I see McGinn has been in the press saying he had hoped to be joining us in 2015 but McNamara opted for (the non-footballer) Rodney Sneijder instead. Hadn't previously been aware of this additional Jackie faux pas in 2015 - he really did mess us up.

Stephen Thompson said that as well on Off the ball a couple of weeks ago. He also said Sackie turned down Jackson Irvine at the same time .

I remember being raging at the time he went to Hibs in the first division over us.
This explains it a bit, but also makes it worse.
Sure it was mainly down to the specialist in failure Macnamara. But the snake would have been only too happy not to pay the money for either. Was Rodney not free?

It was a monumental fuck up. If we'd signed McGinn we would have signed a goalscorer, a creator and a matchwinner. We also don't subsequently sign Snjeider or Khul, because he would have played week in, week out.
Would he have been enough to keep us up that season? Maybe, maybe not. But he would definitely have helped us win the Championship at first time of asking and would have helped us get a 7 figure fee.
Talk about a 'sliding doors' moment.

Had heard at the time we offered 100K and wouldn’t up it to 180K that St Mirren wanted.
Fuck Thompson and McNamara, pair of utter cunts.

Utter madness.
You have to think Jackie Mac was expecting to make more short term on Snjeider than playing a long game with McGinn.
Don't know if it was just forum talk but the story was that Rodney turned up on one of our European preseason trips, did a few keepie uppies, played ok in a bounce game and Jackie was won over. What a prick.
The rumour I heard about why the contract was ripped up was due to AHEM powdery medical testing, anyone else hear that.

Snjeider had a bad panic attack, which was the result of a come down after he'd been to Ibiza partying for days. I remember we unbelievably let him take the holiday and just come back the week of the Aberdeen game (where he looked like a fish out of water in his short cameo).
It's hard to know what happened there after that and why he didn't mentally recover enough to ever play for United, but his career petered out after that. My guess is he was using a substance, probably the one you alluded to.
The whole episode was rather bizarre and with hindsight was the pre-cursor for a disastrous season, given he was our 'Marquee signing' and we opted for him over McGinn.
