from official site...Dundee United have offered contract extensions to top scorer Nadir Ciftci and rising star John Souttar. Both players have a year remaining on existing contracts and the Club is keen to secure their service for the longer term.23-year old Ciftci has scored 31 goals in 81 appearances for United attracting the interest of the Turkish U21 international team having played at international youth level previously. 18-year old Souttar is a product of the highly successful Dundee United youth academy system and is a current Scotland U19 internationalist and has played 51 time for the Club.A Club spokesperson said, “Both players have proved their worth to the team and the Club as a whole and merit the extension offer. We believe that Dundee United remains the best club for both players to develop and as such have made enhanced longer term offers to the players that reflect their value to Dundee United.”

ciftci publicly stated the other week that he was happy to stay at Dundee United so lets see how this pans out.. He has a year left on his deal just now.

That's strange I thought the club only do their business behind close doors and make announcements when their business is concluded

Call me cynical but I'd imagine they are doing this so that if they turn the deals down the club can turn round and say, "we had to sell"

I can see Souttar signing on but Ciftci is offski in the summer I think.

I think there will be a lot of comings and goings in the summer

The club are very clever with words...They insinuate one thing but leave get out clauses.
Nadir is happy in dundee - whereas all it says is he will see out his contract if he has to - doesn't say he will extend.
United have offered deals - not to say they will be accepted - just that they've got a finger out.
2 things that bug me (in general)
1)- why can we never sign our talent up on long term contracts, when aberdeen and dundee both can
2)why leave a players contract until the last year to try to extend? Had we offered souttar a deal at the start of the season,we'd have a better chance of him staying. Turned down Sunderland once - can't see him turning down the same level of team again

1. We have done that to most of the young talent we've had tbf to the club. Ciftci and Soutar both extended last season IIRC. GMS was given an extension as were Gauld, Robertson and Armstrong. All the players we've made dough from have extended beyond their original deals.
Sometimes players are happy to see out their deals. If we hadnt extended Ciftci's he'd be leaving in June for zilch so I dont think that is a criticism you can make of club. Soutar should have been offered a deal sooner though.
Tbh I think both would be mental to sign extensions.

I wouldn't fussed if Ciftci left tbh. I'm fed up watching the few decent moves we put together these days break down because he tries a daft flick or world cup pass when a simple through ball is on.

Hey hunted.
Dundee keeper hits the heights of Scotland call ups and signs a 3 year deal, despite interest from celtic
Ryan jack does the same and signs a 3 year deal
Mark reynolds loaned out to dons and signs a 4 1/2 year deal
Ciftci has a good season and a 1 year extension
It's not quite the same. We are always desperate to sell players. Constant turnover of staff helps nobody. Others manage to keep their best players - why can't we, just occasionally. ..
Aw well as long as we've still got sean

Maybe a one year deal was all Ciftci was willing to sign. Soutar extended until May 2016 in Nov 2013. You can't force players to extend.
If I was advising either the 2 of them I'd be wary of advising them to sign on seeing as contract info on players seems to find its way on many different United forums.
The fact that we've offered numerous players extensions and taken in millions for players in past 5 years kind of suggests we are doing ok regarding giving players new deals IMO. Not many other clubs have made as much as us. The nature of futba now also means that sometimes players leave at the end of their contracts IMO

The contracts offered might be well considered before they are on the table.
We've sold the attraction to sign for United as a platform/springboard to bigger and better things. Don't think Ciftci would sign longterm but would be a wee bit disappointed if Soapy or other young anes wouldn't.
You can also tie yerself into paying good wages for longterm injuries and off form players.

Never a good sign when the club are announcing they've offered contracts IMO. Suggests to me they're not signing them, hopefully wrong on Souttar, couldn't really care either way with Ciftci TBH.

That's for bringing in gems from other clubs.
Existing players, meantime, will be left on tenterhooks then possibly given an offer of extending eventually (see Dillo interview on Zone for example).
Freedom of contract has led to a whole lot of subterfuge, brinksmanship and downright bullshit, but it's a two way street.
I reckon the majority of present players, barring agents, would probably prefer a JYM 10yr contract on a living wage with bonuses.

Also i see in his latest statement when he mentions the exententions to these 2 there is nothing mentioned about Butcher..
is that a sign he is away?

Statement released the same day as the Aussie bid has broken and the Chairman's statement.
Co-incidence?

The cynic in me says the fact the club have announced they've offered them deals as opposed to signing deals means they're not re-signing......
'we done the best we can but they've decided to move on....

Theyre just trying to deflect the heat away from ST and JM.
