Dundee United vs Celtic - Wednesday 17th December (8PM)

If ever there is a time to have a right go at Celtic it's now.

They looked a demoralised outfit earlier today at Hampden.

What XI and formation would you play?

Re: Dundee United vs Celtic - Wednesday 17th December (8PM)

There's six of us who go to games together. I'm the only one going on Wednesday. That speaks volumes.

It'll be the same team as Saturday I suspect other than the horror of Moeller up front instead of Watters who looked burst after an hour.

We should have a go at them. They are fucking awful. We won't. We'll play for a 0-0 and get pumped 3-0. I've never called for Goodwin's head but I'm getting close. Unless the midfield is addressed in January along with getting in someone who can coach the team how to build attacks through the midfield and dictate games then his arse should be out the door by January.

Too much commotion

Re: Dundee United vs Celtic - Wednesday 17th December (8PM)

This is a game we should do well in. The current team plays much better against so called bigger opposition and big crowds, and they don't come bigger than Celtic in this country. Celtic will dominate possession but leave big gaps as they always do, but they are vulnerable for once in a way they normally aren't. It's not dissimilar to the Rangers game a couple of weeks ago that we really should have won.

There will be the usual fatalism in our our support with people staying away. I know a couple of people who're choosing not to go. That's their choice but I hope the fans who do go get right behind the team from the start as Celtic will have most of the ball.

I expect Fatah and Sapsford to play like men possessed.

Team

Richards

Strain KK Graham Iovu Ferry

Sibbald  Stephenson

Fattah Sapford Dolcek

Re: Dundee United vs Celtic - Wednesday 17th December (8PM)

A few on social media saying they will raise their game and beat us very easily.

Frankly that should not be happening because they can only play the players they have and we should be able to raise our own game to match them.

Ineacho is out, Ralston took a sore face knock, could be out. Tierney may start but won't last 90. The worry is that just Maeda and Yang will be enough to cause us real problems.

But if we're able to get right at their defence both Hearts and St Mirren have shown it's fragile if harried and their keeper is starting to look like a player who knows his time is up.

We should be competitive and a result should be possible.
My worry is that if we're still without Camara we are lacking that break up play, drive and forward momentum from midfield.

Edit to add
Moller MUST NOT start with Sapsford. Play Sapsford in the middle with Fatah and Dolcek either side. If Moller starts you can be sure we will see Mellon ball style high punts up to him and we'll be giving Celtic an easy night. If Goodwin does this I will swing from being behind him to deciding he's not the man to take us forward.

Re: Dundee United vs Celtic - Wednesday 17th December (8PM)

I'm not sure what to expect. The game's got national if not worldwide interest. There will be a lot of eyes on it from afar but maybe not from the ground. I anticipate a 4-digit gate with a drop-off from both sets of supporters. It could well be a humdinger or conversely a damp squib. I'm looking forward to being there to see how it pans out. I just haven't a clue how it'll go. It had to be us didn't it?

Re: Dundee United vs Celtic - Wednesday 17th December (8PM)

Our last win against Celtic not far off 11 years ago.

Utd 2 (Ciftci , Armstrong) Celtic 1 (21/12/14)

What an utterly disgraceful statistic that is btw. Fucking hell.

Since our worst day ever as a club, the 0-9 defeat to Celtic that signalled the end of Jack Ross

We have played them a further six times. We haven't scored a goal in five of those match,

Celtic 4 Utd 2 (Nov 22)
Utd 0 Celtic 2 (Jan 23)
Utd 0 Celtic 0 (Dec 24)
Celtic 2 Utd 0 (Jan 25)
Celtic 3 Utd 0 (Feb 25)
Utd 0 Celtic 5 (Apr 25)

Only 4 of these games under Jim Goodwin, granted. But only 1 point gained out of 12 and NO GOALS SCORED out of the four games.

Handbrake off, Jim.

This is a big one tonight, we need this, you need this.

Re: Dundee United vs Celtic - Wednesday 17th December (8PM)

As shite as Celtic might be just now, every single player walks into our team, we could get a battling draw, sneak a win or just as easily lose 5-1.

I've bought and paid for my entry (season ticket) I'll decide whether I'm going once I see the line-up.

If we're set up to at least have a go, I may well take my seat, if we're set up to not have a go at clearly wounded and struggling animal, then I'm out.

And then even if I do go there's this....

Freezing, wet, 90 minutes of shite spouted from the away stands, 90 minutes of moaning shite spouted from the guys who don't get to speak in the house that sit around me, probably countless protests/interruptions and I'm not even considering the shite VAR will pull either.

I'm almost at the stage where I'd be happy to pencil in a 3-0 loss every time we face these cunts and save the hassle, and whilst that might sound defeatist, it's exactly the same energy I get from the whole club when we play them.

To quote Mark Renton......."It's a shite state of affairs to be in Tommy!"

"Don't F*cking ever offer me that again!"

Was actually thinking the same myself. Emphasised more this evening after watching that turgid shite at the weekend, if we won't have a go at Motherwell then I've very little faith in us setting up to have a go at a disorganised Celtic.

Jim on the bbc football Scottish gossip saying he doesn’t think we’ve played that badly 😮

Re: Dundee United vs Celtic - Wednesday 17th December (8PM)

We've not been good, but only really Falkirk at home were we terrible, in most games we've had decent spells and as Jackie said it sometimes comes down to fine margins,

Games are often decided on small  these margins and but for the refs seeing things no-one else did or not doing their jobs, we don't concede a pen v Killie, get a pen v The Huns.

The home form is a concern, but most of us would take a point at Killie, Tynecastle and Easter road and in the two Edinburgh games, maybe on a another day we get more.

Not excusing him or the lack of wins, we have to be better, but at no point have I felt the doom and gloom some fans seem to wallow in most/post games.

And that one point came on a day when it was blowing a gale at Tannadice.

Agree with most of that. Absolutely I would like to see us have more points at this stage of the season.  For me it's a 5/10 season so far. It seems to me that some fans default position is everything is shite unless it's proved otherwise.

Re: Dundee United vs Celtic - Wednesday 17th December (8PM)

HT 0-1

A shocking pathetic and completely disjointed performance.
Lucky it's not 4 or 5.

Edit to add, in his pre match comments to Sky Goodwin said we haven't been playing badly, the only bad performance was against St Mirren. Very debatable.
And, was he not at Tannadice v Falkirk then?

Cleall Harding for the desperate Esselink

Yes united!

Talk about a game of 2 halves!

Re: Dundee United vs Celtic - Wednesday 17th December (8PM)

They got let off the leash at the start of the 2nd half and showed what they can do. We definitely have some talented players going forward.
That result tonight was in spite of the tactics not because of it.

Re: Dundee United vs Celtic - Wednesday 17th December (8PM)

Wow.

What a roller coaster.

Was a shocker in the first half and as much as its easy to blame bert, he should not be exposed to maeda time after time. No idea whether that's the system or if it was strain not tracking back but he was getting torn a new one

Great dig second half.  Sapsford goal was class

Think this is the first time that jim Goodwin has had a team beat a big team. Been close so many times but lost late goals etc

Well done all involved

Re: Dundee United vs Celtic - Wednesday 17th December (8PM)

Great win, that's the most confident I've gone into a league game vs an Old Firm team in 30 years. Poor start but Jim made the changes, and there was never any doubt we'd score tonight, none whatsoever. The only worry was conceeding a couple of daft goals and for once we didn't. Great night for the club.

Re: Dundee United vs Celtic - Wednesday 17th December (8PM)

Wow. What a night.

First half was tough and they really should have been out of sight.  Although, Watters does have chances that he should be taking, or at least doing much better with.

Second half was as good as I've seen from us in a long time.  Sapsfords goal was unbelievable.

Wee moan about 2nd half is we need to be better at putting the ball into the box on the the deck.  Fatah was guilty a few times tonight of it and there were other times we just played the wrong pass, or passed instead of just taking a pop.

I think Dave Richards deserves a good bit of credit tonight too. Couple of great saves first half and I genuinely felt he handled the 2nd as well as he could.

Just a stat which I'll leave here.
Richards had the ball in hand or at feet 19 times in the match.
In all 19 cases he opted to punt it high and long.
In 18 of those cases we lost possession.
This is obviously instructions.

Not necessarily a negative, but maybe a point of debate for the way JG is setting us up to play. Must admit I never thought I'd see a 343 reliant on a big punt up the centre.

Could argue and say that stat says more about our outfield players ?

He had a couple of cracking saves first half that helped us no doubt.

Just edited my post. It's not a criticism of Richards, it's obviously what he's been told to do. And yes, done well tonight.
