Time flies by. We were breathtaking two games after that. Pumped Motherwell with ten men then were sensational at Easter Road the following Wednesday.

Re: On This Day

Some good attendances looking back too, obviously the games back in 87 were a joy to be part of (the sways were great) but even 10yrs on we were getting very decent crowds albeit all seated and no sways but sore shins became the new fashion

Hear their shout, hear their roar
They've probably had a barrel of ale and much, much more
Hooray, hooray, hooray, yeah
Over the hill went the swords of a thousand men

16 years ago today - 17th April 1999

Aberdeen 0 Dundee United 4 (Dodds,Joe Miller,Olofsson,Dodds)

One of our best ever displays at Pittodrie.Joe Miller terrorised them that day,as did Olofsson and Doddsy.

Here's hoping it can possibly be a wee omen for tomorrow.

Re: On This Day

I normally have a good memory for games from the past.

But I must confess I can't remember this game either. Possibly because it was a midweek encounter.

Re: On This Day

The goal times are surely wrong for that match. I mind a cheating chunt of a referee giving them everything, and them in the lead up until quite late in the match. I'll try to check somewhere.

What a fucking quality squad of players we had back then. The younger ones there would wipe the floor with our so called talented youngsters today.

Too much commotion

You're spot on, I mind it well.

Gave them a dodgy penalty.

Jackson got a late penalty for us to equalise then Big Dunc scored the winner.

Think McCoist got sent off at full time.

I can. Your mum picked us up at the Paulies and gave me a lift, the wee bit along the road.

Remember saying something like 'after tonight i'm a United supporter for life-that was magic' when i got in the car.

Never forget me.

Oh, what came of the things we once believed?

Remember that game clear as day.  Bedlam in The Shed when Dunc scored.  Fuck I miss standing in The Shed.

Can't mind McCoist getting sent off, he'd been given everything in the match as per. A dodgy penalty and an offside goal put them 2-1 up.

Re: On This Day

On this day 27 years ago (Wow) 17th December 1988 a very excited 8 year old in East Kilbride was jumping about his living room listening to this on the wireless.

Dundee Utd 2 (Paatelainen pen 65,Bailey o.g 85) Celtic 0
League - Premier Division
Saturday, December 17th, 1988, 3:00 PM at Tannadice Park
Attendance: 18,745
Referee: Mike McGinley (Clydebank)

^^^^

This was in a good run of form and this win seen us go 10 games undefeated. This was also Celtic's 3rd visit to Tannadice that season already...and their 3rd defeat!! Infact we hadn't even conceded a goal to them in any of the 3 games (changed days indeed eh?).

Re: On This Day

And also 'On This Day' 15 years ago (again fucking Wow) 17th December 2000

Dundee Utd 1 (Lilley 32) Rangers (Reyna 18)

League - SPL
Sunday, December 17th, 2000, 6:05 PM at Tannadice Park
Attendance: 10,750
Referee: John Rowbotham

What was significant about this game is that it was imo the match that was the catalyst for our 'Great Escape' of season 2000/01.

Until that point we had by and large looked a certainty to drop like a stone into Division 1.We didn't even register our first win till late into November v Dunfermline (3-2),but it was this performance and battling draw against a Rangers side with no fewer than 11 Internationalists in the starting XI that really lit the touch paper on our season and sparked our revival.Infact after this game we were easily the 3rd best team in the country for the remainder of the season (we had to be).

Derek Lilley scored a brilliant opportunistic half-volley on his debut.Fine player, liked him a lot.

Re: On This Day

I thought Derek Lilley was going to go on and have a great career, never really panned out for him.  Who did we buy in from?  I remember the old man telling me about him prior to him signing and that he was going to be a PLAYER.

Going by his Linkedin profile he's a business manager for a pharmaceutical company in Glasgow.

We signed him from Leeds Utd if i remeber rightly.

Can't remember now if it was a freezer or if there was a nominal fee to pay.I do know he played a huge part in keeping that side in the Premier.

Re: On This Day

Did we not used to sing Derek lilleys name to the tune of the great escape that season?
Very apt.
I remember he also scored a screamer against rangers at Ibrox when we beat them 2-0 that season.

Me and my mate were in the broomloan stand as we were through buying a car and decided to go at the last minute. Touts only sold tickets for the him end obviously. We kept our pusses shut all the way back to the adds car park before celebrating!

Re: On This Day

I could have sworn we bought Derek Lilley from Leeds for £100,000. But we didn't, seems it was Oxford United.

Re: On This Day

Did lilley not go to Leeds from Morton for £100k?
