"Assists"

Started this thread so as not to derail Utd v St J thread:

As a curmudgeonly auld fart I would just like to say I hate, loathe and detest this lazy Americanism "assist".
I can see it's a handy catch all but it shouldnae detract from the skills of our beautiful game.
Stick to pass, cross, chip, through ball, square ba', flick on, etc etc.

I'll give you a classis example, Youtube it: Willie Carr, Ernie Hunt Coventry v Everton 1970.
Indirect free kick mebbe 25 - 30 yds out. edit 20
Willie Carr stands over ball, gets it between his heels flicks it up about 6 feet drops with just that wee bit backspin to let Ernie Hunt lash it with the outside of hees right foot over wall, keeper nowhere into top right corner.
Never seen anything like it, never will.
Total stunner, so good it got banned.

Point is you couldnae in a million years call it an ''assist'.

Grizzle over !

Re: "Assists"

Some assists are better than the goal though, Shakey.

Here here!

I used to watch Ice Hockey on Transworld Sport in the early 90s and used to laugh at them talking about assists and playing music when a goal was scored - then the music thing crept into our game in the probably mid-90s and I just found it so cringe-worthy - now it is the norm at every stadium.

The game is so analysed and to the nth-degree now - the latest lot of bullshit is this expected goals stat ffs.  Along with these fecking heat maps etc, seriously who gives a fuck?!

Re: "Assists"

I agree the way the game is over-analysed annoys me at times. There is no better analysis that what we all see with our own eyes. I guess its the way the game has changed.

As for assists, I must admit, I love assist stats and I wish there was MORE focus on them if I'm honest.

Obviously you get assists like Louis' the other night for Shankland, but at the end of the day, if Louis plays that straight to Shankland's feet, we dont score. He lays it off perfectly for him, Shankland doesnt have to break stride. Definitely worthy of being called an assist for me.

It's not where you're from it's where you're at.

Re: "Assists"

I'm all for 'proper' assists. Like Stuart Beedie's above.

Always loved this slide rule pass from Gomis. Cool as fuck under pressure, pinpoint accuracy and another 'proper' assist to win the game in a end to end match.

As a keen Ice Hockey fan, been to watch games at the top level all over the UK, and Europe and was planning to visit the US for NHL games before Corona, have to say this is a bit disingenuous. Ignoring the music (it's an arena sport with potential stoppages in play every minute), the category of assists in Hockey is very useful when trying to discover who the most creative players are. If your a player receiving more secondary assists the chances are he's the playmaker who's opening up the opposition, in the same way as many centremids in football usually cut open the defence with a pass, but don't actually play the final ball that leads to the goal.

I think assists in football are worthwhile for clubs like ourselves, it's a good way to market our players to bigger leagues. 'Oh he got 10 assists last season we want more cash'. Folk that watch the games know who the real creative forces are in their team, even if someone else gets credited with the final assist, fortunately with so many lazy scouts in football such a category only works to our benefit, assuming our scouts don't fall in the same trap.

Re: "Assists"

The whole assist thing is modern day nonsense.  I think it was Shankly( Bill  not the kiddy on Fun version) who said if your not Interfering with play what the f##k are you on the pitch for.
Can't remember the game (age thing) an inside right crossed to a striker who had made a great near post run pulling two men with him . The striker then dummies the ball leaving a tap in for the left winger.
No assist is awarded to the striker? As I said it's all nonsense.

Not having a go at Ice Hockey - I guess these things have always been part of that sport - just trying to make the point that those things were never part of football until the last 10/20 years or so.   Another Americanism that has crept into our culture here IMO.
