How many players do we need?

I'd say 8.

4 to replace to the entire midfield we've just lost (Harkes, Butcher, Levitt, McDonald).

2 different type of Strikers. A target man (a must) and a buzzbomb type of forward who's pacey and chases everything, pesters defenders (a Noel Hunt type).

A Goalkeeper who challenges Eriksson for No.1

And 1 out and out winger (left side or right side). Though hopefully right sided.

Re: How many players do we need?

Would agree with that Tek but also add in a right-sided centre back as cover for Edwards.

Re: How many players do we need?

I was looking forward to the season starting until I've read this thread as I can't disagree with both quotes but can't see how the hell we can sign 9 first team ready players so we can compete again this season.

Thats interesting actually. Now that we gave up Neilson to hearts I dont think we have a young backup to develop

Re: How many players do we need?

The starting 11 from the last game of the season are all still at United and under contract apart from Dylan Levitt.  So we still have a decent core but clearly need to add quality and bit of depth.  2 midfielders and a centre forward should be the absolute priority.

Is the boy Hutchison who was on loan at Dumbarton any good?  Could he develop into a premier league player?

Sorry but we ain't gonna get 8 or 9.
We already have some players remember.

The club were openly saying we were going for 6 or 7 and that was when we were expecting Harkes and Neilson to stay. I can see a real big recruitment drive this summer.

Re: How many players do we need?

Agree with the original post but think this season must see either Meekison or Mochrie getting a proper chance of regular starts. We can't keep talking up youth then bringing in experienced players to block their pathway. At some point they've got to sink or swim. Meekison is ready imho judging by the wee run he got at the end of last season.

how does Glass and Chalmers fit in this in your opinion?

Re: How many players do we need?

Don't think we will get anywhere near 8 or 9.

I'd like a starting striker and a younger lad to come in and develop (Not sure our youths are at that stage or not - maybe chalmers).

Equally, with wingers, I'd like a decent option to play in the forward 3. Niskanen and watt need a back up - I'm not sure if glass or mochrie play there. Unless we go watt up top and get 2 wingers. I guess we need flexibility.

Midfield will be harkes + 2 signings. A jeando type would be great and maybe one who has a killer pass ala Charlie Miller and just let harkes be the athletic box to box midfielder.

Goalkeeper. I've no idea how good the boy erikksen is but we'd be screwed if he got injured

Soi think we will get...
gk
Cm
Cm
Cm
Winger
St

With youths stepping up to take a more prominent role

If we don't sign 8 or 9 then we are gambling on the likes of Glass, Mochrie, Chalmers and Duffy being able to step-up this season.

Now i'd like to be able to think they could. But that remains to be seen.

If we are actually serious about being at the top end of the table, getting far in the Cups and staying in Europe beyond the schools going back, then we back our Manager, give him a chance and sign 8 or 9 (and 6 or 7 need to be starters).

Re: How many players do we need?

I'd rather we signed 3 key players than 8 squad players .

8 would be great, if we can get the right 8, but I would rather see quality over quantity.  Hopefully we can fill in the gaps with loan players once we have the key players in place.

Sounds like you don't have faith in our Sporting Director to produce 8 signings of the required quality.

Both well and truly in the last chance saloon imho. Kind of felt sorry for Glass getting punted out on loan just when he was starting to make an impression. Interesting to see what Ross thinks of Chalmers since he likes to play with wingers.

More than I don't have faith in our wage structure supporting 8 quality signings.

You have to have good recruitment in place to get quality in the door within a constricted budget.

Look at Ross County last season. Brought in players like Reagan Charles-Cook, Joseph Hungbo, Ross Callachan, Harry Clarke etc.

Utd could easily have afforded either and all of these guys.

Out of those only Callachan signed last year, Reagan Charles-Cook joined two seasons ago and the others were loan players.

I think you are suffering from grass is always greener, we have competed with that.

You're splitting hairs here, i feel. What do loan signings not count? Should we take no credit for the Dylan Levitt signing then?

My point is/was (which you seemed to have missed) that there are good players out there, who you can sign for free and on reasonable wages. If your recruitment is good.

Would have to disagree that we competed with them (in an attacking sense anyway).

Because I said this earlier in the post you originally responded to

"Hopefully we can fill in the gaps with loan players once we have the key players in place."

I'm just saying every year we bring in lots of players most of them are shit.  And every year people say we need lots of new players again.  All I am saying is I would be v happy with a lower number as long as they are the right quality.  And youngsters and loan signings will fill in the gaps.

I actually think I might have it wrong and we should focus more on quality loan signings as I think that could be an easier way to find talent these last few years.

But clearly there are useless bench warmers in that market too (not to mention Mark McNulty god bless him)

Re: How many players do we need?

Whether Levitt signs or not, hopefully his previous loan has shown big Premier teams we can be trusted the develop and showcase their best talents and not just pick up the occasional lad who doesn't get a game.

Speaking of Meekison I've a confession to make.
It revolves round one of the last home games last season & a senior moment from me.
Every time Levitt got the ball & did something good I was prodding a mate on either side & saying 'you see that, you can see the difference, it's just class'.
Only it wasn't Levitt! Half way thro the 2nd half I came to realise it was our Archie!

In my defence they do look quite similar!

 Can relate !
