Land ownership in Scotland

Was listening to a debate on Jeremy Vine on Radio 2 today and it said that 432 people own over 50% of land in Scotland.  That is mind boggling eh?

Re: Land ownership in Scotland

LOL you were my hot favourite for replying first Citizen Hunted!

If you think about it logically though and strip it back to the beginning.  How did anyone come to own land in the first place?

It would have been via land grab; or by violence/war?

Re: Land ownership in Scotland

They've got it by theft. Wonder what %age is owned by the Windsors. Must be a fair amount. Dan (please don't leave us Scotland) Snow's father in law, the Duke of Westminster, owns a large amount as well.

Serious land reform is needed IMO

Basically, it's modern day feudalism.

It's a disgrace that the Lab/Libdem and SNP Scottish governments since 1999 haven't tackled the subject until now.

If I was in charge it'd be the 1st thing I'd do after I'd abolished the charitable status to independent schools

I was watching it wondering if you were too, what you would make of it?

Appalling behaviour taking advantage of a woman passing intestate like that.

Re: Land ownership in Scotland

Throw the fact that 1 in 6 family's in Scotland are classed as being in poverty too doesn't help when you hear that most of these landowners/grabbers get more tax breaks than most others.

That boy that was making nature reserves out of old Scottish opencast coal mines owns the largest amount of land in Scotland. It was on the news last week.  Professor Griggs is his name. See link above.

First thing is you educate law abiding and tax paying citizens not to give them the oxygen of work.  The Local Authority needs to be pro active and keep its citizens informed of vehicles being used and their bogus company names and "local" phone numbers.  The Internet and Social Media is the way to do this.  And before anyone says "Human Rights", they need to be earned IMO, so feck 'em!

Then the Local Authority "make" the Travellers (Criminals) reside at a designated site.  You do that by applying the laws of the land to them.  If you or I repeatedly broke the law there would be a consequence.  The Common Law of Scotland allows the Police to arrest offenders who fail to desist and/or who repeatedly break the law.  So you do that until they tow the line.  Move them on, stop and check the road worthiness of their vehicles, use mobile CCTV on them etc.  The minute they set up an illegal camp, so called "Intelligence Led Policing" should kick in with all of the above, but basically Local Authorities and Police Scotland  it and do the square root of feck all.  But it's mine and your grannies that these chunts take advantage of and rip off.  It's easier for the Polis to target law abiding citizens in their cars or issue fixed pens to a futba fan in the street with a can of beer though, that keeps the stats up

Re: Land ownership in Scotland

Do not expect Police Scotland to do anything about. Remember in the early 80s word got round that there was a squad of gypos in the Admiral stormed the place and gave them a good kicking , they left there "site" where the current Mcalpine Fire station is within the hour. Thats what I was thinking.

So are you suggesting that people need to organise themselves and go to the sites that the travellers are in and give them a right good kicking?

They had better hope that this boy's not staying with the travellers then.

My teenage daughter was less than appreciative last week.
Next day she wanted a lift so I picked her up and on the way home I reflected on the previous attitude and told her I was dropping her off at the gypsie site.

Should have seen her face when I drove into their site past a smashed up caravan with a Police investigation sign on the broken windows.

Re: Land ownership in Scotland

What I would really like is for our elected representatives to do thier jobs and speak up for thier constituents, you will struggle to find anybody who agrees with the Gypsies approach to law abiding behaviour, However it silence from councillors Msps ,Mps the lot of them.  Dont get me started on the Menzieshill High (R.I.P.) debacle, not a word said against the closure.

Re: Land ownership in Scotland

The law as regards travellers rights makes the process of moving them on quite a difficult and costly one each time. I'm pretty sure it outlaws folk just rolling up and giving them a kicking. However it is difficult because they are a pain in the arse and as well as all the mess which is left behind (deliberately to wind people up?) it is also a fact that the crime rate (burglaries such as from sheds, garages and farm outbuildings) do significantly rise in areas where they pitch up.

Re: Land ownership in Scotland

It cost the council roughly £50,000 a year to clean up thier discarded shitty nappies gas canisters and bits of tarmac. Thieir taking the piss cause they know nobody has the guts or political will to do anything about it
