Going abroad for Pre-Season

I've always wondered why this is necessary. Not just talking about Utd (most top flight teams).

Must cost a fortune.

Re: Going abroad for Pre-Season

Would imagine it does cost a fair wack but they will be working on team building without wife's, kids etc and living in each others pockets for a period of time, the hotter conditions will help with cardio training and conditioning. It's also a chance to play some games against teams that aren't Forfar, Montrose, Brechin etc etc

Re: Going abroad for Pre-Season

100% agree.

Suppose it's different for teams like Man Utd who, globally, are massive, so it makes sense to maximise earning potential and appease sponsors etc.

Teams like Utd would be as well going to England rather than spend fortunes going abroad. It would serve the same purpose.

Why not go two hours down the East Coast and stay in Tyneside for a week then and play Newcastle, Sunderland or Boro.

Thousands saved on flights.

Re: Going abroad for Pre-Season

Agree, money the Club shouldn't be spending in the current climate IMO.  Running at a substantial operating loss and spending crazy cash on this, as others have said going down south could provide a similar exercise at fraction of the cost.

Re: Going abroad for Pre-Season

I heard that last season's trip cost over 60 grand and this season its down to 40 odd grand, probably less this season as the squad has been decimated. As David Essex once sang,"Every clouds got a silver lining."

I believe it's cost about £22k this season.  Much less than last year but still a fair whack.  Rumours are its only abroad as Sheddie wanted a holiday......!!! 😳

Re: Going abroad for Pre-Season

Good for team spirit. A wee bit of time together, great facilities, good weather virtually guaranteed.

Lighten up boys!

I'm not bothered about the weather tbh.

It's not a holiday they're on.

Re: Going abroad for Pre-Season

The warm weather means that muscles are more pliable and therefore the risk of strains and muscle tears is reduced. The cold weather can tighten muscles resulting in injury if athletes don’t do a proper warm up. Of course training in the warm does not mean that you can skip the warm up as it is still necessary but the length of it can be reduced.

The sun is a natural way of getting a daily dose of vitamin D. Some research has suggested that a lack of vitamin D can result in sports related muscle injuries. Other research has suggested that the vitamin actually improves reaction time, muscle strength, speed and endurance. Apparently in the 1950s and 80s German and Russian athletes used sunlamps to stimulate vitamin D production to increase performance and reduce injuries!

As mentioned before many of the benefits are psychological. It is often said that a change is as good as a break and a warm weather training break can be a great motivator, help renew athletes focus and gives athletes the chance to train and recover without other daily distractions.

Knowledge is the bomb

Re: Going abroad for Pre-Season

Weren't meant to be going abroad at all. Ds said at the meeting that it was costing toocmuch and would be better using St Andrews.

Re: Going abroad for Pre-Season

Think the problem might be that teams from England will still be running off a summer of booze and kebabs so unless we want a tour of Scotland's smaller towns and villages it's Johnny Foreigner or nothing.

And let's be honest not much chance of them wanting to come to the land that summer forgot....

Re: Going abroad for Pre-Season

Re: Going abroad for Pre-Season

Booked in advance, flights probably about 200 note...30 bodies - 6 grand extra over staying in England
Top sports facilities in the Netherlands and probably cost less then an equivalent in the UK
An opportunity to play against 3 teams in the top 10 of a strong league
No seeing the problem...sorry

This, tbh. Rather that than paying lower league British clubs.

Aye cos that's what was being suggested

Interesting that those who defend the club the most about lack of signings because money's tight are the same one's who don't seem bothered that we're spending a fortune going abroad.

Plenty of teams we could have played in this country.

Pretty sure Celtic and St. Johnstone just played Real Sociedad.

Re: Going abroad for Pre-Season

If there was ever a sign that our support spends far too much time and energy worrying about the wrong things, it's moaning about the cost of a pre-season training camp.

Folk are entitled to have opinions, if you don't like it, don't feel the need to read/comment.  Simple really.

Fair enough. But by the same token, if you don't want your opinion challenged, don't stick it up on a public messageboard.
