On their day or overall who's the better player?

GMS. while McFadden was decent, he was a little overrated IMO.

McFadden

On their day I would go for GMS. But overall I would go for McFadden who has done it for the national team and at a high level in England.
Would have to see if GMS can step up and produce for Scotland and how he handles and performs down in England to judge him against McFadden overall.

Now that GMS has confirmed he's leaving, could McFadden fill his boots before someone else gets the best out him or can McFadden not play a similar if not better role?

for the tricks GMS but end product easily mcfadden
one's scored winners in paris and v holland and the Ukraine...the other has done well in the SPL

No, son of Paddy's getting a pair of insoles and some cotton wool tae fill those bates.

McFadden is probably the most overrated Scotland player since Paul McStay, a goalkeeping error in Paris and a deflection to beat the keeper v Holland and that's about it.
Decent for Well the first time around and died on his arse everywhere else, total fanny dancer who's past it, he's done fuck all since about, ages.
GMS might never be eclipse Mcfadden's achievements = benchwarmer in the EPL, or have a French goalie chuck one in, but he's the most exciting player to grace Tannadice since the days of Ralphie and Bannon.

McFadden tore up the SPL before he departed Motherwell,at the age of 20/21,don't forget.Scoring against both the Old Firm regulary. He also done well for Everton (1st time round) and was Scotland's talisman for a good 5/6 years.
I love GMS but there's still not enough end product and a fair few games where he's pretty anonymous.WHEN he is on his game he's an absolute joy to watch and makes Utd tick.At our level he's about as good a player as Utd can hope to have tbh.
But Mcfadden (was) the better player imo. That he's on the scrapheap, for whatever reason,at the age of 30 is a great shame for himself and Scotland.

Would largely have to agree with that at present. Gary still has plenty time.

McFadden by a mile, injuries cost him from an early age.
GMS has time on his side though, if he makes the correct move next summer (or if he stays with us)
Online!
career wise mcfadden by a fkn million miles as he has proved it at international level and epl level gms has been fantastic in games against pub teams like killie etc but against only decent team in scotland celtic he has done nothing of note in any game against them

Fuck me, it's like a Chic Young Faddy chugfest in here.
He was a very decent player at Well, where he had a very good goals to games ratio, then he moved and has never got near the level of hype surrounding him.
74 career goals, 15 for Scotland, 3 of them in games that weren't in friendlies or against pub teams, one which was a goalie error (France) the other a deflection out the keepers path (Netherlands)
GMS has a long way to go to even get legendary status at United, but the way in which McFadden is revered and remembered is totally baffling imho.

15 goals for Scotland.
Kenny Dal and The Lawman are oor joint top scorers by a bit on 30 each. And that was in very good teams.
I think you're being quite dismissive of how good Mcfadden was for Scotland, bearing in mind.
1.He isn't an out an out forward
2.He played in some pish Scotland sides.
GMS has a helluva lot to do this season to even get back to where he was 2 years ago and break into the Scotland SQUAD.

I still maintain that GMS has not been the same player since he got a knee operation a couple of seasons ago (after the Moscow game in 2012). He's lost a yard of pace that he used to have. He's still got the skill and is still fairly pacy but he used to be able to take a full back on then have a wee extra burst of speed that meant he he could hit the byline a get a good cross in. It was what set him apart from other wingers that he had an end product to go with all the skills and tricks. I just don't really see it now as much and more often or not he beats the full back but is not quick enough to get a good cross in before the defender cuts it out/gets something on it.
