Best Foreign/Subtitled Movies

I know subtitled movies might not be everyone's thing, but there is loads of great foreign/subtitled movies out there that deserve attention if you are in the need to watch a quaility film.

Here is a few that I would recommend....

City of God.
Released 2002. From Brazil.

The trailer doesnt do it justice. Check it out if you like Goodfellas.

Taxi.

Released 1998. From France.

They did an aweful American 'Remake' starring Jimmy Fallon and Queen Latifah. Check it out if you like the silliness of The Fast and The Furious.

The Raid: Redemption.

Released 2011. From Indonesia.

The director is Welsh but based in Indonesia, the sequel is good as well. Check it out if you like Die Hard, first half of the film is all guns and weapons. Also check it out if you like martial art movies, second half of the movie the bullets run out and they have to resort to 'Silat' martial art fighting.

Battle Royale.

Released 2000. From Japan.

One of my all time favourite films. Basically a school class of 42 kids get put in this game where they have 3 days to kill each other, the last one left alive wins. If that sounds familiar then you may have heard of the bastardised American version called The Hunger Games.

Check it out if you hated The Hunger Games, this is the same simple premise but without all the bullshit social commentary drama, and futuristic setting. Serioulsy can't recommend it enough.

What other foreign/subtitled movies are they that you like and can recommend?

Das Boot is brilliant! I got hold of the extended version that was used as a mini series and when I used to do the middle of the night bottle feeds with my first daughter I used to take her downstairs and watch it a bit at a time. 4 hours and 58 mins worth of Awesomeness!

The director Wolfgang Petersen also directed one of my favourite movies when I was a kid, The Neverending Story.

Also the U-boat was kept after filming and Steven Spielberg rented it for a scene in which some guy stowed away on it for a small movie he did called Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Taxi is fun Bob, but definitely check out Battle Royale if you can

Ya bastard, beat me to it (by 2 hours or so)! Best war film ever as well. Got the blu-ray extended film version and the full extended mini series version too. Mini series is yje best as it has the naration, totally cut out in the extended film version along with a few scenes which depict the absolute boredom.

Have to admit to liking this one. Quirkiness gets me, probably the French style to it.
