20 years ago today - 20th January 1995

Sergio Gomes the first Brazillian to ever play in Scottish Football signed for Dundee United from Amora FC.

Made his debut just the following day at Tannadice Park. And ran riot as he led Utd to a thumping victory over Alex McLeish's Motherwell.

Dundee United 6 Motherwell 1

Full Name: Sérgio Henriques Gomes
Born: July 27th, 1969 (Juiz de Fora, Brazil)
Height: 5' 9
Position: Striker
Signed: January 20th, 1995 (£300,000)
Full Debut: January 21st, 1995 vs. Motherwell (6-1)
First Goal: February 25th, 1995 vs. Partick Thistle (2-0)
Utd Appearances - 16
Utd Goals - 4

I often wonder after that blitzkrieg of Motherwell (where we played some of the best fitba i've ever witnessed us playing) how the fuck we managed to get ourselves relegated just 4 months later.

Memories of Sergio lads?

Did Gomes no end up going to Kuwait. Something to do with an expired passport.

I was at that game too.  We were tremendous and that was against a good Motherwell side too.  Sergio scored an absolute peach at Tynecastle in the Scottish as well, but we still lost.

Too much commotion

Aye LAO - good Motherwell team. Checked to see that they did indeed finish 2nd and also see that was the biggest win of the season.

Remember he was an instant hit and disappeared too quickly.

He was banned from football worldwide after assaulting a referee was he not?

Dave Bowman said he was scary mental. High praise indeed.

Aye that's correct Bill.

Utd always seem to get fucked over in these situations.

Some might have seen him as a 'luxury' player in the 1st Division, but i reckon he would have played his part and scored plenty of goals.

He made his debut in the height of winter remember, and adapted to the rough and tumble of Scottish Fitba instantly.

One of the great 'what if's'...

Looked a great player, that goal at Tynecastle was something else.  Amazing that squad went down when none of the later 90s early 2000s teams did who were in the main far inferior.

Memories are a good player with a sublime touch, as you'd expect from his background, and an excellent finisher.

As far as success, or otherwise, goes it's as much to do with the team spirit as the players on the park.

I really believe Jackie is protecting/cultivating that team spirit very well under difficult circumstances, and I also believe the best team is not always the best 11 players.

Re: 20 years ago today - 20th January 1995

Golac never addressed the problems we had: decent goalkeeper to replace Guido and a creative player to take the onus off Badger.  Too many of the players were young laddies who couldn't handle the pressure and had been brought up knowing that if they played badly wee Jim would boot their arses suddenly had no fear of playing badly or failing to put the effort in in training. The ludicrous sale of Cleland and Bollan 2/3 of the way into the season defied belief with one player our best right back by far and the other a player who would have done a job later on in the season when the raft of suspensions in the last 3-4 games hit us and were the final nail in the coffin.

Oh, that and the fact that Badger, Petric and Brewster looked like they couldn't be arsed most of the time and Paddy Connolly and Scott Crabbe being out injured most of the season didn't help either.

In modern terms: 'We done a Hibs'.

I blame Kirkwood for taking us down more tbh.

He was not a Manager.

Re: 20 years ago today - 20th January 1995

I was at the Motherwell game with my dad, it was the best I saw United play so far back then. My dad actually phoned the club to see if the full game was taped somewhere and to get a copy. It wasn't, would love to see that full match again.
