Not a phrase we've used during his time at United until now. 2 goals so far this season from maybe 9 or 10 starts I think? Certainly not what we are used to. I think everyone agrees that the way we are playing at the moment isn't really the type of football that suits him.
Last season, 17 of Shankland's goals came from balls into the box from wide positions.
SEVENTEEN
If Micky doesn't find a way to balance defensive steadiness with some decent attacking play then we are not going to get the best out of the guy.
Now I don't want to see Shankland leave. But in normal circumstances (non-Covid world) we could have demanded £3m minimum for him last summer. The way we are playing and his lack of goals means that, if anyone comes in this January or next summer with anything near even £2m, the club may have to really consider it due to the losses the club is facing due to the pandemic. This is a sad state of affairs considering how his trajectory was looking at the end of last season.
Fwiw, I would happily see Shankland see out his 3 years at Tannadice and leave for a free, but I'm sure the club had other ideas.
But back on topic, how do we change the setup or improve the current one to get the best out of him? Is it 442? 4231? 433? because its certainly not the 352/343 that we are currently going with. Do we sacrifice players like Clark and McNulty from the starting 11 to get wide players in the team that can provide the crosses he needs to really shine?
Any formation that gets us to their byeline will do for me.
So it's wingers we need, do we have any?
Or wingbacks, do we have any of them?
If they have turbo power they can get to the byeline.
Splitting a defence from narrow is a rare commodity.
But did anyone see MK Dons' goal last night?
A boy called Scott Fraser put their CF clean thro from narrow. Like a hot knife thro butter.
So we defo don't have any defence splitters (number 10's?) to play in LoA.
So get any chunt to the byeline, cut back, LoA scores.
HIT THE BYELINE!!
No matter who you are or what your position is or what formation the team is playing.
HIT THE BYELINE!!

He's a big part of things but the main issue is the team i.e. keeping the ball more, having more possession, doing something proactive with it and creating more chances. I couldn't care if Shankland only scores 2 all season, as long as the team are regularly scoring and looking like scoring, which they don't now. Obviously the club benefits twice if he does because we score goals and he retains his value.
Mellon spoke about 'picking up points' again at the week but this seems to be mjore about not losing games rather than going to win them. We start with 0 conceded, he reckons the best way to win points with this team is to keep it that way.
I'd like to see 2 things. One is going 4-4-2 amore often as I think we can play this well aginst bottom 6 teams. The other is to play the 3-4-3 but drop 2 of the strikers (Clark, McNulty or Shankland) and play attackers (Sporle, Chalmers or Bolton) instead who'll link with Robson and Smith out wide. Really more of a 5-4-1 but if the wide players have licence to go and press it becomes more attacking.
We're hoping having more strikers on the pitch pays dividends but we've got all the guns and no ammo.
All of this is underpinned by keeing the fcuking ball! We're terrible at it. truly awful

Shanks right now is like a sniper with no ammo, pretty much useless.
Until this gets remedied the guys lucky to have a single look at goal a game.

Exactly Billy H.
Get the ba in the phuckin box.
Preferably from the byeline.
Canna be offside.
Hit the phuckin byeline.

Get him the ball facing the net instead of hoofing the ball up to him to hold the ball up a la Jon Daly with his back to goal. Absolutely wasting him playing the way we are now.

Exactly BH , it’s not rocket science and don’t think we need any UEFA coaching badges to agree with that

But if it was as easy as that... we'd be doing it.
My point was more around what system and personell do we think we should be going for?
Online!
Stop playing 5 at back, Stop the complete focus on defending constantly, play with a bit of freedom and composer, take risks, play 2 wingers, play Clark upfront with shankland, get balls in box at every opportunity
This style of football wouldn’t be tolerated at tannadice with fans in stadium imo, it needs to change

For us to solve this drought of goals from him and the drought of chances created then it will require new blood.
4-4-2 and even 4-5-1 will see us creating much more going forward but wide men are required and again someone in the middle as we all know.
I said in another thread a week back that for the life in me I can’t understand the McNulty signing(I think he’s a decent player) as the two of them are pretty similar and a blind man could see we needed different option up with him a target man(linked with one in the papers today) and some width. That is where is limited resources should have been invested.
January will be crucial for our survival or top 6 spot in terms of recruitment which I think is vital and I appreciate it won’t be easy but the like of King, McMullan and Powers (possibly a few more) need to be moved on and replaced with a better player.

Short answer: we can play any formation we like.
Stop giving the ball away. Without the ball he won't score.
We know this - as Gaz says not rocket science.
.... Slightly longer answer - use players we have - which I think we've got reasonable talent in Robson and Bolton as he was at start of season + Logan Chalmers back, or new players in 2 or 3 weeks time.
The latter being the less likely given Covid etc etc ...
But if the latter does happen our history shows it'll be a loan deal that goes through on Jan 31st - so there goes another month.
All of which is academic - stop blootering the ball up the park. Fitba 101.
- - - - - - -
Was just watching Shanks/Dillo interview on DUTV.
He's abolutely single minded about what he wants in football - goals.
Absolutely single minded about what he hates - losing.
- What does thet tell you about the likelihood of us keeping him here beyond January ?

A goal and assist for the main man tonight. Hopefully more of the same to come. Mellon said on the radio "McNulty plays better through the middle and Shankland plays better with someone beside him." So he knows its clear as day just like the rest of us. Lets kick on from here. I felt sorry for Clark being left out and even Edwards to a certain extent. But we'll need the whole squad throughout the 2nd half of the season and everyone will play their part.

Agree entirely. The more experienced on the bench will al play a part. The less experienced will get their shot when we have amassed enough points to stay up.

The answer to the thread title is simple, give him the ball in the box.
