I don't know if it's sub-conciously been Dundee Utd's own search for a new Manager,but recently i cant stop watching video interviews of former greats (Sir Alex,Wee JYM,Jock Stein,Bill Shankly,Matt Busby,etc).
Good picture of Wee Jim at Scotland training at 1:47 in.
My question is what makes a top Scottish Manager? What made these guys 'special'?
All these guys weren't particulary GREAT players...was this dissapointment the driving force behind their managerial drive?
Was it their upbringing?*An unpalatable truth on here perhaps but most great Scottish Manager's have came from either Glasgow or (mostly) Lanarkshire.
Lanarkshire (Jim McLean,Matt Busby,Jock Stein) Glasgow (Alex Ferguson),Ayrshire (Bill Shankly).
Why is this? Is is their tough upbringing?Or is it all just coincedence?

Been on a bit of a Scottish fitba Youtube splurge tonight and stumbled across this Walter Smith Q+A conducted by Iain King.
Now i've heard wattie Smith talk about Jim McLean countless times in the past but i don't think i've ever heard him be so frank+open about him before.
The wee anecdote he tells about 'the wee problem' him and Wee Jim had is FAF.

I'm sure that it's a really interesting interview mate but if you think I'm going to watch an interview in East Kilbride with Walter Smith and Iain King then you've been on the red vino tonight

As i said on a right Scottish Fitba splurge.Loved this interview with Wee JYM,particulary the bit about him turning down Rangers.
Wee Jim has a right Dundonian twang now btw 'Ken this and ken that'.

Great question, I would say that great Scottish managers have these qualities:
- hard bastards
- extensive knowledge of football
- innovative (tactically and in terms of training and preperation)
- relentless pursuit of footballing perfection
my worry is, in football today the players have all the power (along with their pear ciders, iphones and minter haircuts), so any hard bastard managers who tries to set standards and instill discipline is going to struggle
