Coaching staff have Covid

Unfortunately it would seem Utd have finally had their first Covid outbreak and it would seem it is possibly Mickey Mellon, Stevie Frail and one other member of the coaching staff.

Wishing them all a speedy recovery.

Possibly all missing the Livi and Rangers games now.

Davie Bowman and Brian Grant in charge?

Re: Coaching staff have Covid

Rumour is it's Frail, Bowman and Alexander that have Covid, but Mellon and the rest of the 1st team staff have to self isolate now (including our two physios).

U18 staff have stepped up to take 1st team affairs.

Is that Adam Asghar and Brian Grant?

Would think that for the games, Mellon and the rest of the self-isolating staff would be able to watch the stream and be in constant contact with whoever is in the dugout. Not ideal for training and preparation though!

Bad timing indeed. Very important that our experienced players now step up and take on more responsibility.

Re: Coaching staff have Covid

Certainly be interesting to see how this pans out. He can of course stream and offer opinion but it’s clear Mellon is very vocal on the touch line so what impact will his absence have.

If you were looking at cynically we could just record his voice saying “shape” and put it through a speaker every 30 seconds ....

Re: Coaching staff have Covid

Heard a rumour earlier that 5 players are now self isolating at home now too.

I hope it turns out to be untrue.

The players are tested what? Twice a week? So i'd be surprised. Unless all 5 have only today just started showing symptoms and it's precautionary until their next test.

Certainly hope this isnt true. If we have that amount of players self-isolating then surely the game wouldnt be far off being postponed? If that was the case, I'd hope we havent broken any of the protocols that Killie/St Mirren did.

The players are only tested once a week now... also if they are self-isolating now, they are self-isolating for the full 14 days...

They could test negative but still be identified by track and trace as a close contact and therefore have to isolate, no?

100%. Even if they test negative every day. Unless its reviewed and the contact isn't as close as initially feared... which is unlikely.

Re: Coaching staff have Covid

I imagine if professional players are sticking to the rules then they will be having a pretty encapsulated time. Even at home they must be avoiding their kids coming in from school or whatever?

And on a broader issue there must have been about 7 million Euro games this past week. That must be fairly hard to manage?

Re: Coaching staff have Covid

The rumours about the players missing also tie in to rumours of maybe not being so encapsulated

NINE PLAYERS ARE SELF-ISOLATING

This is not good.

Article advises the players isolating are playing who had close contact with the Medical staff.

So you'd assume maybe Chalmers and Glass as long termers are 2 of the 9 (really hope so), and anyone who's been carrying a knock.

Re: Coaching staff have Covid

"Grateful for cooperation and guidance" sounds a little bit like a backhanded apology and a thank you that the game isn't cancelled.

Realistically, any players could have had a massage/slight treatment. Best we can hope for is an even spread of positions and no obvious gaps in the team i.e. no full backs (I would say centre halves as a better example but I open it up to "that's a good thing" comments).

Re: Coaching staff have Covid

Well it's the ultimate prize required for anyone who can predict the starting 11 tomorrow.

Edwards interview on DUTV this morning so you'd assume he is ok. Literally guess work for the rest of them.

Re: Coaching staff have Covid

Going to stay positive here

Hope that those who fill in can step up. Assuming a number of starters are out this is an ideal time to stake a claim for your place in the side. Makes tomorrow a very difficult process with wholesale changes but to quote a phrase usually used in American sports 'Next man up'.  You train the same, you work as hard, now go show you deserve to keep your place.

Re: Coaching staff have Covid

Even worst case scenario and all 9 are usual starters (they wont be) we should still be able to put out a team that competes. At the end of the day, we are playing Livingston so any Dundee United first team should be able to give them a game.

Chalmers, Pawlett and Glass are 3 players that we know for a fact are injured so I'd assume they are 3 of the 9.

I think as long as 2/3 of Shanks, Clark and McNulty are available, then we have the firepower to sneak something from the game. Then 2/3 of Edwards, Connolly, Reynolds available will give us our settled back 3.

But hey it's all guess work. I definitely think we have a big and strong enough squad to deal with this.

Re: Coaching staff have Covid

This is why i thought it a tad risky sending so many out on loan this season. We were always gonna face this scenario at some point and may do so again.

Re: Coaching staff have Covid

Pinch of salt... but just off the phone with a mate who gave me some 2nd or maybe even 3rd hand info on who the 9 are:

Benji
Reynolds
Butcher
Bolton
Robson
Clark
Chalmers
King
McMullan

Hoping they are wide of the mark. They wouldnt tell me where they got this from but said it was solid. I'd say 4 of those were certain starters tomorrow. I was hoping for much less impact to that starting 11 than that.

Re: Coaching staff have Covid

Clark is one of the players isolating apparently.
