The Poppy

Is it just me or has the meaning of this symbol been totally lost on people?

It's like some folk wear it to 'celebrate' our Armed Forces and War rather than as a mark of respect to the victims of WW.

No it's no just you.....

Plus we're now getting the poppy wearing weeks ahead of TV and people getting slagged off if they don't when wearing it should be a personal choice.

That is another bone of contention.

That lassie Sienna Miller was absolutely slaughtered for not wearing one on the Graham Norton Show.

Are people really that fucking sad that that would bother them? And if so why?

I always wear one and always will. I think everyone should, weather it be red or white, however It is down to personal choice.

It does annoy me when folk talk about no wearing it "cause the British army has pure killed millions of innocents" etc. In some spiel they read off some half arsed website.

However I remember speaking to a auld guy about 10 year ago who never wore a poppy, he said his father who was a doctor and fought in the war always telt him not to wear one as if the British Govt. Are happy to send men to die or get seriously injured then it should be paying for their families and/or treatment, not passing the responsibility on to the taxpayer via some "patriotic appeal". Which I always thought was actually a pretty good shout in fairness.

Poor show when we spend billions on trident but rely on the generosity of the public to treat our injured and retired personnel.

Re: The Poppy

It's been politicised to fuck and lost all meaning.  I don't wear one, doesn't mean I don't respect those who lost their lives in world wars.

Re: The Poppy

If folk want to wear one that's fair enough. It has been politicised IMO. The whole thing has turned into a circus. My grandad served in WW2 and he never wore one. My gran lost her dad in WW1 having never met him and she never wore one. Just cause folk don't wear them doesn't mean you disrespect the war dead. I've been to the Menin Gate and the Somme and it was one of the most moving experiences of my life.

Re: The Poppy

They are getting worn earlier and earlier. Folk will have them on on their summer holidays soon.

Folk even have them on their cars.

Re: The Poppy

What the Celtic fans did today was a disgrace though. If they feel that strongly about it they should stay out the game until the silence is done. TBH I'm not in favour of these silences at the game. It's a recent thing and there are plenty opportunities for people to show their respect on Rememberance Sunday and on the 11th itself.

Re: The Poppy

I'm not in favour of them at the football either.

That said if you can't keep quiet for one minute of your life chances are you're a cunt.

Re: The Poppy

Also how come Sevco are ALWAYS at home these weekends? They have these huge displays which is pretty crass IMO. Saw on Twitter that Celtic donated 10k to Poppy fund, Partick donated 3k. Sevco donated zilch but had a cannon at the game.

Re: The Poppy

Minutes silences at football should be football related, nothing else.

About a dozen of them turned their backs on the silence, chanted stuff and generally made a cunt of themselves.

Me too. I also visited several war cemeteries in Flanders, and shed a tear in each one on reading inscriptions on gravestones. All these brave lads slaughtered for nothing. I imagine there isn't a family in the land which hasn't been touched by this horrific butchery. My gran's brother, aged only 17, was killed on the very first day of the Somme offensive.

Re: The Poppy

One of my nieces lives in Dingwall with her husband and 2 wee lads, who support Ross County. They were all at the game, and could clearly hear outcries such as "phuck off" "@rseholes" etc. etc. during the minute silence. I watched the game on BT in HD and I could hear it on the tele. The BT commentator, think it was Derek Rae, said it was shameful that some people couldna show a little respect in somedy else's house.
