Ouch, craft beer getting quite the kicking!

FWIW, I hate the term 'craft beer'. There's good beer and there's bad beer. Totally subjective.

For me,

Good beer - Four ingredients (Malt, hops, water, yeast), no artificial preservatives, tasty.

Bad beer - preservative-laden, uses fish guts to filter, tastes bad or bland.

I've had many craft beers that fail the one true test - taste.

I've never had a 'big' brewery beer that passes all my good beer requirements.

why is it so fucking dear then?

me and yer man hunted were getting robbed blind drinking the stuff yesterday on the Great western road -gie me the preservative shit at a fraction of the cost anyday.

Bring the price down i might get in to it.

Overpriced.

Ok, cue bore mode.

It tends to be stronger. More malts required, more expense.

Stronger beer gets hit with heavier tax. Brew a beer over 5% and you'll pay a good hit more to the UK taxman - see UK Stella, now sub 5%. Keeps down costs.

Artificial preservatives are far cheaper than natural preservatives (hops). A pint of Punk uses 40 times more hops than a commercial lager. That costs.

Even given all that, it isn't even more expensive. It's a myth. In Dundee city centre, a pint of Punk costs £4.30 and is 5.4%, or 79.6p per unit of alcohol. A pint of Tennent's costs £3.30 and is 4%. That's 82.5p per unit.

Factor in the fact that it's those artificial preservatives that are giving you the most brutal hangovers every Sunday morning and it's a no contest.

'Craft' all the way.

You can also get a pint of Punk for less than £4.30 if you're willing to scrape the barrel.

Point stands. Good beer = good value. Not just financially.

What's your cheapest pint in the boozer?

Remember i'm going for a night out

don't want to have to be carted after drinking an affy strong poncey craft 5+% carry on after about 3 pints

be better off financially ordering methalated spirits off the internet and having a couple of nips whilst watching Strictly.

Re: Things other folk like that you don't get

If it's pint after pint after pint you want, you're right, Brewdog aint for you.

Pint of lager is £4.15.

But you wouldn't catch me throwing back pints of that all night.

I'll spend £40 on a good sesh in Brewdog. I'll drink no more than five pints of beer all in though. That'll be around 8-10 different drinks.

It all depends what you're after from a night out I suppose.

It's no poncey though. Proper Dundee boys coming in every weekend getting on board the good beer train.

Re: Things other folk like that you don't get

Not quite ,wouldn't say that just a casual question/observation going forward.

£4.15 a pint best case scenario -nah i'll not be coming in at Dick Turpin prices.

I think it's the whole "scene" surronding craft beers that puts a lot of folk off.  Seems to be a world frequented by bearded, sleeved-tattooed guys who have a penchant for wearing chinos.

I buy some of these beers now and again to drink in the house but I'd never go to one of the pubs that specialise in them, went once after work with some of my colleagues to the Brew Dog place in Edinburgh, couldn't wait to get out.

It does have a bit of a hipster tag associated with it unfortunately. Thankfully our bar is a lot more diverse than that. In fact, I'd say it's easily the most diverse range of customers of any pub I've worked in. It's totally normal to see a squad of 20-something lads sitting next to a group of foreign students, beside an old couple in their 70s, beside a group of gamers. The only common strand between them is that they're into beer.

It was definitely the hipsters who first got on board with it in this country, you can see it's moving beyond that now.

We can agree though that the Edinburgh bar is a bit of a toilet.

Caesar Augustus was my lightbulb moment in beer. Had it on draught in DCA, couldn't believe how good it was!

Haven't had it for ages but has good memories.

She told me he is "nae bufty".  I don't dislike him for any reason other than him being annoying and unfunny but can't get my head round why he or labour would think votes would be won by him coming up here dressed as Ann fucking Widdecombe would have Scots voting labour.

IMO the whole idea of them sending him up here, especially during the referendum, was to try to provoke a reaction. And by that, I don't mean to his politics. Clearly, he doesn't always cross-dress, so I, for one, am deeply suspicious of the fact that he appeared in a potentially highly charged situation, dressed as a woman. All it would take would be one "Yes" supporter to have lost control for a wee moment and said something unwise and bingo! the unionist papers would have been full of faux-outrage and offence for weeks. And that's what it was all about IMO....

Possibly bud.  I was baffled more by him arriving in that state than anything related to politics, the referendum or his stand up routines. It was obviously a rare, bizzare stunt that most of us don't get but some thought was a masterclass.
If politicians think the running of the country will be swayed by that sort of stuff they must think we are all big brother watching maniacs.
