100 years ago today

This is a tenous 'fitba' thread, granted.

BUT

100 years ago today one of the most poignant moments in history took place. And it involved a football match.

On the wastelands of North East France/Belgium 100 years ago today some men who were MADE to distrust, fear and HATE one another by their respective governments, media and press done something extroardinary.

In the midst of one of the most brutal, inhumane and bloody battles of all time they on Christmas Day called a 'truce',put down their guns and ventured over 'No Man's Land' to greet their 'enemy'.Having little or nothing in common considering they barely spoke a word of the same language, they clung onto the few main common unspoken interests/nesessecities they shared....one being, football.

And so a 'match' took place on the wastelands of 'No Man's Land',on a piece of unhabitable wasteland in Northern Europe in the midst of Winter. No score was ever recorded.it didn't matter, nor ever will.

RIP to every man who played in this match.NONE of them clearly was a man full of hate who wanted to kill.

Governments, politics and propoganda are terrible, destructive forces when controlled by the wrong hands.

Re: 100 years ago today

Did the ball no get stuck on the German centre half's helmet when he attempted the first clearance of the game or did my Grandad just make that up

Hear their shout, hear their roar
They've probably had a barrel of ale and much, much more
Hooray, hooray, hooray, yeah
Over the hill went the swords of a thousand men

So true, and one of the best examples.
