Member’s Update following the Q&A at the AGM on Saturday 31 July 2021
Tony Asghar (TA) confirmed that Mark Ogren was still at United for the long term and the sustainability plan was still being pursued. This involved rearing our own players and identifying players with other clubs who we could improve and ultimately sell on , a conveyor belt approach. He also confirmed that funds of around £350k a month had been input by the owner to keep the Club going during the pandemic, which showed and proved commitment beyond words.
He accepted that his use word negative in relation to some fans may be better described as concerned. TA confirmed that the previous model was unsustainable but even at this stage of the Clubs plan the Club was worth a lot more due to the numerous assets they now had on the field and in the pipeline. TA confirmed that the Head Coach position had to buy into the Clubs vision and plan and that the Club would not change this at the request of a Head Coach. Thus Tam Courts (TC) had been appointed as he was known to the management , was totally on board re the vision and plan, as that was one of the reasons he left Kelty Hearts to join United, and importantly knew the players and staff at all levels. Micky Mellon had left by mutual agreement as he did not share the vision and plan moving forward.
The plan for recruitment did not involve trialists rather individuals were identified and then pursued, even if this involved having to buy the player. Previously plans had been reactive and this was not how the current management operated. We had recently lost two potential signings one who opted to sign for a team who could provide European football this season and another who was concerned about the existing competition within the team already for their position (goalkeeper). TC confirmed a winger had been identified who was an internationalist and could play on either flank and recently had been used as a substitute which gave United hope that a deal could be done. Another position identified was for an experienced midfielder who could calm the play when required to allow the team to take stock and go again. TA stated that it was almost guaranteed that there would be comings and goings before the window shuts but the Club would ideally like Benji and Shankland to stay and sign new deals. On questioning TA confirmed that if Shankland was sold then they had identified a replacement and would move quickly to secure his signing. This succession planning was the way the recruitment team operate in relation to all our player assets. Overseas markets were also being investigated as there were some opportunities there before this avenue closed in September due to Brexit.
TC confirmed he would always deliver a positive response to games when questioned by the media but that did not mean he wasn't aware of shortcomings or that he did not make it very clear to the players as a group and individually where performances had fallen short. He said part of his remit was to challenge the younger players to oust the more established players and thus get their place in the team on merit and not on the basis of they were getting a game to see how they were progressing. TC also said that one of the next tests was to see how the younger players would react if they made a mistake in a league game where a crowd was present and also how the crowd would react to any mistake which was made especially if it was costly.
He confirmed his coaching team included Adam Asghar and said this was his decision and that he had known Adam a long time before he met TA. TA had cautioned him about the appointment as he knew how this could possibly be received, based on Adam’s relationship with TA (son) and his age. TC said he was more interested in having the right team than having to face a possibly difficult question, Adam’s role was that of a conduit between the first team and the youths.
Declan Glass had today (31 July) signed a new and improved two year contract and hoped to be back playing in the first team within 2 months.
He confirmed he had been very well looked after by United when it was raised that the Club hadn't wished him a speedy recovery on social media after he sustained his injury. TC confirmed that whilst the Club could improve their social media offering as far as players were concerned actions spoke louder than words. TA agreed to take on board the task of improving the social media function of the Club although he stressed that the department concerned had just been changed and it was a small department in staffing numbers.
Dave Bowman stated that the difference between the current regime and the previous one was chalk and cheese citing times when he had to drive the youngsters to Dingwall, play a game and drive back with no food being provided by the Club. He also said that on one occasion they we asked why they needed footballs to train the youth players !
The meeting ended on a positive note with the fans thanking the panel for honest and detailed answers and wished TC and his team well tomorrow and for the season ahead.”

Main thoughts are written within the text ‘actions speak louder than words”.
Can’t argue with anything said, they certainly all talk a good game but we now need the senior management, recruitment team, coaching staff and players to all step up.
Interesting that Glass has a new contract. We now actually have lots of players for that off-the-striker position without anyone really being an obvious choice.

There seems to be a fair bit of contradiction from what is said above and what we've heard previously and also areas where I dount what they are saying is the truth.
For instance. The brexit thing - I'm sure less than a month ago, we had a bit in the press about how we were going to have some foreign flare (or some other such piece which pointed at us taking in foreign players.
The other one - if Shanks is sold, we've got a player lined up to replace him. So - either shanks is leaving and we have somebody ready to sign OR its a bit of BS. Is a quality striker going to be sitting ready to move to tannadice IF shankland goes? Doubtful. He would either have other offers or not be very good.
At this point, I'd say that the club hoping that benji and shanks sign new contracts is pie in the sky

It's more of the same bullshit. Blaming Brexit is nonsense. It will have an impact on recruitment, but the rules have been in place since January - what is the reference to September all about? It also only impacts people from the EU and not all 'overseas' recruitment. Maybe he is on about the tighter immigration rules that Boris has brought in and linked that to Brexit.
They don't know what they are doing....

What is patently clear is that there is no money. The owners budget has been spent and the club have to sell first before they can recruit. Everyone has to get on board with the new model and be "on message"
If they can finish top 6, I will be the first to say I was wrong and apologise. If we get relegated, I don't even want to contemplate the consequences. Part of me feels that we should be raising a "sinking fund" to buy the club from the Administrators.

On its own it sounds reasonably positive however we’ve been getting fed stuff like this for the last couple of years and nothing ever really happens, so until we see some actual quality signings it looks like more bull shit.

Could well be a case of If Shankland goes, McNulty comes back on loan to play as the out and out striker.

Not a bad shout Lilley and you could be right...you'd hope there would be more in for him though - maybe last season put everybody else off the scent and he will bang in 30 for us 🤣 still need to give whoever is there quality supply.

Ogren has put in 350k a month since the pandemic. What? So he has put in around 5M pounds over the past 16 months?
What happened to the -
19/20 Scottish Championship prize winning money
20/21 Utd Season Ticket sales
Robbie Neilson (and backroom staff) compo money
20/21 Home/away kit revenue
20/21 Utd merchandise revenue
20/21 Utd PPV sales (home and away supporters)
21/22 Utd Season Ticket Sales
21/22 Home/Away Kit revenue
21/22 Utd Merchandise revenue
£2.1M grant from the Scottish Government
?
The numbers don't quite add up. That's a substantial amount of money into the club, despite the obvious problems the pandemic brought (to every club).
Has Ogren been paid a lot of that money back, off of the above? Wtf is going on?
We seem to be continually seen as a club living 'hand to mouth', despite our supporters putting their hands in their pockets constantly to buy season tickets, strips, merchandise, DUTV, Hospo etc etc. We, as a support, spend a collective fortune. And more, than most of us can individually justify.
Yet, clubs just 30 minutes away like StJ or 80 minutes away like Motherwell, have no such qualms, and despite the pandemic are able to have success, sign players, upgrade their stadium, etc etc.
Meanwhile we have signed ONE outfield player in two transfer windows.
Who's fault is this?

Just further evidence that Mr Asghar is pulling the wool over Mr Ogren's eyes. Those losses are just unsustainable if Mr O decides enough is enough. That happens and we are insolvent, if we aren't already.

Fucking brilliant post. Would also add in:
Furlough payments
Wage cuts
If it's costing that much to keep the lights on, I'd be changing electricity suppliers. Something doesn't add up imho.
I had an argument with some pap on Twitter who was trying to blame all our problems on the Utd support's negativity. The boy was an Actuary and Investment Consultant and by the looks of his Twitter had never posted about Utd (or football in fact) before. Where did he get that idea then?
Offline
The fact that wages hit 130% of turnover.
is probably at the heart of this. That is pre pandemic turnover. Even with the deffered wages without the owners financial input we would have been In trouble.

Are all of the staff required to achieve gold status and Project Brave? Every time a photo is posted of a visit seems to be a coach for every player on the visit.
If a player has multiple coaches advising him to focus on different areas which does he listen to and focus on - thats my concern with the volume of coaches

Tell you who's fault it isn't = the Utd supportFucking brilliant post.
Never even mentioned the two 6 figure donations from DUSF.

Ogren has put in 350k a month since the pandemic. What? So he has put in around 5M pounds over the past 16 months?
What happened to the -
19/20 Scottish Championship prize winning money
20/21 Utd Season Ticket sales
Robbie Neilson (and backroom staff) compo money
20/21 Home/away kit revenue
20/21 Utd merchandise revenue
20/21 Utd PPV sales (home and away supporters)
21/22 Utd Season Ticket Sales
21/22 Home/Away Kit revenue
21/22 Utd Merchandise revenue
£2.1M grant from the Scottish Government
?
The numbers don't quite add up. That's a substantial amount of money into the club, despite the obvious problems the pandemic brought (to every club).

They also got a bit of the insurance payout.
I long for the days when football fans were supporters & not accountants.
Makes me wonder too, would Jim McLean have survived the keyboard??

In recent years the biggest club in Scottish football went into liquidation.
Do you honestly expect Utd fans to choose to just blithely turn a blind eye to being in debt to one individual to the tune of 10M by next accounts?

Fair point, but what is people's end game?
Seems like too many people on here are keen to point out to MO that he has made a terrible mistake in trusting TA and that he will never make any money. What are they hoping for by doing that?
I'm not having a go, I just genuinely don't see what the point is. Especially since mostly it is based on a dislike of TA's personality and stating of speculation as if it was fact

It's true that in a vacuum of information things will end up being made up or as you say speculation being treated as fact. However, it is not as if there isn't actual evidence that the club is being run poorly or at least is being taken in a direction that is questionable.
I think the hope is that Mr Ogren sees through his new clothes, like everyone else, and seeks out a new tailor.

That's pretty much where I am as well. A lot of this seems to based on a dislike of TA.
Would it be controversial to say that he wasted a hell of a lot less money than fans favourite Mr E Thompson

Head in sand again. It's not a dislike of TA - I don't really care what he does, as long as he's not doing it to my football club. I don't think anyone can blame ET for not having the club at heart even if he was, in the end chucking his own money away. TA is chucking someone else's money away with that someone else thinking he's investing it for a future return - that will end well.

Speaking for me (and only me) i have no 'end game'.
But i love the club (like all of us on here) and am deeply worried about the debt we are accruing to Ogren and how that is paid back.
I won't speculate any further as to how he may want to garner a big chunk of that money back, should their 'conveyor belt' plan not come to fruition as they think it will.
But i certainly have an idea, how they will.
His name is Bond, Derek Bond, Finance Director, Dundee United Football Company.
Why not send him some bits of advice?
