What XI and formation would you play for Saturday's match?

Re: Utd Vs St.Johnstone - Saturday 24th September

                                 Walton
           Adegboyega Gallagher Graham
Stephenson                                           Ferry
                        Babunski Sevelj
Thompson                                         Trapnovski
                         Van De Sande

Alternatively, put Babunski out on the wing in place of Thompson and play Sibbald (or Docherty if 100% fit) in CM.

Oooooohhhh yeeeeeaaaaaah!!

Re: Utd Vs St.Johnstone - Saturday 24th September

Walton
Adegboyega Gallagher Graham
Stephenson babunski sibbald ferry
Thomson moult trapnovski

Got a feeling babunski will be pushed out the right wing again though and either holt or sevelj will be in beside sibbald.

             Walton
Adegboya,  Gallacher   Graham
Stephenson, Sevelj, Sibbs, Ferry
Babunski
   Trapanovski
        VDS

Hate dropping young Thompson.
He's a fan of Holt so we might see him in there.

Re: Utd Vs St.Johnstone - Saturday 24th September

Going by today's press conference I don't think Seve will be fit to play, so I guess it Holt again in the middle of midfield.

Interesting he said that he only has two senior strikrs (Moult and VDS) and only one kid (big Owen).  What happening with Rory?

I was told he is definitely signing for Southampton.

Not sure why it is taking so long.

Relieved Goodwin seems to accept we need another Striker and a different one at that. If Fotheringham does get sold and Stirton and Forbes on loan then I wouldn't mind another attacking player also.

That's encouraging.
With a 1,000 away support might manage about 8,500?

Utd have got themselves into a situation where 3hrs before the kick off if 2 ' casual ' fans want to buy tickets beside each other there is no availability.
With about 5000 empty seats today its maybe time for a rethink.

Re: Utd Vs St.Johnstone - Saturday 24th September

2-0 and we never looked like conceding other than the "Mark Kerresque" back pass from Stephenson so very happy with the result.

I'm not necessarily against the 5-4-1 thing we're playing but babunski playing out on the right to cater for holt absolutely killed us in the first half. Took a bit of luck and some fantastic play from Trap in the 2nd half to get the first goal.

Moult immediately replacing him and Babunski going back In the middle for 5-3-2  made us look a lot more balanced and I thought Moult looked very good when he came on and was denied a couple of chances by some bad luck.

Concerned that this change in tactics wouldn't have worked had ST Johnstone not been chasing the game though. They had to open up which allowed Sibbald and holt to cause a few turnovers in possession in the midfield allowing us to hit on the break.

Maybe I'm being a bit negative but just some thoughts.

Stephenson well deserved motm, ran amok 2nd half and was the most fouled player on the park it felt like by the end.

Great 3 points to get the season rolling.

Re: Utd Vs St.Johnstone - Saturday 24th September

Really good result. And a decent start to the season now.

Bit concerned as we were not very good against RC or Sts today. Probably 2 teams who will be near the bottom of the table. But points are all that matters just now. Get a base to build on. Get confidence up and hope the performances improve as season goes on.

Our defence is looking better as the season goes on.

Re: Utd Vs St.Johnstone - Saturday 24th September

We were miles off it imo, extremely lucky to go in level, far too much negative passes, midfield not looking to put there foot on it.

How many times did we handover possession trying to play in Trapanovski 🤷‍♂️

I would have subbed Luca at half time,  he really struggled (wasn't the only one) in the first half. Thankfully though Jim Goodwin is the boss and not me.

Second half we were clearly much better as everyone above has commented.

Disappointing games overall for Trapanovski and Babunski but decent stuff from the big man up top, he looks a real handful at times for opposition defenders to deal with.

Good three points and decent day all round.

Finally that walloper with the whistle, fuck me man🤷‍♂️

Booked Ferry and Luca and rightfully so but then proceeds to let them away with fuckin murder. How on earth that number 11 never got at least one yellow is fuckin beyond me.

I haven't seen it back but the boy was nowhere near with Walton and went right through him, again the ref bought it and never booked him, fuck the free kick just prior to it was as blatant a dive as you will ever see.

The big number 5 done his best Tom Daly impression and dived on the ball, Goodwin then got booked for telling him what he thought.

Should have got a penalty I thought but again never seen it back.

Fortunately this imbecile never stopped us collecting three points today, boy was fuckin horrific.

Last point,  how much better was sibbald once Docherty came on, night and day.

3 points, have a great weekend Arabs.

Re: Utd Vs St.Johnstone - Saturday 24th September

First half was one of the worst halves of football I’ve ever seen. Poor ball must’ve had a concussion. WTF was that booing all about at half time though? No fucking need for that, you’d think we were 3-0 down.

Second half was better if not great. I understand Goodwin’s playing this system to make sure we’re solid at the back. And minus a few wee fuck ups, we have been. But I just think we have the players to be playing a bit more expansive. I’d love to see us trying a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 with Docherty and Sibbald sitting and giving us a bit of protection and graft with Babunski in the 10, Trapanovski on the left with Ferry overlapping, Miller T on the right and Van der Sande up top holding it up and bringing the 3 attackers into play.

It’s been a solid start, but not always the most pleasing on the eye, which is disappointing because I think there’s a right good football team in there that can play some pretty stuff  if we can change the system to suit.

I called it with van der Sande as soon as I watched 5 mins of him on YouTube when he signed. He’s a slightly smaller, ginger Jon Daly. Don’t know if he’ll get as many goals as JD - in fairness - he’s playing a lot deeper than Daly did. But he is so so similar in terms of his physicality, work rate, selflessness, hold up play and intelligent movement and passes.

Not to mention he’ll get the same stick off certain fans cause he runs like he’s towing a caravan, but he’s the type of target man we’ve lacked up top since Daly left, think he too would do really well in a front 2 with a poacher or a quick wee Russell type playing off him.

Re: Utd Vs St.Johnstone - Saturday 24th September

Canna believe its 10 year since we've baet they Perth hoors at Tannadice. So a welcome 3 points.

Thought the 1st half was uninspiring.

At least 3 times the day Walton was needlessly put under pressure, and they nearly ah ended up in disaster.

Holt midway in the rubber johnnies half, passes back, somedy else passes back, and before ye ken it, the Johnnie's have got an opportunity on goal. WTF was Holt thinkin aboot. And wha the phuck is teaching the players to pass the ba across the face oe goal, when thirs opposin players in the box. If it wasna fir the boy puttin the ba skyward .....

When the boy run inta Walton, Ref blahs fir the free-kick right away. So how come he never booked the chunt.

Tell me if Ehv got this right.
1st Half

Thon we pr1ck No. 16 gets a Yellow fir pushin Gallagher inta Walton, then HE runs inta Walton.
2nd Half
(this happens right in front of me)
He gets a 2nd Yellow fir a foul on Ferry. = RED so he's aff.
He then punches Holt in the bas and gets a another RED on tap oe the twa Yellows he's ahriddy got?
= (2 x Yellows) + 1 RED

Still think Robertson couldna referee a gehm oe subbuteo.

Gled Luca got a goal. He was MOTM for me the day. And the 2nd - was it an OG fir the defender ?

Re: Utd Vs St.Johnstone - Saturday 24th September

Really poor first first where we struggled to get our full backs and Trapanovski involved with very little creativity can't think of a chance of note. Much better second half when Moult came on looked a much better threat when we went two up top. Ross Graham was outstanding again I thought his long throws are going to be a real asset for us this season.

Re: Utd Vs St.Johnstone - Saturday 24th September

A good result and well deserved.

Getting Hearts next Sunday at a good time (hopefully), in poor form and a tough game on Thursday for them against Plzen where they'll have no choice but to go all out for the win. Be good if it went into Extra Time.

I agree the first half was scrappy and frustrating but it doesn't compare to how bad we were for a whole 90 at Dunfermline which  had everyone depressed and angry. That said it wasn't great, we were hurried and sloppy. Played too fast and hit it long too often when we never needed to.
Fair play to the gaffer he got them in at halftime lucky at 00 said the right things because we wer much better second half.
3 new signings involved in the first goal too. The defence is so much better the new guy at CB is settling in great, Gallacher is back performance wise and our attacking full backs are a joy to watch and that's the foundation needed to stop the opposition.
Think the attack will get better as they play more games together need to remember it's virtually a brand new team out there.
Can see Docherty better beside Sibald but Goodwin does love Holt so no idea what he's going to do there going forward.
Babunski does his best work in the final third and we need a system that allows him to be there. If we get Babunski in that forward 10 position we can't afford to leave Sibbald exposed on his own.
Van der Sand does a power of work and maybe won't get credit for that with some supporters if he's not scoring but if we regularly get the points we need that shouldn't matter.
Of our signings so far I give top marks for getting Walton back in, 2 brilliant saves today, Trapanovski Babunski Ferry (a genius find) and Stephenson, Adeboyega coming on to a game. 3of the new signings combining for the first goal, great to see.
For me need to see more of Van Der Sand to make a full judgement but he's slotted in really well and Moult looks sharper as a result too. The other signings we'll have to wait and see. But overall I'm happy with the way were shaping up  and Goodwin is starting to make creative subs instead of reactive ones.
Some harder fixtures coming up but I think we've made a good start and probably only going to get better as a cohesive unit.

Re: Utd Vs St.Johnstone - Saturday 24th September

Thought we were much better in the second half especially when we went 2 up top. First goal is some lovely play. Good hold up from Jort, cracking play out wide from Trapa then unlucky from Dave before Luca guided it home. Second goal was utter shite defending from them. Their keeper is stinking.

I feel for big Jort, his hold up play is excellent but he’s not a lone striker unless you’re playing away in Europe.

Well done to the defence, 2 clean sheets in a row (should be 3).

Re: Utd Vs St.Johnstone - Saturday 24th September

First half utter pish, couldn’t string 2 passes together.

Thought that was Trapanovski’s poorest game for us so far, was getting nothing out of their right back… well until he skinned him to set up the first goal!

Looked so much better after Louis came on.

The ref… their number 11 committed two cynical fouls in the space of 2 minutes just before the red card incident - no booking.  Then the boy gets a yellow for that challenge on Ferry which was nothing really.

Re: Utd Vs St.Johnstone - Saturday 24th September

Agree with most on here. Improved second period.

I guess this is the start og opposition managers seeing the talent trapanovski has and he was getting 2 on him at all times - first half. He was out only out ball. It was long to him which they'd worked out.

There's nothing creative in the middle - so we couldn't build up play there. Feel Babunski was wasted on the right. Had moments but his game is not to be skinning fullbacks. He needs to see the game and be allowed to make passes.

As others have said, vd sande is doing a power of work and i do see him in a similar role to Bobby formino did for Liverpool- his work make salah and mane look even better - but I do wish he'd got off the mark by now - I think he's deserving of it

An odd game in general. A 2 nil win where I felt we controlled it for large parts but equally, didn't trouble their keeper that often

If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

Re: Utd Vs St.Johnstone - Saturday 24th September

First half utter guff, babunski higher up the park on the right just doesn’t work, our only outlet was pump the ball up to VDS or pump ball over top to trappa, really missed having a out ball on the right.

Second half was much much better especially when moult came on, VDS for all his good work I don’t think he is a loan striker, he’s really good at holding the ball up and linking but when he’s doing that he’s normally always 30/35 yards from goal, would really like to see us get a pacey forward in to play along side him but with this formation your kinda limited to what you can actually do, it’s a bit of head ache but a good head ache that your struggling to get your good players in the team.

Save from Walton from Carey in the second half was magic, how the fuck Carey not get a booking for both his tackles near the end both absolute brickers 🤣 ref was a shambles all day.

Will ferry is gonna make us a hell of a lot of money, he is a serious serious player, no be long to Celtic are sniffing around nae doubt. Manny and Stephenson (after a difficult first half) really are looking good, manny is a bit too composed for liking sometimes he’s got a bit of ayina about him on the ball but is no where near as rash as him but is also looks to be a better defender.

Positive weekend and a much needed win with a few hard games coming up.

Re: Utd Vs St.Johnstone - Saturday 24th September

I do think that one of Goodwin’s biggest strengths is his recruitment- Ferry and Traponovski on free transfers and 3 year deals is brilliant business.  Ferry has been our most consistent player and Trapanovski has a level of skill higher than any other winger in the league outside the old firm IMO, think he’ll only get better too.

On VDS I agree be good to see him get a goal soon but he hasn’t really looked like scoring or being in a position to score other than when he squared to Thomson in first minute at Dingwall, he’s doing well though, very hardworking and unselfish.  Agree that a fast striker playing off him could be effective.
