Walked through (the shops bit) today for the first time in about a year -jesus christ what a joke , WH Smith shut down , next at the wellgate is pound shop and there are more boarded up shops than ones open.

this toon is fucked.

Five Guys Burgers is opening in the old WH Smith unit.

Which is a great addition. Only problem is that it's in a shopping centre that closes just about the time that everybody's away to have their tea.

Having two shopping centres at either end of the city centre that lock their doors at 6pm has killed the town.

Are they not going to be doing up the wellgate similar to union square in aberdeen with a cinema and a few differant food chains?

The centre is a shambles has been ruined with pond life junkie bastards and polis do fuck all to them

The city centre is pretty grim but tbh most city centres are grim. If you walk about during the day the amount of gadgies wandering about is scary.

Pretty soon all that will be there will be coffee shops, pawn type shops and bookies

Tell you what though, when they finish the waterfront bit it will be nice. Just a pity the biomass plant was shelved. That would have brought real jobs to the city. The V&A will be good but it'll basically provide low paid jobs. Part time work for students. City needs real jobs. When that happens the toon centre would get better as more folk would have more money to spend. As it is you can barely walk about the toon without at least tripping over 1 fat cunt who can't work on their mobility scooter.

Yet funnily enough you see fucking loads of them parked outside boozers everyday

When the lot is all finished it will look good waterfront to the wellgate etc

Yeah the waterfront thing -with a dwindling population and people with less money to spend -most of those new buildings will lie empty.

Or conversely the town centre will move closer to the river and the rest of the town centre (the current centre) will truly be deserted.

Don't know about new buildings tbh but knocking down the swimming, the casino, Tayside House, the Hilton and the casino is a great move. The fact that you'll be able to see the river from the back of the Caird Hall is a great thing. Totally reconnecting the town centre with the river.

Don't think they're building many new buildings down there

Pedestrianising the city centre has contributed a lot to the "downfall" of the place. A good idea in principle but has made it feel like a ghost town in places.

The biggest thing that lets the toon centre down is that it basically shuts at 6. Go anywhere abroad and the city centres are buzzing all night.

Aye that's true, even here in Edinburgh you walk through the city centre at night and it's usually still really busy.

Think we have to remember that Dundee is a small place though, and probably doesn'treally have the size of population to create an atmosphere like that.

Most of the shops in town are probably never busy before 11am, they could probably do with opening around 10am and staying open later.

I reckon with the V&A opening that there will be more tourists coming to the city and that's what the council will be banking on too, whether it pans out that way or not we will need to wait and see. Look at it this way it could be a shite sight worse we could be living in a city like Aberdeen, with absolutely fuck all going for it.
The thing that worries me more than the waterfront/City centre is the lack of any real jobs over the next 10 years or so before the benefits are felt from the upgrading.
