I think he’s doing the bare minimum that would be accepted by a similarly competent manager in his position.
Before a ball was kicked this season I said on another forum (P&B) that the bare minimum for an acceptable season is 3rd and both semi-finals, given that we’ve lost two of our most influential players then I could say that he’s about breaking even.
Bearing in mind he’s the longest serving manager in the league.
He’s under no pressure from the board.
He’s spent the second most cash of any manager in Scotland.
We have the 3rd highest budget by some distance in the league.
Everyone outside of Aberdeen and Celtic have lost key players this season, outside Motherwell everyone else has adapted and cut their cloth accordingly. I think he’s assembled a very poor depth of squad:
We have FIVE goalkeepers on our books, according to the manger none are ready to push Rado for a start.
We have one left back. With Dillon as cover.
We have one right back. With the same Dillon as cover.
We have four centre halves including Dillon, thank god Fojut has rarely been injured or we could have been looking at Dillon starting in left back, right back and centre half in the same game!
In centre midfield we have bodies, I’m not sure they are good enough but we have the numbers.
Behind the strikers again we have bodies, I think some are good enough but he prefers those who aren’t.
Up front Anier and Bilate have been awful cover for Ciftci. It also looks like we’ll start next season Anier, Murray and Muirhead as our strikers.
If we don’t finish top 6 he has to be sacked, that’s unacceptable for a club our size and budget to finish out with the top six in the poorest top flight in a generation.
Cups are a lottery of course and chances are when you draw Celtic you’ll lose nine times out of ten, so seeing as they knocked us out of both there’s very little we can do with that.

Pretty Much Agree with Andy that his reign so far has been average at best and poor at worst.
First season done decent by getting top 6 to keep the Bank from the door and also a bit unfortunate in the semi v Celtic with a very inspiring although defensively flawed performance.
Second season had assembled a squad capable of winning something but made a total chunt of it in matches against very average Inverness and St Johnstone Teams.....also failed to qualify for Europe in a season when Hearts and Hibs were relegated and Huns were again off the radar.....3rd should have been par.
This season again come up short with a totally insipid Final performance , although to be honset we could have been out in either of the previous rounds against Dundee , Hibs and Sheep...Scottish Cup again a slight dissapointment that we never really went for it against Celtic in either of the games...appreciate we were down to 9 men at Tannadice but the first half we seemed happy just to be on the same pitch as them without asking questions.....League Wise with the exception of the odd performance we have been average and again look like finishing below Par which is 3rd place.
What really worries me at the moment though is we have went backwards from pretty much Xmas 2013 and have not replaced the quality that has went with anything like what we had....some of the signings this season especially have been brutal.
I so want JMac to succeed and get some fire in his belly....just not sure if he has got it though.

Motherwellarab made a good point to me today.
Last season Jackie had players like Goodie,Gomis,Gauld,Robertson,Armstrong,GMS and Ciftci in his arsenal but we finished 12 points behind a workmanlike Motherwell.
We also of course lost 4 times to St.Johnstone, including most painfully a Cup Final.
This season we are currently 7 points behind 3rd placed Caley in a league with no Hearts,Hibs and Rangers. And probably the poorest Motherwell team for 10 years.
So is Jackie actually underachieving?Or do you think he's doing a good job under trying circumstances?
Just interested in gauging opinion at this point in the season.
Can you add "very good job" to the poll for me, please"?

It easy to focus on his poor signings however McGowan fojut morris and Dixon will I believe will prove to be as goog a back 4 as a team with United's budget could expect

I like you Bugsy, but if you think he's doing a very good job..christ.

In a league without hertz, Hibs and Sevco it will be a failing if we didn't finish 3rd.

The BBC quotes him: " "We've got to be ready for it and forget about what happened in the last two games with Celtic."
Wrong attitude. We shouldn't forget them, but remember them and take steps to do better this time.

I liked you young man with your initial reasoned posts on mad but by christ you've gone bitter and twisted (wonder why?).
The very good job he's doing is on the training ground with innovative routines (awareness, yoga etc).
The very good job he's doing is embracing the excellent sport science facilities at St Andrews.
The very good job he's doing is personally monitoring every player in the squad and not depending on reports.
The very good job he's doing is man managing and developing a large squad (maybe too big? ).
The very good job he's doing is towing the party line of the club regarding recent departures to maintain harmony (although I personally would've let rip, ignoring the consequences).
The very good job he's doing is progressing the team despite crucial parts of it being removed season after season.
Still like you deep down.

Regardless of team decimation outwith his control?

Heh. What posts? I rarely go on MAD now. There's too many random zoomers.
I probably do come across as bitter. There's a few players that as much as I want to like them, I just Don't. I hope Jackie turns it around. I really do.
I can't see it though. Beating County may give us a huge lift though.

The topic's, is Jackie doing a good job and I'm thinking he is, you hope he is/will.
Would hope that's still the case after RC.
I can guarantee my bit.

Problem is all the stuff off the park means nothing if the results dont follow. At the minute they arent, but overall in his reign its been slightly better than par for me. He deserves the support and the chance to turn the current run round.
Still convinced he's very low on belief himself at the moment and thats the first thing he needs to sort out. You need to take him for a pint and instill that belief back in him bugsy.

Have to take umbrage with that a wee bit Bugs tbh.
Yes we sold 4 outstanding players but outwith Celtic,Jackie has spent by some distance the most money in Scotland in 14/15.
50k on Szromnik
150k (+add-on's) on Muirhead
204k on Telfer
50k on Murray
£454,000 spent this season in transfer fee's (plus their wages remember).
Fucking hell that would have paid the wages of a lot of freebies like Scott McDonald,Fraser Fyvie,Andy Driver,Danny Swanson etc etc.
He has imo built a squad that is very clearly imbalanced and binning Gomis,Townsend and Watson was also bizarre management imo.

See it as logic more than positivity, we've just had back to back cup finals and we'll be fighting for Europe - result for me with our present resources and earlier asset stripping.
The topic is an appraisal of Jackie and I am delighted with his work.

Fair enough, TEK, if you prefer those freebies, but don't forget the massive surplus income/asset realisation.
I personally believe our signings, except Szromnik, are very sensible investments with great potential (but we all know potential doesn't always materialise).
Would rather have Telfer than Jimmy, rather have McGowan than Watson and rather have Dickers (original version, yet to appear) than Townsend.

Underachieving.
Finishing 5th or 6th in this league with the squad we have would be piss poor.

When he first came he was tactically naive, problem is he still is.
Subbies today were baffling, how Erskine lasted 90 mins playing like that is mental.
Offline
Thankfully missed my first home game today going on Wednesday but if we get beat things are going to turn real ugly real fast for Jackie. Really really sad what is happening to our club at the moment three months ago all was rosey but now we're a rudderless boat

He's a dead man walking, condemned by his poor decisions. Of course, all managers eventually leave, but his depature is unavoidable and impending.
I think he's been hung out there by the chairman right enough, but I can't think of any point in Jackie's tenure that I've thought, "The manager got us the points there".
But who else could we get? Coming away from the match I felt an atmosphere of resignation, almost like we know change is coming, but we really cannot have an influence on the change.
It's a situation which we shouldn't be in, as we, the fans, pay a big chunk of the takings.

I'm interested to see what another manager could get out of our squad.
