Merger close in 1999?

Former SPL "chief"  Rodger Mitchell claiming that United and Dees were 3 days away from merging.

Talking of Marr he tweeted yesterday: “It wasn’t just mooted, it was done and dusted on the Friday then off on the Monday.

“He had registered the name and the strips with us, as he had to. It was done.”

I rekon Marr tried it on the Friday and by the time the SPL opened their office on the Monday our GTF was received.

Not sure about that being factual.  I know McLean and United were very close to buying dundee out years ago. It was all to be done in a Fife hotel until one of the marrs said no at the last minute due to the abuse family would have taken over it. The other brother was all for it.

Re: Merger close in 1999?

My understanding at the time was more akin to what B+T is saying that it was for all intents+purposes a takeover of Dundee by Utd rather than a merger (it was just being tarted up as that to try and placate their supporters somewhat).

The team was gonna play at Tannadice and have Utd in the name so go figure.

Re: Merger close in 1999?

Was it not in football terms officially a merger as it would have tied up Dundees licence and stopped a new team in the city taking their place in the league set up.

In reality tho it was to be a takeover with the name Dundee United, the ground Tannadice, the strips tangerine and Utds players remaining while Dundees were let go.

Was this the merger that Angus Cook was involved in.
