Last season our defence / goal keeper were what kept us in the league and I'm sure they will play a big part again this season and it will be interesting to see what way TC will go as this season we have more options. After watching the first 3 games ( I know it's still really pre season ) I'm not sure what way he will set us up but Mulgrew can't be left hand centre back if we play 3 or Nilsen right back if we go with a back four but for the first time in a long time we atleast have options.

The combination we decide to go with worries me a little bit as on paper, i don't think there's too many obvious partnerships that doesn't leave us exposed in some way or another. From what i've seen briefly Mulgrew makes Reynolds look about 21 in terms of agility and pace and if were going to ask the wing-backs to add more in an attacking sense, we really need the wider CH's to be mobile. Edwards is best in the middle and i don't think there's an obvious choice on the right.
The other aspect is how do we protect these guys, last year they got a lot of protection from a defensive set-up and defensive minded players in front of them for the most part - which i think was needed. Again if we're trying to transition as a team, this may leave them more exposed.
"more of the same" in terms of types of performances won't be tolerated for long by the fans but either will trying to play more expansive and getting walloped each week. I don't think we've got the players to change set-up and approach drastically though. Quandary for even the most experienced manager really.

Seems likely he is going for the back 3. Edwards should be the central player but obviously any of the 'experienced' centre backs we have can play central. For the left, I don't believe that it can only be Mulgrew or Reynolds. Kerr Smith or Neilson could easily play there with their ability on the ball. Even Connolly or Butcher to be honest. The only player I wouldn't be comfortable with out on the left would be Edwards. He has to be central.
For me I'd be going with one of Neilson or Smith on the right of the 3. Edwards central and then Mulgrew on the left. Gives us a bit of everything.
