Could it be simply the fact that he is too outspoken to fit into our management structure? What I mean is, like politics, each person has to be on message.

 
If you take away the fact Jim McInally is an ex United man, is there anything actually in his CV to suggest he merits a Premier league job? He's not done that well with Peterhead. Some good seasons, some very poor seasons.

Well his Peterhead side played Mickey Mellon's Utd side off the park at Tannadice on Saturday.

Regardless of whether you think he 'merits' the job or not.

There's a whole heap of teams that he should have been interesting first and then been successful with before being considered for the united job. If he'd went to a Dunfermline/Falkirk/ICT and exceeded their expectations, that would have given a better indication he was ready.
