On This Day

20 years ago - 27th January 1995

Alex Cleland and Gary Bollan departed Tannadice for Rangers in a double deal mooted to be worth 750k.

This was of course in the days before internet, fitba forums and rolling 24 hour a day news.

Only learned of the deal the next morning at school when some gloating Hun smugly asked me what i thought of Rangers new signings.

'Who's your new signings'? said i.

I really don't think we would have got relegated if we'd kept them both.Cleland inparticular was a good, solid, full back.

Re: On This Day

Agreed.
Bollan would have also offered good cover when the suspensions decimated us in the last 3-4 games of the season.  It would have spared us the agony of seeing David Craig at left back in the last 3 games of the season  (another who could/should have been in the worst ever player comp).

Too much commotion

He was pretty bowfing.Though was kinda hung out to dry by Golac/Kirkwood,who rushed him into the team too early and then played him out of position because selling Bollan/Cleland left us short defensively.

Mabe a contender for inclusion for future 'Worst DUFC Player' Cups. But far fae the worst imo.

Re: On This Day

6 years Ago - 28th January 2009

Scottish League Cup Semi Final - Celtic 0 Dundee United 0 (Celtic win 11-10 on pens) Att:19,258

and

9 years Ago (WOW) 28th January 2006 -

Celtic 3 Dundee Utd 3 (Miller 82,Fernandez 40,86) Att:59,875

Bit of a false dawn for Brewster that yin.Still it was an exciting scoring draw at Parkhead instead of the usual raping.

Re: On This Day

Things that we could have done differently that I think would have avoid relegation in 1995:

1. Had Guido or Alan Main in goals instead of the Danish clown then O'Hanlon
2. Kept Cleland and Bolland
3. Not sacked Golac when we did
4. Had a bit of luck.  The spine of that team was Petric, Welsh, Bowman, McKinlay, Brewster. We had other teams that were much worse that stayed up with a bit of luck.

Re: On This Day

This could have the makings of a good thread me thinks. Nothing beats a blast from the past, just not too many of the nightmare ones though.

5. Signed Paul Lambert instead of Chris Myers the season before!

If I remember rightly after McSwegan scored he done the Van Hooijdonk cupping the ears to the fans celebration to really rub it in.

Jackie's 1st game in charge too of course.

Scoring after 16 seconds.

Not a bad start as Manager.
