Farce

Does anyone agree that the presence of Celtic in our league is farcical? Scotland's football authorities should give serious thought to removing this steam-roller from our midst. Their dominance is absolutely unfair to the other teams, whose supporters must be truly sick of this uneven situation. Celtic should join the English leagues. And, in the interests of Scottish football, be accompanied by their Old Firm opponents. Of course, we all know this will never happen. The financial input from the hordes of fanatical supporters tells the tale.

Re: Farce

Ian,

Good to see you posting, Sir.

I recall about 2012 writing a post on Utd Mad stating that the only way Scottish Football would move forward and become interesting ever again is if every club outwith the Old Firm offered their immediate resignation form the SPFL.

My post didn't go down very well.

In the subsequent time every single league title bar one has been won by Celtic (that was the year Gerrard won it with Rangers).

We are nearing 40 years since Aberdeen won the league in May 1985 in Fergie's penultimate season in charge at Pittodrie.

40 years of absolute Old Firm dominance and the rest of us happy to pick up the scraps.

When does it end?

50 years? 60? 70?

I personally think (and always have) that our league would be fantastic without them.

A competitive league where everyone would fancy their chances of winning it.

That equals good crowds, excitement, and = a t.v. deal.

But unfortunately in my lifetime Scotland isn't a country where material change happens quickly (or ever in some cases).

Re: Farce

Spot on. The other 10 clubs should resign from the SPFL en masse.
Start up their own league with a clear set of rules in the attempt to bring a competitive element to the game.
As it stands no other team will ever win the league again, nobody can argue that is good for Scottish football.

Re: Farce

Inclined to agree with TEKs points.

The only slight disagreement I have is that if the OF aren't leaving then the top flight should be extended to 16 or 18 teams.

With the current set up it is just about impossible for a team to get any kind of run going before they will inevitably play either half of the cheeks and suddenly they're scudded with 10 goals against and any kind of momentum is broken.

You may nab a point here and there but next time round they will have the depth to shuffle the pack to exploit a weakness they couldn't get at last night and next thing it's another hammering.

I personally think playing 1 home, 1 away would give teams the impetus to go out and make a game of it against the OF. This idea of a 'free hit' doesn't exist in a league where you will play them a least another 2 times and possibly 4, 5 or 6 times if you're really lucky and go to the latter stages of cups and finish in the top half.

Just now I feel most managers find there is no point in throwing a punch as, against celtic at any rate, you'll get torn to pieces and avoiding three incredibly heavy defeats by not taking risks and defending for your life is more beneficial for your squad than a very, very unlikely draw is by opening up against them.
