Totally agree.

Let's get back to playing ugly, and winning. Even if it's 1-0 with an own goal.

It doesn't have to be either or, does it?

It IS possible to play football AND win

Re: Kilmarnock vs United - Saturday 1st February (5.45PM)

More than 24 hrs after the last disappointment, we've now got a free week (which is another story) so an opportunity to take stock.

I'm happy with Goodwin, love him as long as he's our chief tho to say I disliked him as a player is a huge understatement but we'll not go there.

So Goodwin's target was to keep us in the league which I think he's achieved so we should be grateful.

I'd say we're 10 points better off than where we might have been.

But our current 3rd place tho has to be one of the most false 3rd players in the time of the SPFL Prem.

Were it not for the meteoric collapse from the Sheep and the capital twins inexplicably propping up the league before Xmas we would be out of the top 6 and we would be nearer to the bottom 3 than to the top 2.

Saturday evening was another big let-down, it ruined an otherwise enjoyable Saturday afternoon.

It was so similar to many of the previous 24 league fixtures (W 10, D 7, L 7). I've seen every Home game but only 4 of the Away games & safe to say I have not been thrilled too often.

We've scored 32 goals, only 5 teams have scored less, and there's the problem, we're goal shy, a single goal scored is an event.

We've conceded only 28 goals which is 3rd best by miles and I pay homage to Gallacher & Holt, they to my mind have been excellent this season, they compliment each other admirably.

Walton has been very steady too & fuck Dickinson yesterday.

Why are we not clicking? Adegboyega & Stephenson have been picked too often.

The ever- changing midfield is not the 3rd best in the league with doubts about Docherty & will Sibbald cut it when he gets back in?

And if Dalby is the top league scorer that says more about the rest than about him.

Ferry is the only player who would get a game for any of our opponents.

Gallacher & Holt would get a game for most teams.

We're playing a non-scoring brand of football which is never a great watch and we've been fortunate to win some games we probably didn't deserve to, e.g. the two St M away games & Hibs at Home.

Not mentioning our VAR fortunes, it pleases no team, it's just shite & isn't worth comment

If we don't start scoring more goals I can't see us we making the top 6.

How many league games have we scored more than 2 goals this season?

When M'well come is it too much to ask for a 3-0 or heaven forbid a 4-0?

Entertainment to all of us is United winning, that's all we want. But is winning with a bit style & verve to get the stands rocking too much to ask?

For the run-in to the split, Gallacher, Holt & Walton keep up the good work.

Jim Goodwin, surprise us, give us some goals.

Kinda figured that part of my post would be singled out by someone.
I'm not asking for entertainment I'm asking for my football team to be able to construct a simple football move through midfield with more than 2 passes before it breaks down.

Mate, I'm with you.

Just quoting someone else from this forum.😎

Ah ok, cheers 😁

I’d say Tam Courts’ finish would beat that.

“We've scored 32 goals, only 5 teams have scored less, and there's the problem, we're goal shy, a single goal scored is an event.”

Only 5 teams?! That’s near half the league.

“Ferry is the only player who would get a game for any of our opponents.

Gallacher & Holt would get a game for most teams.”

Errm. No sure what that means.

We might no be playing the best looking football but up until this current blip we’ve been very effective and I bet most teams hate playing against us. Just look at Airdrie for a good example of sticking with “Bonny futba”—-absolute Tom Kite.

I think we’ll make top six easily (touch wood).

Re: Kilmarnock vs United - Saturday 1st February (5.45PM)

Sorry Japan, I was complimenting who I think have been our 3 best players this season. Gallacher & Holt have been thundering away thousands of headers all season, as recently as Saturday night which still rankles.

Agreed, Tam Court's 4th place trumped Jim Goodwin's current 3rd by a distance. #azalkmaar

Our current blip? It's been going all season, we've blipped our way into 3rd all along. Name our best wins this season. They're outnumbered by our biggest disappointments and I'm being honest, not negative.

I'm not knocking us tho it might seem like I am but I do think we need to give ourselves a tweak, we've been handed on a plate the advantage of 3rd place for weeks now so why not go out & give the bottom 9 a jolt & show them that we're worth it, we do have the tools.

Re: Kilmarnock vs United - Saturday 1st February (5.45PM)

We've been handed nothing on a plate. We've recruited reasonably well (time will tell if that changes). We've got a system which makes us difficult to beat. It may not be pretty but it's effective. We've conceded the least goals outwith the old firm.  Our team works it's arse off for 90 minutes. We've been lucky in some of those games to take 3 points where you'd maybe say on balance a draw would be fair but equally We've had games where We've deserved at least a draw and been beaten.

Because the league is tight, doesn't make it sh!te. Just means all teams are pretty close in ability and We've found a way to win more than our opponents.

We are not prime Brazil but Goodwin has got a Goodwin style team - hard working, disciplined with a bit of flair at times. We've also had an extremely tough set of fixtures lately - January had both cheeks, the dee twice and jambos.

If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

Re: Kilmarnock vs United - Saturday 1st February (5.45PM)

Couple more things occur.

The goal:
40, 50 years ago, dead set stands. this however is 2025 goalies are covered rightly or wrongly like an endangered species.  Not on occasion in Scottish football where - and this is why I prefer Scottish football - things are more physical except of course with the exception of that other unique protected species, the ugly twosome.
The point being, if we're ever going to succeed internationally we're sadly going to have to rein in our preference for physical, blood & guts football because internationally that goal never stands.
Vijko Sevelj alluded to the technical superiority he was brought up learning in Croatia, poulation 3.85 million.

Looking more at the difference between Scottish and Oscar winning international football, it's our instinct not to roll around greeting (excl Watt).  Unfortunatately Walton followed instinct and integrity and berated ref over the decision. He would have been better served going down like a stunned mullet and looked for a concussion call which would have inevitably have swayed VAR in our favour.

No nomination this year Jack.

Re: Kilmarnock vs United - Saturday 1st February (5.45PM)

There's a clip from not 40 or 50 years but maybe 100 years Shakey where a polo neck clad goalie a yard off his line with ball in hand is barged by the big opposing centre forward not once, not twice, but thrice till he's over his line & the goal stands!
And you're right about our acting ability, in the Oscars league we're 12th but I'm proud of that & hope we don't change, it's a blight of football and stinks.

Re: Kilmarnock vs United - Saturday 1st February (5.45PM)

How many times do we see in a game now, not just recently but for years and years now, where a keeper goes into a crowd of players at a corner and gets a free kick if anybody even barely touches him?

And yet that goal on Saturday was fine?  VAR don’t even advise the ref to go and look at it?

Honestly I find it bizarre.

We got done there, no two ways about it, and it still rankles.

What got me tho in the immediate aftermath was the number of our fans who couldn't do anything but blame the goalie, 'a goal all day long' was a typical comment. That boiled my piss so it did.

I'm hot on body language & Watkins runs off saying, 'I'm not getting this am I?'

If luck evens itself out we're due a few slices, that's for sure.

Re: Kilmarnock vs United - Saturday 1st February (5.45PM)

The defense is leaking goals, the midfield looks lost, and we’re offering next to nothing going forward. Other teams around us are finding ways to grind out results, but we’re just slipping further back. If he doesn’t sort this out ASAP, we’ll be looking over our shoulders real soon. This has been a terrible start to the new year and dare I say - looks like it its not changing.

Are you sure you've not been watching the Dee?  We are difficult to score against.  Our midfield was out of sorts against Killie (Stephenson and Sevelj look tired and Campbell looks like he needs some time to get used to his team mates) and I think we need more width than Goodwin seems to fancy, but they're not doing too bad.  You can at least see what he is trying to do.  We were a real threat against Rangers and should have scored against Killie.

Way too pessimistic Conway. There are always going to be challenges and periods of concern in this league with our resources, but there are plenty of teams below us with more issues.  We might not make Europe, but think we'll stay top six and that isn't a bad return given where we were this time last year.

Re: Kilmarnock vs United - Saturday 1st February (5.45PM)

We're sitting on a league record LLWLL with the W in the middle a jammy 3 points at Paisley.
We have scored 2 goals in these 5 games.
With Celtic (A) we'll be 3 points out of 18. We then have M'well & Hibs both at home within the space of 4 days before the end of the month and if we don't get much out of them we'll be lucky to be in the top 6, never mind 3rd.
The performance at Killie was not good with the shitey goal against making it worse but we could do nothing about it. A great Stephenson pass to their one defender when we had a 3 on 2 and Middleton somehow splitting the goal & Dalby from the far post.
So I'm sorry cos I'm more on Conway's side here I'm afraid.

And we might have been looking forward to a wee change, a home game in the last 16 of the Scottish Cup, this Saturday, but that's not happening either.

Btw Motherwell have beaten us 3 times out of 3 this season. It's not their games against us that got Dracula the sack.

On that record, I'll comment on the games I attended/saw:

Killie (A) - played poorly but still never looked like losing a goal until Watkins fouled the keeper.  Should have scored a couple.  Not good, but we weren't exactly turned over!

Rangers (H) - played well against a good team who will always finish above us at the moment.  In it until 86th minute and probably deserved a draw.  Clement comments that he can see why we are third in the league.

St Mirren (A) - bar the pen (which wasn't) and the Walton save for the one on one didn't look likely to lose a goal.  A bit meh upfront but took our chance to win the game well.  Played better than we did at Killie and probably deserved the win.

Celtic (A) - like pretty much every other team in the league lost but not by a margin and received plaudits from Celtic fans.  Defensively soundish and took the game to them second half without totally shooting ourselves in the foot.

Hearts (H) - wasn't at it and didn't see it, but seems we were poor.  Still only lost a goal (and a jammy one at that) compared to the Dees 6-0 routing.

Overall a worrying trend of results but really only the Killie and Hearts games were truly disappointing and both of those we lost to very lucky goals.

As a United fan for years I am always wary of the next total arse collapse, but I just don't think this is it.  We've competed with all teams and have mastered most.  The cups have been disappointing but I'll take that for a top six finish in the first season back.  I have also been one of Goodwin's sharpest critics until this season.  He is still getting some things wrong and he is still too conservative, but we have come a very long way since he has taken over and even since the end of last season (where, for me, he only got pass marks for winning the league).

Third probably flatters us, but having got there it is far more deserved than the 4th place we achieved a couple of seasons ago.

Watching a different Dundee United than me.

Brilliant defense this season and we offer lots going forward, things just ain't falling for us at present.

Dundee in the cup, hit the post and the keeper had the game of his life.

Rangers at home we had plenty of chances, very unlucky hitting the woodwork a few times.

Last week, hit the bar.

Fine margins.

Things will turn in a few weeks, keep the heed.
