Re: Last 10 days of Winter Window - What do we still need?

Not going to say it was a dissapointing window as we did sign players but I'm not too sure about some of the business we did.

I'm sure Sevelj and Stephenson could do a job at Left back/ left wingback but can't imagine it would be natural to them. Still no pace up front after the manager talking about this problem multiple times for the last 3 windows.

Not keen at all on Miller Thomson going out on loan. Arguably the best performance by a winger this season was him against Dundee opening game of the season, albeit I think Dundee had someone playing there who was either out of position or loanee who was sent back for being shite IIRC.

Trap and Middleton have been poor mostly when given an opportunity in their natural positions and Millers only chance was that game Goodwin attempted to put him up front and hooked him to change formation after half an hour. Fotheringham has done a job defensively in his few appearances also but generally doesn't offer real width that I think MT does...

Happy to have my pus shut after a 1-0 win at Celtic next week wi VDS scoring a 93rd minute winner from a Middleton Cross

WINTER WINDOW INS LEAGUE

St Johnstone 3 permanents +  5 loans = 8
Hearts 5 + 1 = 6
Sheep 3 + 3 = 6
M'well 1 + 5 = 6
Fun 2 + 2 = 4
County 1 + 3 = 4
Celtic 1 + 2 = 3
Utd 1 + 2 = 3
St Mirren 1 + 2 = 3
Killie 0 + 2 = 2
Hibs 1 + 0 = 1
Sevco 0 + 1 = 1

Sorry, quiet at work.

Miller T started v Hearts IIRC and looked like a lost laddie. Not sure if it was down to specific instructions that didn't suit him but he was anonymous and substituted.

I agree that Trapanovski has disappointed at times but how you can say Middleton has been poor is a mystery to me.

Pretty much their entire board stepped down in 2021. It's all different people now. It would be like a club refusing to do business with United because of something Stephen Thompson once said.

We poached their manager in 2003 and incited him to resign. Should they refuse to do business with United?

There may not have been any other interest from the Championship in Miller Thompson, we don't know, but he's unlikely to get a better club than Falkirk outside the Scottish Premiership.

I'm glad that Jim Goodwin can see beyond something that happened nearly 5 years ago.

Fuck, Falkirk 👍🏻

Aye the Hearts game is the one I was referencing when we put him upfront wi Dalby and he was hooked. A senseless experiment that would've been better served with playing two wingers with him as one of them IMO.

I think Middleton is the player that flatters to deceive the most at United and I just don't see what he brings. Constantly makes the wrong decision in the final third, doesn't exploit space when he's offered it, never seems to put in a decent cross unless he's playing against Arbroath. Only looked like a handy player occasionally in the Championship.

I personally don't think he's any better than MT, and at least MT has the justification of being younger and less experienced. Nothing personal against him, I just feel if he wasn't an Asghar signing who is probably on fairly decent wage because of that, he wouldn't still be getting a game.

Re: Last 10 days of Winter Window - What do we still need?

We are no worse than any other club, not much has really happened in terms of real improvements in anyone's starting 11 in our league.

Looking down south it's much the same, unless you are shelling out over the odds then nobody is letting any players go.

Some posters on this forum at times have short memories and unrealistic expectations.

This season for a team just promoted has to date been a success and if we slip to 10th it will still meet the objectives set by the club at the start of the season.

The same posters who slated players and management last season are now expecting them to be playing free flowing attractive football and finishing 3rd, it's mental.

Our starting eleven from last season that was assembled to fight our way back up are probably the spine of our best 11 this season. Why are people expecting us to turn over Kilmarnock and the likes the way we did Queens Park.

We have added some depth in some key areas and not in others, I would have liked some cover for Ferry.

Overall 6/10 for me but that's mainly down to what I've seen from Paton,  Fiorini and Campbell. Those guys will improve though, so when we look back in 12 weeks time it may turn out to be an overwhelming success.

Fair comment. And again, if I recall was started in a left sided position which doesn't suit him.

Not aimed at you personally, really more a general question is this -

I see a lot of comments on various different United platforms that say MT and Kai are getting held back. JG is stifling "our youth".  MT and Kai are not getting fair treatment.  MT and Kai are better than Middleton and Trapanovski.

Ok you get the picture so I'll stop there. But I do wonder if these calls are made not on the basis of quality but on the basis of some wanting young academy players played above all else even if the manager considers other available players are better at this time.

Both are right sided players. Should Goodwin have been playing either MT or Kai as a partner for Dalby in a front 2? I'm not seeing it but feel free to convince me otherwise.

Edit to add this. A lot of fans, AND Goodwin by the way were saying what a fantastic RB Miller will become.
Laddie got 2 or 3 starts at RB and gets found out on at least 2 maybe 3 occasions where he got wrong side of his attacker and we conceded a goal.
His performance in the first derby was electric but so was Trapanovski so it's not really a benchmark is it.
I think we will get a better player returning to us. Because McGlynn is a better coach of players than JG is and MT will be in very good hands there.

I would put yourself in that bracket at times if that's what you want me to say.

It's no surprise to yourself that we differ in opinions on style of play and results.

I think we have covered it as recently as the Killie game.

I don't keep a log, just a general opinion that I gauge of yourself and some other posters have expectations that don't match  mines from time to time.

Sometimes I agree and sometimes I don't.

Like everything mate it's all about opinions.

Fair enough. I thought you might be able to give me one example of my 'unrealistic expectations', but i wont harbour the point and can sense we've reached an impasse.

You've been disagreeing with me about United since the mid-90's.

Your life would probably get much easier if you just realised i am right about everything, and you only some of the time.

Whatever way you look at it Kai and Miller are not going to progress with limited game time.  Miller going to Falkirk is therefore a great move for him.  He should get to replace Morrison and should benefit from the better coaching from McGlynn.  I think we'll get a better, more rounded player back.

I feel for Kai a bit as his game time is going to continue to be limited but for cover reasons we couldn't let them both go out on loan.

Get a room you two...

There is a difference between expectations at the start of the season and expectations during it.  At the start of the season I'd have been happy with 10th.  Now I'll be gutted if we don't make top six and a little sad if we don't make Europe.

That doesn't mean that I am being unrealistic.  It means that circumstance has changed the ultimate goal.  That happens in all walks of life,

What surprises me is not people's expectations but their view of the circumstance.  Most United fans will have been like me - start of the season, 'just survive' now 'push on to Europe'.  However some seem to have missed the bit that has got us to the latter hope/belief.  That is that the team and Goodwin have performed beyond our expectations to this point.  People need to give Goodwin the credit for getting us into that position against the background of the Ogren ownership and Asghar fiasco - it is quite remarkable.  He doesn't seem to get that credit and some fans seem determined that we will ultimately fail.

I get that.  I think Goodwin has flaws, but he must (and does) have many strengths too.  I'm trying to be more glass half full and I think the Rangers game was the turning point for me.  I've never left a game against the Old Firm where we have lost, quite happy.  But I was and that was because I could see what we were doing.  It might have worked but Rangers were actually quite good.

We are on a sticky run, but I see no reason why we can't finish top six and if there get a Euro slot too.

Wouldn't be putting him anywhere near the delivery dept.

Orders would be going everywhere butvthe right place.

Sometimes a move to a new club just doesn't work for the player or the club and that's been the case with Odada.

I was surprised he wasn't away in January but if and when he does get a move I wish him all the best.

Fingers crossed it's a success for both Richard and OFK, I haven't seen one ounce of ability that makes me think he will make it at Tannadice.

Hats off to whoever managed to get someone to pay some of his wages.

Agreed, and not the only one although others have shown glimpses of ability to back up the offering of a contract or a transfer fee.

This summer will be another where we see a lot of ins and outs.
