palermo for 3 weeks last June..Slap bang in the centre is very nice place but a proper shithole on the outskirts.

Big bottles of Moretti are fantastic.

If your ever back in Italy you should try the draught Moretti Rosso - excellent beer

Your bang on about the suburbs - awful - a result of the Mafia and corrupt polticians in the sixties and seventies - very depressing.

I love Santander and the other the cities in the Bay of Biscay...Bilbao, San Sebastian but the best for me is Gijon. Great city with some of the best bars I've ever been in. Gijon has a week long music and culture festival in August, and has all the positives you listed about Santander, the beach in the centre of town and no brits is always is a plus. Plus the cider....

Just remembering we met Nacho Novo in Gijon in an Italian restaurant. We tried winding him up, pretending we thought he was the water and asking for directions to the toilet.

Re: Best City you've been to on Holiday?

There was an international festival in Santander the week I was there. Big festival type thing near our hotel every night. Loads of food and drink stalls. Was magic. 4 beers and 4 pintos 10 euros. The bars were good. Me and the missus shared a lovely bottle of red. 8 euros. Don't think we paid more than 35 euros for a meal, meal usually included starter, mains, bottle of red and coffees. The Tapas was ace as well. Definitely going back. Hotel was lovely as well.

Re: Best City you've been to on Holiday?

Love New York, lucky enough to have been 3 times, last time was with the wife who wanted to go because she loved Sex and the City and she thought New York was all romanticised and perfect just like in the show, however I grew up watching The Warriors and the French Connection which showed the gritty side of the place. And when we went from the airport to the hotel via subway, the first stop stank of pish, the next vomit, then the last was shit. When we got off she then saw a big rat on the tracks and that was her first introduction to New York, needless to say it didn't meet her lofty expectations.

I still dragged her on the subway train for a day out in Coney Island, just so I could live out my Warriors fantasy.

Same here, especially when its coupled with a United game.  Just think its the perfect blend of Arts, Entertainment, History, Nightlife and Shopping.  Not too big that you get overwhelmed either.

Will be there for the Hearts game, looking forward to showing the boy the castle as well.  Cant wait really

Re: Best City you've been to on Holiday?

It's a tough question.

Most things that make a city great are the 1 or 2 iconic things, great architecture, location or certain social scene.

Loved historical cities like Prague, Venice and Athens but Venice's stale water stunk and a lot of Athens smelled of ammonia fae smack head whore and client pish. Cairo is a hatred filled western hating over populated shithole but the pyramids were worth the visit. The cunt that tried to enter my toilet on a Nile boat trip to wipe my arse found that Scottish Arabs don't want that type of service though. He will probably never forget that "unaware of the culture" reaction he got.
All the best major cities I've  holiday'd at have major down sides like the afore mentioned and Vilnius, Amsterdam,London and other English shitbuckets, Krakow, Wrowclaw, Marseille, St Etienne Brussels etc, so I agree with the lad who surprisingly said Edinburgh.

Can't believe that's right though. Obviously need to travel more.

Next few vists won't be cities though. Going for Scottish historical sites. Love Dunnottar Castle, Stirling and Edinburgh's too and Scara Brae is the one I really fancy. Will head up when the weather is less hurricanish and rent a wee ancient cottage for a week and get stone age pished.

As a half-Orcadian who spent all the war years in Orkney I have to say Skara Brae is absolutely amazing! I was last there in 2009 and visited several historical sites of which the islands have quite a number, the Ring of Brodgar, for example, older than Stonehenge, Maes Howe burial chamber, Skail House adjacent to Skara Brae, and closer to our time St Magnus cathedral in Kirkwall, and many others. A week might not be long enough!

Travelled by road from Leeds with 2 of my sons in 2002, and passed through spectacular scenery en route. The view of the Old Man of Hoy from the ferry is really stunning.
