Now i hate to defend the above , i really do, because Utd have bored me to near death this season.
BUT
We are currently in the Top 6 (should be ahead of Motherwell too) and thinking of our results against the other Top 5 so far and, well......
Rangers - (A) Defeat (H) Beat us by 1 goal
Celtic - (H) Beat us by 1 goal
Hibs - (H) Beat us by 1 goal (A) Draw
Aberdeen - (H) Draw
Motherwell - (A) Win
That is not too bad and we have amassed more points and got closer to the above the longer the season has went on despite Covid hitting the squad and subsequent issues.
I've thought all season that if we just get in a couple of players in key areas (namely attacking centre mid and left wing) then we can have a shout at 5th.
That is on Tony Asghar. That is his role, his key remit.
Every avenue should be getting investigated to see if we can provide the players in these key positions that would (IMO) transform this team from 'hard to beat' to 'entertaining'.

Agree with all that, Tek.
As much as I want to be entertained, I also want my team to establish themselves in this division.
When we took the shackles of yesterday we did look threatening. I'd love to see us go 442 in our upcoming home games. We have the players to make it work.

I am going to go against what seems to be the common wisdom on here, but I think our midfielders are already good enough, and a marquee signing of a creative midfielder wouldn't help (well at least one of the quality we could realistically attract.
I also am starting to feel like switching to 442 might be an absolute disaster.
And I blame it all on the central defenders. I think they are an absolute liability and that the whole team setup is to protect us from their vulnerabilities. We have to sit deep as if a team gets in behind us they will score at will. The midfield needs to sit stupidly deep as well as if they leave any space between them teams will use that space to carve us up. Which is why the attackers might as well not bother playing, as they are so isolated they can't get into the game.
A 442 where we sit just as deep and show so little ambition to build an attack wouldn't solve our attacking problems, but would leave us with one less central defender. And if we pushed forwards in a 442 we would concede 3 goals a match.
OK, so Hibs are better than most teams in this league, but after all the changes yesterday we still created barely anything, our build up play was still shit, and Hibs will be wondering how they managed to finish with only one goal.
Yes Benji kept us in it, but we were very lucky they missed so many where he shouldn't really have had a chance.
I'm not sure we need a whole new defense, I think a single quality player who can lead an organise, and has a bit of pace could really change this side. Might be easier to sign than a quality creative midfielder too.

Hibs opened us up loads of times yesterday, bad finishing cost them all the points. However 5 at the back does keep us in the game longer, we are better going forward with 442 but are wide open in that formation. A smash and grab point but our overall tally is something most of us must be delighted with IMO.

Hibs opened us up loads of times when we were playing a back 5 and we offered nothing going forward. Square pegs in round holes all over the park. At least when we went 4-4-2 we looked like causing them problems.

I am not happy with the football on display however the glass half empty in me will point out that we are only 4 above 11th spot.
Totally agree that a couple of signings should be enough and I mentioned the positions you have above in another post but you don’t have to be a footballing expert to see where our weaknesses are.
There is a £1 million loan available from the Scottish Government which the club will take no doubt.
The remit of Ashgar is recruitment and I would argue that so far it’s not been very successful of late and in particular in the summer where we had a limited budget and the players needed to hit the ground running.
Too many of the signing are similar to what we already had although you could argue that they have improved the starting 11,but the difference that Edwards, Fuchs, Bolton and McNulty have made is marginal in my opinion.
Edwards- is he an improvement on Watson? I’m not so sure, Fuchs-looks like an improvement but we needed a guy match fit for the Scottish game, Bolton- done ok but nothing to special and the signing of McNulty is totally bizarre considering he is much of a much although he is a decent player I’m just not sure where he fits in, a target man should have been signed.
I suppose in a long winded way I am saying that I will cut Mellon some slack with regards to what he has to play with but If I were taking out a £1 million loan and handing some of it to the recruitment department I would be scrutinising where he is spending it a bit more.

In Micky's defence:
Goals against 23, 5th best in league, although tbf 2 goals between us and Saints in 10th.
tbf we shipped 8 v Killie & Huns.
tbf Benji has saved us shipping them against Celtic, Hibs.
But it is what it is.
After next two games we'll have a better idea.
but what worries me more is the fact that we can't attack - scored 14. Woeful.
Only Ross County and St. Mirren worse.
Which brings us back to the McNulty signing - I'll say it again, ho hum, not what we needed at the time and the signing smacked of final hour on the final day.
We'll see what January brings but it has to be early January no the end of.
We're crying out for a target man for Lawrence to run off. Or Lawrence will be off.
Which is on Ashgar.

What we need is a CH with pace. All 3 CHs lack speed which causes them to sit deep which in turn pulls the midfield back. Then there is about 40yds between the midfield and forwards.
Can Neilson or Kerr run? might be worth a try if we persist with 5 at the back.
I don't enjoy watching us but I take heart from the fact that MM has the nous to change tactics from early in the season. The gameplan is clearly based on not conceding but he's quick to change that when we lose the first goal. Just off the top of my head, we've scored after conceding 3 times in recent games, winning one, losing one and drawing one.
