For this weeks artist of the week I put forward – The Stranglers
A difficult thing to pick out one of your favourite bands/artist but I will go with the Stranglers as they were one of my first favourites and the songs all have good memories attached to them.
Formed in 1974 and originally called The Guildford Stranglers, the founding members came from drastically varied backgrounds and were Jet Black (drums), JJ Burnel (bass/vocals), Hans Warmling (Keyboard/Guitar) and Hugh Cornwell (Guitar/Vocals). The Guildford Stranglers were soon to be renamed The Stranglers and Hans Warmling was replaced by Dave Greenfield which became the bands best known line-up.
Leading man Hugh Cornwell left the band in 1990, however the remaining members continued the band and have recruited various musicians over the years to fill the void left by Cornwell. Cornwell will unlikely ever re-join The Stranglers and it is a sad thing not to see one of your favourite bands as they were best known.
A distinctive sound, often misinterpreted and never ones to shy away from controversy, The Stranglers are a hugely underrated British band and this week’s Artist of the Week.

A fine band.
Jean-Jacques Burnel a helluva bass player and Hugh Cornwall has always been an interesting figurehead.

Saw The Stranglers in Doaks' in Falkirk in '77: chewing gum was banned at the venue, but I seem to remember the band had a big chewing gum cannon which fired gum into the audience. Unsure if time has corrupted my memory on this, and it's doubtful if anyone here could confirm or deny!
Always been a big favourite of mine, saw them several times plus Cornwell solo. My leather jacket had a wee white rat painted on the pocket.

Always felt The Stranglers were a bit underrated.
Remembering hearing this one for the first time. Even as a young 6/7 year old I distictly remember the lyrics being quite funny.

Good story Pat. It does sound like something they would do. They never struck me as a band who liked to be told what to do or bow to convention, even if it was to their own detriment.
Saw them in early 00's in Glasgow when Paul Roberts had taken on the singing duties. Lots of older skinheads types in attendance and there was a bit of an atmosphere. Overall it was a bit of a crazy gig, the band walked off stage at one point but did return to finish their set.

The video of Golden Brown has been taken down. One of my favourites, always thought the Radio Cairo microphone would be something cool to get your hands on.
