Would also be amazed if anymore than a couple of hundred tickets were requested.
And i think they know that.

But aren't all the veterans from the Great War sadly no longer with us?

Exactly mate.
That's why I find it a tacky bit of PR.
They're going down the whole Sevco route of 'Salute our brave Lads' and using an outrageously tenous Dundee link to justify doing so.

I eagerly await the day when clubs start letting in other public servants in for free

This might sound controversial but why do armed forces personnel deserve freebies more than anyone else, or for that matter all this thanks and respect we're supposed to bestow upon them. Different years ago but now no one forces them to do what they do it's their choice of earning a wage that way.

some would say the reason we are not FORCED to join is because we have people who make that decision to volunteer. Whether for personal advancement or whatever the reason they volunteer, for that alone, they deserve our respect.
Offline
They don't volunteer they take a job, don't see us having parades every year for nurses who do just as important a job for not great money and have to pay over £100 every year to be allowed to keep doing it.
They deserve only the same respect as everyone else, none of this glorifying shit that gets thrown at us every few months.

I'd think more of this gesture if it was United/Celtic/Aberdeen they were playing and giving away free tickets.
Good PR from them but i can see right through them.

Its what we call a volunteer army whether they are paid or not. Think we are all relieved it is versus the alternative. I sure as fuck am.
Much respect to other professions but id step into just about any profession over one which I stand a chance of being in some hell hole for 12 months with a chance of having a limb blown off.
To each his own TS but I must say I despair like f uck when I read stuff like this.

There is a big event in town to commemorate the Battle of Loos so they may get more than a few hundred but no disrespect to the armed forces the whole thing leaves me cold considering that the UK government are continually cutting funds to military whilst wasting billions on Trident and forcing a pro Army agenda down our throats
That isn't a slight at the armed forces. I wouldn't do there job. Hate the game not the players and all that

PS The Shed, dont think what you said is all that controversial in this day and age, know a lot of people even over here with the same opinion. I suppose from my perspective, I wish it was more controversial.

There aren't enough dissenting voices. We are force fed a diet of monarchy and all that shite from the government and media. Remembrance weekend and Remembrance Day has been turned into a circus IMO. Folk driving about with poppies on cars, Albums by soldiers wives etc
That said if Dundee want to let veterans in for zilch then fair enough.

It may be called a volunteer army, but it isn't one.

It really is. Much in the same way there are volunteer firemen. A volunteer is not always somebody doing something for free. An Involuntary Army would still get paid... youd just have no choice over it.

Therefore everyone no matter what job they have is a volunteer in it?
Nothing against folk who want to have these professions, just don't see why we're meant to bow down at their feet all the time.

I think the distinction is that if we dont take a job with a private company, they cant force us to work for them and the company just lives with it. Military personnel are an essential part of any government... if people dont take those positions... they get filled one way or another.

Any person who has the endevour to go out and do a steady job no matter how small and insignificant they might perceive it to be, will be important to someone.
That should be applauded, I can see both sides of the discussion, no one job should be lauded over another, I don't see my job to be any superior than the school crossing person for example. Or the armed forces to be any superior to our teachers etc. It's the fact that we are actually getting up from our backsides and doing something that maybe a lot of people actually don't like doing just to provide for their family.
That should be celebrated, not just easy PR scoring.
imo.

Well, it is by no means an army of conscripts, is it? The lads aren't forced to join. They do so voluntarily!
