Re: Dundee to let upto 3,000 Military in for free v County

The Battle of Loos is a big thing and it's only right that it's commemenorated in the city. I'm glad we're away though that weekend tbh. We would have no doubt did something similar

Commemorated,yes.

It has nothing at all to do with football though.

This looks and feels like shameless PR imo.

Wonder if Dumbarton will bring out a 'Clydebank Blitz' tribute strip.

A tad harsh Tek

but the strip is a step too far -that's the one on the right of the photo eh? the other boy is wearing a pair of 70s curtains.

I'd written a big screed earlier about mixing sport and politics, but possibly fortunately, I managed to lose it from my phone when posting.

Suffice to say football and politics shouldn't be mixed, in my view.

Re: Dundee to let upto 3,000 Military in for free v County

Far be it for me to say what Dundee FC should do and shouldn't do. However, if they had played in a 1915 style shirt for the weekend to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the battle which saw Dundee families decimated in the name of British Imperialism that would have been tasteful IMO. That strip is horrible though.

However, I'm not a Dee and what they do is up to them.

I don't think they are trying to make money out of it tbh. If it had been us at home then no doubt it would have been us.

Maybe. However is remembrance political? I'm not for the poppy stuff at futba games and that. I've also never made a political statement at a game. The whole thing is a minefield.

What about the 1968 Olympics and the Black Power salute. Was that not on? It's one of the most powerful sporting images of the 20th Cemtury? Should South Africa been allowed to compete at sporting events during Apartheid?

Very New Rangers.

But then again they were always very Old Rangers too.

Good points, Hunted, and I'll try to deal with them in turn.

Poppies: wear one at the game if you want, but I'm not a supporter of poppies on football jerseys, or badges with club logos and poppies.

1968 Olympics: the guys weren't taking part in an officially sanctioned protest, far from it. That was up to the individual(s), and as such was okay by me.

South Africa and apartheid: each sport dealt with that abhorrent issue on an individual basis. Gary Player was taking part in world-wide golf events, Kevin Curren took part in US, Paris,Ozzie and Wimbledon Grand Slam events, Rugby Union and cricket teams still toured under different guises, and to the world's shame, it wasn't really until the mid 'eighties that a more concerted effort took place to ban South Africa from all team sporting gatherings. But it took international boycotts on a 'wider than sport' basis for sporting contact to be banned. In the case of apartheid, it was very different from poppies/black power/red cards for Thatcher/minutes silences for royalty etc.  Apartheid wasn't political. It was barbaric, akin to events in Syria/Iraq presently (all my opinion, of course).

Footnote: Gary Player (who referred to black South Africans as aliens in an autobiography, forgetting that white folk were, in the broadest sense, the aliens), Kevin Curren, Johan Kriek, Jody Schekter and the rest of the white South Africans who were allowed uninterrupted access to world sporting tournaments throughout their careers were probably exempted on the basis of their not being part of team events, where all-white restrictions were put in place. In short, they could hardly be blamed for not being black.
