Paul Dixon

Opinions on him since he re-signed?

Gotta be honest i've been very dissapointed. No goals,no assists, and looks for me shaky in defence. He got an absolute roasting today in the 1st half and i thought he was looking a certainty to be sent off tbh.

Hate saying this as i was a huge fan first time round.Fuck knows whats happened to him but he seems to have went the way of Goodwillie.A shadow of the 2010/11 version.

His effort at goal today when played in by Erskine in the box and a direct shot at goal....dearie me.

Re: Paul Dixon

The other problem is he has no competition.

Can play shite week in week out and will only be replaced if he gets injured...by Sean Dillon.

I'm not saying Townsend was Roberto Carlos but i think he was very prematurely binned considering we have no real options in this position.

Re: Paul Dixon

He's been tragic.

Re: Paul Dixon

He gave up twice today in the final 10minutes.
Literally stopped running.

Unforgivable.

Re: Paul Dixon

I feel for him in this spell as before he had Daly to aim his crosses to and Conway to overlap, now he has no one to overlap and no one to hit crosses to.

A big problem (no actually THE problem) with United now is the formation, I'm sure a 4-4-2 could possibly see a return to the old Dixon with two men in the box and a winger playing in front of him.

Jackie must go.

Re: Paul Dixon

He's been very poor, you can make allowances end of last seasonbut expected him to hit ground running this season.

Re: Paul Dixon

His best spells for us were in 2008-09 when Danny Grainger was still here and 2011-12 when Barry Douglas was here. Why we never went for the boy Holt that went to the Fun is beyond me.

Too much commotion

Re: Paul Dixon

agree the formation and type of striker we have now aren't helping him, also very minor point but he did provide the assist for first goal against motherwell

Re: Paul Dixon

I must admit that I agree with Tek and have also not slated him until now but he is nowhere near the standard he was before.

Really hoped a full pre season would crank him up a few gears.....

Re: Paul Dixon

Tbh I think he always got it easy at Tannadice. I don't think Barry Douglas or Connor Townsend were any worse than him and he (Dixon) is nowhere near the player Andy Robertson was.

Re: Paul Dixon

Genuinely believe the way we play gives him and McGowan no chance down the flanks, total lack of width means they rarely find that space when overlapping.

Also as stated by others, one up front means targets to aim at in the box are very limited. Plus none of our strikers are exactly aerial threats.

He's not been great, but he's also not been helped out much by our brutally boring formation.

Re: Paul Dixon

Take everybody's point about there being no Conway to team up with and no Jon Daly or Johnny Russell to cross too.

But that doesn't excuse the fact he can't hit the target fae about eight yards out or looks to be blowing out his arse in games.

It frustrates me greatly that boys can get the jersey week in week out regardless of their form. And all because we have a Manager who has a ludicrously imbalanced squad.

Re: Paul Dixon

I'm sure we'd see a different Paul Dixon under an averagely competent management team.

Not to hijack the thread, but does anyone know why John Rankin wasn't involved yesterday? I'm assuming a late injury, but just wondered.

Re: Paul Dixon

Dixon worried me last season and what I've seen this season he's still worrying me. Also very quick to have a pop at fans.

Re: Paul Dixon

We as a club inc. supporters really have to get over this fixation of bringing back past players it never works IMO we would have been better sticking with Townsend and bringing him on I liked him could put in a tackle , liked to get forward and was quick for instance instead of spending bringing in muirhead that kind of money might have tempted hull to transfer him to us

Re: Paul Dixon

Townsend wasn't the answer or even close to it.

Dixons last season before he went south, he was superb.  How he's playing just now is exactly the level he was before that one great season.  He isn't the young boy he was then either to get up and down so much.

Players leaving us seems to make them a lot better than they really were in the minds of supporters.

Re: Paul Dixon

He's not been great, but as has been said the formation is no help to him. His best seasons were always with someone in front of him allowing him to overlap, split the opposition right hand side. But we have no width and no pace, so he rarely has a ball to run onto. Has he actually been played in at the by-line yet since he came back? I doubt it.

Re: Paul Dixon

Few players regarded as great players hold the form that created their stature for anything more than a year to 3 years of their career. That is normal.
Won't be surprised if Dixon has another great season in future but rekon it would be brought about by a change in circumstances whether surrounding players, tactics or management.
Someone else mentioned his best form was charging up the wing with better support and better/different style targets to cross to. I think they had a good point there.
We look lost going forward these days. When we brake up the park some are just going through the motions of supporting attack.

One of the few times we've seen him put a decent ball into the box, agree with others that his form has not been great but we're not playing to his strengths.

Needs to be allowed to push forward more often imo.

Re: Paul Dixon

Clutching at straws here Lads giving him an 'assist' at Motherwell.

Hacked a cross intae the box and their Defender made an absolute cunt of it.

He's getting cut some major slack from our fans at the mo because we remember how good he once was.Meanwhile 18 year old Souttar still gets ripped in some quarters everytime he has a poor game.

Re: Paul Dixon

Would disagree with your Souttar comments mate, I feel the boy gets off very lightly, I haven't heard much critism at all.

Re: Paul Dixon

Is Souttar carrying an extra bit of weight? Hard to tell on tv. Muirhead is, more chins than Jabba.

It's not where you're from it's where you're at.
