Thought I'd start a wee thread for discussion of some holiday destinations. Me and the missus have not had a proper holiday for a few years, and we are thinking about doing a fly/drive in the USA next year.
Anybody done this kind of holiday before?

My folks have done it by train. New York, Boston, Philly and DC. They loved it. It was their retirement holiday which I imagine made it better. Pretty sure Fooky has done a fair but driving in USA. He's the man to ask

I love driving in America. All depends on what interests you mate? The most obvious is Route 66 which I have never done in its entirety, but I've done parts of it doing other things. The original R66 is now superseded by modern freeways. Here's a few of what I have done:
Phoenix - Grand Canyon - Las Vegas - LA and up the old coast road to San Fransisco
Buffalo through New York State to New York City
Throughout Florida from Miami to the Keys to Orlando
San Diego - LA - Las Vegas - Fresno - San Fransisco
Charleston area South Carolina
Charleston to Orlando via hilton Head, Savannah, Jacksonville, Saint Augustine etc
Charlotte into the North Carolina mountains
I'm in the U.S. at least once a year and have a U.S. Sat Nav (essential) and two U.S. Cell phones (also essential IMO). When pals of mine go to the States they borrow this and that is a further saving and means you do not come home to a mobile bill from hell which once happened to me with a Blackberry that had roaming on even though I did not use it!
Driving is as cheap as chips compared to here. I use rentalcars.com and have done for as long as I remember as they are simple to deal with.
If you are doing a one way trip ie your rental car ends of hundreds/thousands of miles from where you rented it there could be a hefty premium involved unless you get lucky with a repositioning. Hopefully that's a start for you, but feel free to quiz away....

One more thing. Be wary of FlyDrive as you could end up with a tiny car and nowhere for luggage!

Cheers mate, loads of good info!
We were thinking about a drive around the west coast. I know it would be less hassle to just buy something as a package, but I guess if we did it all ourselves we'd save quite a bit of cash?
