Not a joke btw, serious question. Chelsea were criticised for doing this recently. They appeared to be doing it to prevent other teams from getting them then loaning them out. In other words to reduce competition. We appear to be doing it as part of the grand 5 year plan to build up a huge stock of our own young players as well as buying in potential from other clubs. But is this in the hope that a) we unearth the odd gem for the 1st team or b) we unearth the odd gem in the hope that we can sell them on for a big fee or at least a decent sized development fee?
My old boy tried to get one laddie on loan last year and was told by one of Utd's scouts that the club were reluctant to loan players out since Utd's reputation as a club which rears good young players means they immdiately have an (inflated) value to the club and loaning them out runs the risk of reducing this value if they either struggle on loan or, get injured. So we were stuck with loads of players in the development squad kicking their heels getting little or no game time. It was not about the laddies development, it was about the sell-on value to the club. The boy actually said this policy came from McNamara rather than Campbell btw. Mental.

52 now Jassem Sukar signing just confirmed on official website

Unreal. Right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing.
Offline
Aboot 30 of the 52 are also not good enough. Far too many.
A new manager will have a field day culling thon and freeing up some funds.
Offline
Fae the website first team member only and no mentioned Sukar!
My take on the team, feel free to agree or disagree but i'm going for:
Seán Dillon - Keep, need some sort of experience but should be a back up player now
Paul Dixon - Keep, hopefully didn’t fancy JMc style of play and a new manager can get Dicker back
John Souttar – Undecided - Rocket up the Arsehole, yer no a player yet son!
Callum Morris – Keep, if he can stay fit and get some defending advice rather than “PANIC”
Paul Paton - Know Pates has his critics but if fully fit i.e. first season then he is a decent player.
Billy Mckay – Must keep / get / secure / build a team around (J.McLean 10yr contract)
John Rankin – Keep experience and can still drive other on around him
Jordan Moore - Keep until the end of the season and hope the lad gets there. #survivor
Robbie Muirhead - Punt for me offered little to nothing so far
Chris Erskine – Can he ever get fit and last 90mins???????
Ryan McGowan – Keep and try and tie up on another contract. Offers pleanty going forward too
Marc McCallum – Will he ever be good enough???
Ryan Dow – Get Rid, laddie needs a new challenge and one good performance is between 4 poor
Simon Murray – Raw but with work he might be a player worth keeping
Charlie Telfer – Still young and would hope he can kick on under a new manager
Mark Durnan – Get shot, looks a liability at the back, been found out at this level IMO
Aidan Connolly – Canny see him ever being anything other than an impact player from the bench
Mario Bilate – Gone / Get shot / maybe the worst signing in living memory
Blair Spittal – Keep starting to produce but needs consistency
Michal Szromnik – get shot, too many kids in the sticks
Scott Fraser – Looks a real good player!!
Scott Smith – Unknown really only cameos so far
Euan Spark – As Scott Smith
Aaron Kuhl – Get Shot ASAP, Dunfermline game was a joke
Henri Anier - oh ya whore ma side, however need to say sorry to Mario, Anier actually takes it
Coll Donaldson – Canny get a game in front of Durnan, says it all really
Adam Taggart - was that actually a shot at the weekend??? Get rid!!!!
Darko Bodul – MMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmm pass, canny figure you out Darko!!!!
Luis Zwick – Keep - looks a decent keeper in the making, but is the making our No 1 jersey??
Get shot of about 10/12 as far as I’m concerned

He must have done a count before speaking as he couldnt answer this a few month back!

we really do have to trim the fat. Ridiculous to have so many lads on the books.
Offline
I'd imagine that at the end of the season a lot will be trimmed

I'm afraid an affy lot of the young lads we have on the books are not good enough, some of whom came through the academy, others who have been brought in by JM over the last 3 years.
You've also got the dross like Anier, Pole in Goal 2, Joe McGovern, McCallum, Connolly, Bilate and tbh, Telfer.
Offline
I would take at least 3 of those players over Ryan Dow.
Offline
I've stuck up for Dow an awful lot but it's getting harder to defend him now. You are right, he either delivers the goods under the new man or he goes at the end of the season as well.
Offline
yeah I am at the end of my rope. I dont think its potential anymore. Hes at his ceiling, its not terrible, but its not starting XI for Dundee United IMO. If we keep him, have him come off the bench for a change of pace.

Paton, Erskine, Dow, Szromnik, Taggart, Kuhl, Bilate, Anier, Durnan and Murray would all ideally leave. It all depends on contract situation tho, no idea who's run out when. Some of the younger lads will inevitably go too as will Souttar probably which is real disappointing.
Connolly and especially Telfer should come good with the right guidance and Muirhead is potentially very, very good but needs disciplined instilled and needs managed properly, no way I'd be getting rid of him.

There will be a huge player cull in the summer if we get a good manager

Agreed with most of this. Connolly is a concern though. Someone needs to work out what his best position is and teach him to use his right foot.

Average wage of around half of them bound to be fairly low.
Maybe they decided to flood the squad with low paid ruff diamonds in the hope one or 2 shine through like Andy Robertson.
Others will turn out to be semi precious and a few fools gold but easy for them to justify this sort of radical formula when recent sales and financial successes can be flung in as factual.
Then chuck the dudds back and hire another shitload of young promise and the occasional damaged goods whilst hoping like fuck that we can hit the jackpot like we have.
If the formula is sign 100, sell 3 for £8million, send 97 back to were they belong ÷ timing = success then they've not been far of but timing was off so no success other than financial.
Hope any radical formula in future includes real success.
Oor hope there depends on whether we sign a manager that can demand a change to ST's formula. Even tweek it to build a team that isn't sold before giving us some silverware.
We'd probably take that.

phobia, absolutely zero doubt that was the strategy. I think that will change though, and it should! Eventually the "throw at the wall and see what sticks" strategy is bound to fail from the financial aspect and as you saw, the product on the park suffers as you put players in who arent nearly good enough. I understand what they were doing, but I dont think the club should be run like that. Be more prescriptive moving forward please.

Again and again we will see the same scenario unfold if ST stays and brings in a yes man or contracted trophy magician.
Edit to say - ane that makes trohies dissappear fae yer grasp.

Only a manager with a strong character on a different contract,a drastic change to player contract law and/or a new chairperson to run us will make a difference or create the hope the support craves bud.
Think Justine might be on the way, brothers done. Hope we get a strong minded manager on a different contract and we'll have to deal with the contract laws regardless.
Relieved that change is on the way. No idea what to expect. New hope is needed but most who know the running of the club best must be purple in the face as they hold their breath.
